How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 9 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A daily close below $13.70, the 8 September 2026 close before the third-quarter report, which would erase the whole post-report recovery; or fourth-quarter sales growth below 22.0% with gross margin falling back toward 31.7%.
Open pick Medium conviction, opened at $16.73. Since then −5.6% against the S&P 500's −0.1% (−5.5 pp). Kill line at open: $13.70 (daily close); graded by at the latest.
How picks are graded →The thesis
Optical Cable Corporation's data-center and enterprise orders are lifting its sales and gross margin together, but the order book stopped growing in the third quarter. The fiscal fourth-quarter report, expected around mid-December 2026, will show whether sales growth near 22% holds while optical fiber stays scarce.
The company's 9 September 2026 release showed third-quarter sales up 22.0% to $24.3 million. Gross margin rose to 37.4%, from 31.7% a year earlier. Net income was $1.9 million, or $0.21 per share, against $302,000, or $0.04, a year earlier. The weak point is the backlog. According to the third-quarter 10-Q, it rose only $0.2 million in the quarter, to $13.5 million on 31 July 2026 from $13.3 million on 30 April 2026.
The narrative is maturing: the company has made no announcement since the 9 September 2026 release and the third-quarter 10-Q, and the shares slipped from $16.99 on 5 October 2026 to $15.71 on 8 October 2026 without company news. The shares now move on reported numbers and thin trading, with little new attention behind them.
Bullish and bearish views on Optical Cable Corporation
The bull case on Optical Cable Corporation (OCC), in brief: Sales and margins are rising together. The bear case: Backlog growth has nearly stopped.
Bull case
- Sales and margins are rising together. Third-quarter net sales rose 22.0% to $24.3 million and gross profit rose 43.9% to $9.1 million (company release, 9 September 2026). Over nine months, gross profit rose 35.5% to $22.1 million on sales up 18.3% to $62.9 million.
- The business has turned profitable. Nine-month net income was $2.5 million, against a $1.5 million loss a year earlier (company release, 9 September 2026). Third-quarter earnings per share of $0.21 beat the $0.20 consensus estimate (Benzinga, 9 September 2026).
- Growth reaches beyond the United States. International sales rose 28.8% in the third quarter, faster than total sales (company release, 9 September 2026).
- The order book is well above last year. Backlog and forward load was $13.5 million on 31 July 2026, against $7.3 million on 31 October 2025 (10-Q). On the 9 September 2026 call, management said these orders cannot be cancelled and mostly ship within two to three quarters.
- A fiber maker owns part of the company. Lightera paid $2.0 million on 7 July 2025 for a 7.24% stake, alongside a product collaboration aimed at data-center and enterprise customers (company 8-K).
Bear case
- Backlog growth has nearly stopped. Backlog rose from $10.4 million on 31 January 2026 to $13.3 million on 30 April 2026, then only to $13.5 million on 31 July 2026 (10-Q). With the order book flat, there is less to drive fourth-quarter growth.
- Fiber shortages limit shipments. On the 9 September 2026 call, management named optical fiber shortages as the main obstacle to a faster production ramp and cited longer raw-material lead times.
- Sales missed the consensus estimate. Third-quarter sales of $24.297 million came in under the $24.5 million consensus (Benzinga, 9 September 2026).
- Overhead is growing as fast as sales. Third-quarter selling, general and administrative expenses rose 22.5% to $7.0 million (company release, 9 September 2026), against 22.0% sales growth.
- The company gives no guidance. Management does not publish forward guidance (9 September 2026 call), so the fourth quarter stays unknown until it is reported.
Price setup
On adjusted daily closes, the shares closed at $15.71 on 8 October 2026, down from $16.73 on 6 October 2026 and $16.99 on 5 October 2026. That close is 41.6% below the 52-week high of $26.92. The shares are up 5.6% over three months.
The 14-day relative strength index (RSI), a momentum gauge running from 0 to 100, stood at 56.1 on 8 October 2026. That reading is neutral, neither stretched nor washed out. The nearest reference level is the $13.70 close on 8 September 2026, the day before the third-quarter report. A close below it would erase the whole post-report recovery.
Crowding signs are limited. The company has made no announcement or filing since the third-quarter 10-Q. Earnings are about two months away. The company has about 8.83 million shares outstanding, so small trades can move the price, as the drop in early October without news shows.
Catalysts, next 30 days
- 31 October 2026: fiscal year 2026 ends. This closes the fourth quarter, the first that has to turn the $13.5 million backlog of 31 July 2026 into sales while fiber stays scarce. No results are released on this date.
- ~15 December 2026, est.: fourth-quarter and full-year fiscal 2026 report. This falls outside the 30-day window, but the case depends on it. It shows whether sales growth near 22% and gross margin near 37% held, and whether backlog grew again after a flat third quarter.
No company event is scheduled in the next 30 days. Price moves until the December report depend on trading flows, not new disclosures.
What would change the view
The case breaks if the December report shows that the order build has peaked. That would mean backlog below the $13.5 million of 31 July 2026, fourth-quarter sales growth well under the third quarter's 22.0%, and management again blaming fiber supply. A gross margin slipping back toward the 31.7% of a year earlier would show that the volume-driven margin gain was temporary.
On price, a daily close below $13.70, the 8 September 2026 close before the third-quarter report, would erase the post-report recovery. That would signal that the market has stopped giving credit for the third-quarter results.
The case strengthens if fourth-quarter backlog grows again from $13.5 million and gross margin holds near 37%. Either result would show that data-center demand is still adding orders, beyond merely filling earlier ones.
What it trades with
The business depends on the optical-fiber supply chain. The same fiber shortage that management cited on 9 September 2026 limits other cable makers, and Lightera, a fiber producer, holds 7.24% of the shares. As a microcap with no recent company news, the shares have moved mostly on the company's own reports and thin trading. The slide from $16.99 to $15.71 between 5 October 2026 and 8 October 2026 came with no company-specific headline. Any link to larger networking and optical names such as Viavi, Credo or Lumentum is loose and has not been measured.
Notes
- Optical Cable's fiscal year ends 31 October; fourth-quarter and full-year results usually come out in December.
- The company does not issue formal forward guidance, so investors see results only when each quarter is reported.
- Lightera, a fiber maker, has held about 7.24% of the shares since a $2.0 million purchase on 7 July 2025.
- The company is a microcap with about 8.83 million shares outstanding, so the share price can move sharply on low trading volume.
