How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 22 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A daily close below $25.00, which would erase the post-earnings recovery and fall below the $26.48 level reported on 6 October 2026; or a 2027 net yield outlook at or below 1.7% at the December report.
Open pick Medium conviction, opened at $27.08. Kill line at open: $25.00 (daily close); graded by at the latest.
How picks are graded →The thesis
Carnival's record 2027 bookings, new investment-grade balance sheet and $1.2 billion of 2026 share buybacks give the shares a reasonable chance to outperform from $27.30. Fuel prices and the fourth-quarter report expected around 18 December 2026 decide whether that holds.
The September quarter was strong. In its 29 September 2026 8-K, Carnival reported record revenue of $8.4 billion for the quarter ended 31 August 2026 and record net income of $1.92 billion. The company raised full-year 2026 adjusted net income to about $3.08 billion, more than $150 million above its June guidance, even after a $150 million fuel headwind.
The weak spot is pricing growth. Net yields, Carnival's measure of revenue per available berth day, rose 2.4% in constant currency in the third quarter. Fourth-quarter guidance calls for about 1.7%. The narrative is maturing: the recovery and deleveraging story is widely known, and analysts split on targets after the 29 September 2026 report. Some raised theirs and others cut them, and the shares still close 18.4% below their 52-week high.
Bullish and bearish views on Carnival Corporation Ltd.
The bull case on Carnival Corporation Ltd. (CCL), in brief: 2027 already half booked at record prices. The bear case: Yield growth is slowing.
Bull case
- 2027 already half booked at record prices. The 29 September 2026 release says full-year 2027 booked occupancy and pricing are at record levels, and 2028 opened at higher occupancy and prices than the prior year.
- Customer deposits at a quarterly record. Deposits reached $7.6 billion at 31 August 2026, a third-quarter record and $0.5 billion above the prior record, according to the 8-K.
- Balance sheet now investment grade. Total debt fell to about $23.9 billion at 31 August 2026 from about $26.6 billion at 30 November 2025. S&P's upgrade made it the second agency to rate Carnival investment grade, and the company has no secured debt left.
- Cash returned through buybacks and dividends. Repurchases total about $1.2 billion for 2026, nearly $800 million of it since the third quarter began.
- Most analysts rate the shares a buy. Morgan Stanley raised its target to $32.50 and Susquehanna raised its to $29 on 30 September 2026. Wells Fargo's target is $34 after a cut on 1 October 2026 (Benzinga).
Bear case
- Yield growth is slowing. Fourth-quarter net yield guidance of about 1.7% in constant currency is below the 2.4% delivered in the third quarter and the roughly 2.3% guided for full-year 2026 (8-K, 29 September 2026).
- Fuel is a direct earnings lever. Carnival guides fourth-quarter fuel at about $896 per metric ton. It says a 10% move changes adjusted net income by about $59 million. Fuel and currency cost $131 million in the third quarter.
- Profit growth stalled in the quarter. Third-quarter adjusted EPS of $1.43 and adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) of $2.99 billion were both flat year on year. Revenue rose about 3.5%.
- Some targets came down after the report. Argus cut its target to $30 and Wells Fargo cut its to $34 on 1 October 2026 (Benzinga), even while keeping positive ratings.
- Thin fourth quarter. Guidance for the quarter ending 30 November 2026 is about $0.20 of adjusted EPS, so small fuel or pricing misses move the result by a large percentage.
Price setup
The shares closed at $27.30 on 21 October 2026 in split- and dividend-adjusted daily prices. That is 18.4% below the 52-week high of $33.45 and 4.2% above the price three months earlier. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI) is 68.1, just under the 70 level often read as overbought.
Benzinga reported the shares at $26.48, up 3.6%, on 6 October 2026 as crude oil fell. It also noted that a "death cross" had been in place since March, meaning the 50-day moving average sat below the 200-day. The climb since then is a recovery inside a longer downtrend that has not reclaimed the high.
Crowding evidence is mixed. Benzinga flagged unusually large options trades ("whale alerts") in consumer discretionary names including Carnival on 30 September 2026, 10-02, 10-09, 10-13 and 10-19, a sign of active speculative interest. No SEC filings by the company appeared in the past 30 days, and the next earnings date is about eight weeks away.
Catalysts, next 30 days
- No scheduled company event falls inside the next 30 days. Crude oil prices are the main outside driver in this window, given the company's stated fuel sensitivity.
- ~18 December 2026, est.: fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 report. Investing.com lists this date. The report tests the 1.7% yield guide and the roughly $0.20 EPS guide, and it should bring the first numeric 2027 outlook.
- January 2027: wave season. The industry's peak booking period begins, and the company usually comments on it around the December report.
What would change the view
The case breaks if 2027 pricing weakens. Signs would be a 2027 net yield outlook at or below the 1.7% guided for the fourth quarter of 2026, or company commentary at the December report that booked pricing for 2027 is no longer at record levels.
A sustained rise in fuel prices would also break it. Each 10% change moves adjusted net income by about $59 million a quarter at current guidance. A cut to full-year guidance driven by fuel would undo the operational gains reported on 29 September 2026.
On price, a daily close below $25.00 would hand back the post-report recovery and fall below the $26.48 level Benzinga reported on 6 October 2026. That would show the rebound has failed.
What it trades with
Carnival trades with Royal Caribbean (RCL), and the two share the same drivers: cruise pricing, fuel and US consumer spending. The travel-and-leisure group, which also includes hotel owner Summit Hotel Properties (INN), has been gaining momentum since 10 August 2026 after a quieter July. A cooling of the group, or weak results from Royal Caribbean, would weigh on Carnival regardless of its own bookings.
The shares tend to move against oil. Benzinga attributed the 6 October 2026 rally to falling crude. Weak US jobs data, such as the September 2026 report Benzinga covered on 2 October 2026, is the main consumer-demand risk shared across the group.
Notes
- Carnival's fiscal year ends 30 November, so its fourth-quarter and full-year results are reported in December.
- Carnival guides on net yields and adjusted cruise costs in constant currency; current-dollar figures differ as exchange rates move.
- Earnings are sensitive to fuel: the company estimates a 10% fuel price change moves quarterly adjusted net income by about $59 million.
