Against its published line
Above its line on the last close.
How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 9 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A weekly close below $106.19, the 21 September 2026 price Benzinga reported when the FDA briefing documents were posted, which would erase the move since then. An FDA not-approvable letter or major-deficiency request would separately end the approval case.
Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

GRAIL's shares already price in U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of the Galleri multi-cancer blood test, and they kept falling as new trial data arrived. The case stays weak at this price. It is settled by an FDA approval for adults aged 50 and older that arrives before a weekly close below $106.19. The FDA has not published a decision date.
Adjusted daily closes show the shares at $132.61 on 8 October 2026, the final day of the Early Detection of Cancer Conference (EDCC) in Edinburgh. That is 13.9% below the $154.08 closing high of 5 October 2026 and below the $137.28 close of 6 October 2026. RTTNews reported pre-market trading at $158.89 on 6 October 2026, so the selling began the morning GRAIL's data presentations opened. RTTNews, 6 October 2026
The narrative is saturated: mainstream coverage peaked around Motley Fool's "Grail Stock Has Skyrocketed 171% in 6 Months" on 4 October 2026, and the shares have fallen on each of the EDCC days where adjusted closes are available. Simply Wall St called the stock 41% overvalued against its $97.40 fair value on 7 October 2026. The 23 September 2026 panel vote is widely known. What stays unknown is the FDA's decision and its timing. Simply Wall St, 7 October 2026
Bullish and bearish views on GRAIL, Inc.
The bull case on GRAIL, Inc. (GRAL), in brief: Advisers backed the benefit-risk balance. The bear case: Most valuations sit below the price.
Bull case
- Advisers backed the benefit-risk balance. On 23 September 2026 the FDA's Molecular and Clinical Genetics Devices Panel voted unanimously on safety and 6–4 on effectiveness. It voted 7–2, with one abstention, that benefits outweigh risks for adults aged 50 and older. STAT, 23 September 2026
- New data adds to the detection case. EDCC material says Galleri increased screen-detected cancers more than sevenfold in PATHFINDER 2 and about fourfold in NHS-Galleri versus standard screening alone, per RTTNews on 6 October 2026. GRAIL's 5 October 2026 release cites a more than 20% cut in Stage IV diagnoses after the first NHS-Galleri screening year. GRAIL, 5 October 2026
- Three Buy-rated targets sit above the price. UBS raised its target to $175 from $105 on 2 October 2026, Guggenheim to $155 from $75 on 1 October 2026, and Canaccord Genuity to $150 on 28 September 2026, per Benzinga. MarketBeat, 1 October 2026
- People pay for the test without a label. In the quarter to 30 June 2026, Galleri revenue rose 24% year over year to $42.6 million on more than 61,000 tests, up 35%. Q2 2026 release, 8-K, 5 August 2026
- Cash covers the review period. Cash, cash equivalents and short-term marketable securities totaled $861.6 million at 30 June 2026, per the same release.
Bear case
- Most valuations sit below the price. MarketBeat's consensus was Hold with an average target of $93.60 across 12 analysts (5 Buy, 6 Hold, 1 Sell) in its 1 October 2026 report. Mizuho kept Neutral with a $100 target on 25 September 2026, and RBC started at Sector Perform with $84 on 18 September 2026, per Benzinga.
- Detection rates remain modest. Galleri's overall episode sensitivity was 30.7% in NHS-Galleri and 39.3% in PATHFINDER 2, per Motley Fool on 30 September 2026. The panel's 6–4 effectiveness vote shows the split this leaves among advisers.
- Losses continue at scale. GRAIL reported a Q2 2026 net loss of $110.2 million on 5 August 2026, so cash use stays high until a label broadens payment.
- No decision date exists. The FDA has not announced when it will rule on the premarket approval application, which leaves the shares carrying an approval with no fixed resolution date.
Price setup
The shares closed at $132.61 on 8 October 2026, per adjusted daily closes. They are up 84.7% over three months and sit 13.9% below the $154.08 closing high of 5 October 2026. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI), a momentum gauge where readings above 70 are commonly read as stretched, stood at 73.6 on the same date.
The run sits far above its trend lines. MarketBeat listed the 50-day moving average at $82.36 and the 200-day at $67.69 on 1 October 2026, with a beta of 3.25, meaning the shares have moved about three times as much as the market. The nearest reference level below is $106.19, the price Benzinga reported on 21 September 2026, the day the FDA briefing documents were posted and the shares rose 31.47%.
Crowding is visible. Retail-facing coverage peaked in early October, executives sold on 21 September 2026, and two dated data events at ESMO fall inside the next three weeks.
Catalysts, next 30 days
- 25 October 2026 — ESMO Congress 2026 poster in Madrid on diagnostic workups after a positive Galleri test in clinical practice. The burden of follow-up procedures after false positives was a panel concern. GRAIL, 5 October 2026
- 26 October 2026 — ESMO rapid oral presentation from PATHFINDER 2 on cancer-site-guided diagnostic workups. It bears directly on the safety side of the benefit-risk case the FDA is weighing.
- ~12 November 2026, est. — Q3 2026 results; third-party earnings calendars list 12 November 2026, with one listing 18 November 2026, and GRAIL has not confirmed a date. Management can update the status of FDA discussions, Galleri test volume and cash use.
- Unscheduled — FDA premarket approval decision on Galleri. A broad label for adults aged 50 and older settles the case; a not-approvable letter ends it.
What would change the view
The case breaks on an FDA not-approvable letter, a major-deficiency request, or a label materially narrower than adults aged 50 and older. A share sale to fund losses, visible as an S-3 registration or 424B prospectus supplement, would also weaken it at this price. A weekly close below $106.19 would erase the entire move since the briefing documents were posted.
The read would improve if the FDA approved Galleri for adults aged 50 and older, or if GRAIL disclosed a firm decision date in 2026 on its Q3 call. ESMO data on 25 October 2026 and 10-26 showing a low rate of invasive procedures in people with positive tests who turned out cancer-free would also strengthen the benefit-risk case. Consensus targets moving up toward the $132.61 close would show analysts catching up with the price.
What it trades with
GRAIL trades on its own FDA timeline more than with its diagnostics peers. The medtech and diagnostics group, including Natera, Illumina, Myriad Genetics and Revvity, has been heating since late September, but GRAIL's 84.7% three-month gain came from the 21 September 2026 briefing documents and the 23 September 2026 panel vote. A cooling of the group would add pressure to a stock already trading above most analyst targets; a hotter group does not change the FDA outcome.
GRAIL was spun off from Illumina in 2024, so Illumina headlines can still be linked to it. With a beta of 3.25 per MarketBeat on 1 October 2026, broad market drops tend to hit the shares much harder than the S&P 500.
Notes
- The FDA advisory committee vote of 23 September 2026 does not bind the agency, and the FDA has not announced a date for its premarket approval decision on Galleri.
- GRAIL runs large operating losses (Q2 2026 net loss $110.2M), so a future share sale remains possible and would appear in SEC filings.
- GRAIL was spun off from Illumina in 2024, and Illumina-related headlines can still be linked to the name.
- Galleri is sold today as a laboratory-developed test; GRAIL states it has not been cleared or approved by the FDA.
