How to read this

The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 16 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.

Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.

Kill line

A daily close below $11.01, the 8 October 2026 close, which would erase the 9 October 2026 rally gain. A Novavax Q3 report with no Sanofi trial start and no dated timetable would also break the catalyst case.

Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

The thesis

Novavax's case still turns on one partner event: Sanofi starting its COVID-19–influenza combination-vaccine Phase 3 trial. Under terms Novavax disclosed on 6 August 2026, that start triggers a $125 million milestone. Sanofi's Q3 results on 30 October 2026 and Novavax's Q3 report, estimated for 5 November 2026, are the dated events most likely to confirm a start or a timetable.

The shares have moved further ahead of that confirmation. They closed at $12.82 on 15 October 2026, matching their 52-week high, and adjusted daily closes show a 62.7% rise over three months. The rating stays low because a stock at its high after that run needs the milestone confirmed on time, and the trial report still rests on press coverage.

The one new datapoint since the last note leans bearish. Citigroup kept its Sell rating on 15 October 2026 and raised its price target to $8, about 38% below the 15 October 2026 close. That matches Bank of America's $8 Underperform target from 9 October 2026.

The narrative is accelerating: the 10 October 2026 trial-approval report, two analyst target changes within a week and a close at a new 52-week high on 15 October 2026 all came in the same stretch. Much of October's gain still came from headlines with no link to Novavax's products.

Bullish and bearish views on Novavax, Inc.

The bull case on Novavax, Inc. (NVAX), in brief: Regulators have reportedly cleared the trial. The bear case: Neither company has confirmed a start.

Bull case

  • Regulators have reportedly cleared the trial. CoinCentral reported on 10 October 2026 that Belgian, German and Portuguese regulators approved Sanofi's combination Phase 3 trial, with recruitment expected in November. Novavax said on 6 August 2026 that a trial start in the United States or European Union triggers the $125 million payment (Q2 2026 release).
  • Sanofi has said it wants to move first. In Novavax's 6 August 2026 release, Sanofi confirmed it intends to be among the first movers in the combination-vaccine segment and was in advanced talks with regulators on trial timing.
  • Partner economics extend past one trial. The same release sets Nuvaxovid royalties in the high teens to low twenties percent of Sanofi's global net sales. It also describes a further $75 million manufacturing-transfer milestone.
  • Liquidity is not the near-term constraint. Novavax reported $724 million in cash, cash equivalents, marketable securities and restricted cash at 30 June 2026.
  • The consensus target sits above the price. TradingView reported a consensus 12-month target of $14.86 from seven analysts (four Buy, one Hold, two Sell) on 9 October 2026, with a range of $7 to $25.

Bear case

  • Neither company has confirmed a start. No Novavax release or 8-K reporting a Sanofi trial start had appeared through 15 October 2026. The approval report comes from one secondary outlet, and 24/7 Wall St. found no announcement, filing or analyst action behind the 9 October 2026 move.
  • Two Sell-side targets sit far below. Citigroup kept Sell with an $8 target on 15 October 2026, and Bank of America kept Underperform with an $8 target on 9 October 2026. Both raised targets while keeping negative ratings, so the higher price did not change their view of the business.
  • Unrelated headlines drove the biggest moves. Benzinga reported that a suspected plague case in Russia lifted the shares more than 20% on 5 October 2026, and they pulled back on 6 October 2026. A New York Times report on a National Institutes of Health (NIH) cancer-vaccine effort lifted them about 16% on 9 October 2026; Novavax has no cancer-vaccine program.
  • Underlying revenue is small. Novavax reported Q2 2026 revenue of $57 million against $239 million a year earlier; the 2025 quarter included $202 million from a licensing milestone and a Takeda amendment.

Price setup

The shares closed at $12.82 on 15 October 2026, a new 52-week high in adjusted daily closes. The three-month gain is 62.7%, and the 14-day relative strength index (RSI) reads 66.7, just below the 70 level often read as overbought. The 8 October 2026 close of $11.01 marks where the shares stood before the NIH-headline rally on 9 October 2026.

Crowding evidence is visible. Benzinga's 5 October 2026 coverage framed the plague-driven jump as a potential short squeeze, Benzinga listed Novavax among trending stocks that day, and Benzinga flagged large options trades in the name on 29 September 2026. Two earnings dates fall within three weeks. A close back under $11.01 would show the October gain reversing without company news.

Catalysts, next 30 days

  • 30 October 2026 — Sanofi Q3 2026 results and webcast (date confirmed in Sanofi's 6 October 2026 release). A timing comment on the combination trial would confirm or contradict the reported November recruitment start.
  • ~5 November 2026, est. Novavax Q3 2026 results. Novavax had not announced a date as of 16 October 2026; it announced its Q2 date on 30 July 2026, one week ahead of the 6 August 2026 report. This is the likely place to confirm a trial start, a dated timetable or the $125 million milestone.
  • ~2026-11, est. Reported start of patient recruitment in Sanofi's Phase 3 trial. A start in the EU or US triggers the milestone; a slip leaves it outstanding.

What would change the view

The case breaks if Sanofi's 30 October 2026 commentary pushes the trial start past November, or if Novavax's Q3 report has no trial start and no dated timetable. Either would leave the $125 million milestone unearned while the shares trade at a 52-week high. Q3 revenue and Sanofi Nuvaxovid sales commentary falling short of Novavax's 6 August 2026 adjusted revenue framework of $235 million to $275 million would weaken the royalty part of the case.

On price, a daily close below $11.01, the 8 October 2026 close, would erase the 9 October 2026 rally gain. A company-confirmed trial start before 5 November 2026, with the shares holding above that close, would strengthen the case.

What it trades with

Novavax trades with vaccine and messenger-RNA names on sector headlines. It rose with Moderna and BioNTech on the 9 October 2026 NIH report, and with Moderna and Vaxcyte on the 5 October 2026 plague report. The precision-biotech group, which includes Moderna, Halozyme, Iovance and Kodiak, was re-accelerating as of 15 October 2026 after a saturated reading in late September. That tailwind can reverse on a single headline, and the Sanofi milestone is the only part of the case that is specific to Novavax.

Notes

  • Novavax's 6 August 2026 adjusted revenue framework excludes Sanofi supply sales, royalties and milestones, so it is not guidance for total reported revenue.
  • Sanofi controls the timing of its Phase 3 combination-trial start, which Novavax said on 6 August 2026 would trigger a $125 million milestone.
  • Novavax has no cancer-vaccine program; moves tied to cancer-vaccine news reflect sector sentiment rather than company pipeline exposure.
