How to read this

The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 12 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.

Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.

Kill line

A daily close below $460, which would give back a large part of the rally after the 30 September 2026 investor day. A cut to the fiscal 2027 revenue guide of $11.1–11.2 billion at the December report would also end the case.

The thesis

Synopsys has a second growth engine in AI custom-chip design. Its fiscal 2027 outlook of $11.1–11.2 billion in revenue and $19.04–19.12 in adjusted earnings per share (EPS), issued at the 30 September 2026 investor day, sits well above the consensus of $10.73 billion and $17.32 that Benzinga reported. The fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 report, estimated for around 9 December 2026, is the first test of whether results keep pace with that guide.

The case rests on three new facts from the same day. Amazon signed a multi-year deal worth more than $1 billion to license Synopsys chip-design IP (intellectual property) and software for its Nitro, Graviton and Trainium processors. OpenAI agreed to build GPT-Synopsys, a chip-design model, with shared revenue. Synopsys also started a $1 billion accelerated share repurchase with JPMorgan Chase. The shares have already priced in much of this. They closed at $509.99 on 9 October 2026, with a 14-day relative strength index (RSI) of 86.4, so the next three months depend on delivery more than on new announcements.

The narrative is accelerating: the investor-day guide, the Amazon and OpenAI contracts and a run of target increases on 1 October 2026 all brought new attention within the past two weeks.

Bullish and bearish views on Synopsys, Inc.

The bull case on Synopsys, Inc. (SNPS), in brief: Guidance cleared consensus by a wide margin. The bear case: The shares are stretched after the jump.

Bull case

  • Guidance cleared consensus by a wide margin. On 30 September 2026 Synopsys guided fiscal 2027 revenue to $11.1–11.2 billion against a $10.73 billion estimate, and adjusted EPS to $19.04–19.12 against $17.32, according to Benzinga. The company described this as about 15% revenue growth.
  • Amazon contract adds royalty income. The Amazon deal, worth more than $1 billion and announced 30 September 2026, uses a license-plus-royalty model. Part of the revenue from the deal will rise with Amazon's chip production volumes.
  • Margin targets were set out to 2030. At the investor day the company set a target of about 50% non-GAAP operating margin by 2030, against 44.0% at the fiscal 2027 midpoint. It also targeted mid-20s percent annual growth in EPS and free cash flow from fiscal 2026 to 2030.
  • Cash is being returned to shareholders. Synopsys expects about $2.6 billion of free cash flow in fiscal 2026 (26 August 2026 release) and about $3.1 billion in fiscal 2027. It started a $1 billion accelerated repurchase in early October and aims to return up to 50% of free cash flow through buybacks.
  • Analysts raised targets after the event. On 1 October 2026 Rosenblatt raised its target to $620, KeyBanc to $605 and Wells Fargo to $540, with all three keeping positive ratings.

Bear case

  • The shares are stretched after the jump. The shares rose 10.8% on 1 October 2026 after the guide and are up 19.7% over three months to 9 October 2026. An RSI of 86.4 is far above the 70 level usually read as overbought, and Benzinga named Synopsys among overbought tech stocks on 7 October 2026.
  • The adjusted figures hide large costs. Fiscal 2027 GAAP EPS guidance is $8.16–8.61, well below the $19.04–19.12 adjusted range. Much of the gap comes from acquisition amortization and stock compensation following the Ansys deal.
  • Reported growth is flattered by the Ansys deal. Third-quarter fiscal 2026 revenue was $2.477 billion against $1.740 billion a year earlier (26 August 2026 release), but most of that jump comes from adding Ansys, which closed in July 2025.
  • Exposure to China and export rules. Nikkei Asia reported on 8 October 2026 that Synopsys wants to work with Chinese AI labs. In May 2025 the US Commerce Department required licenses for chip-design software sales to China, then lifted the rule in July 2025, so this sales channel depends on policy.
  • Higher bond yields weigh on high-multiple stocks. The 10-year Treasury yield was near 5.25% on 1 October 2026, a level that weighs on richly valued software stocks.

Price setup

On 9 October 2026 the shares closed at $509.99, 4.6% below their 52-week high of $534.56. The move came almost entirely in one gap, on 1 October 2026, when the shares rose 10.8% on a day the S&P 500 fell. Two of the three analyst targets raised that day sit above the 9 October 2026 close: Rosenblatt at $620 and KeyBanc at $605. Wells Fargo's target of $540 is only modestly higher.

The sell-side view is not unanimous. Earlier in the fall, Piper Sandler kept a Neutral rating with a $450 target and Morgan Stanley kept Equal Weight with $525. A daily close below $460 would mean the shares had given back a large part of the post-investor-day rally. The guide would then no longer be supporting the price.

Catalysts, next 30 days

  • 31 October 2026: fiscal 2026 ends. The fourth-quarter guide is $2.53–2.58 billion in revenue and $4.10–4.16 in adjusted EPS (26 August 2026 release).
  • ~30 October 2026, est.: Synopsys usually announces its fourth-quarter report date around this point. It did so on 30 October 2025 last year.
  • ~9 December 2026, est. (outside 30 days): fourth-quarter and full-year fiscal 2026 results. This is the first report since the fiscal 2027 guide and the event the three-month case turns on.

What would change the view

The case breaks if Synopsys cuts or narrows the fiscal 2027 revenue range of $11.1–11.2 billion at the December report. It also breaks if fourth-quarter revenue lands below the $2.53 billion low end of the guide. Either would show the investor-day outlook ran ahead of the business.

Two other events would weaken the case. One is a delay or reduced scope in the Amazon royalty deal. The other is a new US license requirement on chip-design software sales to China. On price, a daily close below $460 would show the market no longer supports the guide.

What it trades with

Synopsys trades with Cadence Design Systems, its main rival in chip-design software. It also trades with the AI chip complex that drives chip-design budgets, including TSMC, the custom-silicon programs at Amazon and the Nasdaq 100. The Nasdaq 100 hit a record in the week to 2 October 2026.

The semiconductor foundry and equipment group has drawn heavy attention through September and October. Synopsys' gain is tied to its own guidance, but a broad pullback in AI semiconductor stocks or a further rise in the 10-year yield above 5.25% would likely pull the shares down with the group. The $1 billion repurchase underway provides some buying of the company's own shares that peers without buybacks lack.

Notes

  • Synopsys' fiscal year ends in late October, so its fourth-quarter and full-year results usually come out in December.
  • Synopsys reports large gaps between GAAP and non-GAAP earnings, mostly from amortization of the 2025 Ansys acquisition and from stock compensation.
  • Year-over-year revenue comparisons through mid-2026 are inflated by Ansys, which Synopsys bought in July 2025.
