How to read this

The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 9 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.

Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.

Kill line

A daily close below $76, which would extend the September slide well below the 30 September 2026 close of $80.05; or a 13 October 2026 report that cuts the roughly $50 billion 2026 net interest income guidance.

Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

The thesis

Wells Fargo's earnings are still rising, but its shares trade near their 2026 lows because the market pays less for each dollar of profit since the Federal Reserve began raising rates again. The third-quarter report on 13 October 2026 settles it: it shows whether loan growth and steadier margins offset fading venture-capital gains. A run of analyst upgrades since 1 October 2026 has not changed the balance much, and a federal housing probe opened on 7 October 2026 adds a new risk.

Since the 1 October 2026 note, the shares have recovered a little. They closed at $82.03 on 8 October 2026, up from $80.05 on 30 September 2026, but still 13.5% below the 52-week high of $94.83 and down 5.9% over three months, per adjusted daily closes. TIKR data cited by Yahoo Finance on 29 September 2026 show the forward price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) down from about 14 at the end of 2025 to about 11, while next-twelve-month consensus earnings per share (EPS) rose about 8%.

The narrative is maturing: growth since the asset cap was lifted in June 2025 is widely known, and the 5 October 2026 Morgan Stanley upgrade revived sell-side interest without new company data. Crowding is low. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI) was 34.9 on 8 October 2026, up from 20.8 on 30 September 2026, and the report is three trading days away.

Bullish and bearish views on Wells Fargo & Company

The bull case on Wells Fargo & Company (WFC), in brief: Morgan Stanley turned positive. The bear case: Benzinga put third-quarter consensus at $1.85 EPS on $22.34 billion of revenue on 29 September 2026, below the second quarter's $2.00.

Bull case

  • Morgan Stanley turned positive. On 5 October 2026 Morgan Stanley upgraded Wells Fargo from Equal-Weight to Overweight with a $102 target and named it a Top Pick. TIKR reported the firm's view that asset-cap headwinds are easing and that net interest margin should stabilise and then improve.
  • More firms hold Buy ratings. TD Cowen reinstated coverage at Buy with a $95 target on 8 October 2026, and Truist Securities raised its target to $95 (Buy) on 1 October 2026.
  • Second-quarter results were strong. Wells Fargo reported second-quarter 2026 diluted EPS of $2.00, up 25% year on year, on revenue of $22.6 billion, up 9% (company release, 14 July 2026). Return on tangible common equity reached 17.7%, inside the bank's 17% to 18% target, per TIKR.
  • Margin guidance improved mid-quarter. At the Barclays conference on 15 September 2026, Chief Financial Officer Mike Santomassimo guided third-quarter net interest margin flat or down about 0.01 percentage point, better than the earlier guide of a 0.03 to 0.04 point decline.
  • Full-year income guide held. In July 2026 management kept 2026 net interest income guidance at about $50 billion, including about $48 billion outside the markets business.

Bear case

  • Benzinga put third-quarter consensus at $1.85 EPS on $22.34 billion of revenue on 29 September 2026, below the second quarter's $2.00.
  • A new federal probe opened. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) told Chief Executive Charlie Scharf on 7 October 2026 that it is investigating whether the bank's programmes to raise Black homeownership violated the Fair Housing Act, according to the Wall Street Journal and HUD. The bank's 2017 pledge committed $60 billion in loans toward 250,000 Black homeowners by 2027.
  • Most target changes were cuts. Evercore ISI cut to $90 (1 October 2026), JPMorgan cut to $91.50 with a Neutral rating (2 October 2026), Goldman Sachs cut to $96 and UBS cut to $102 (both 5 October 2026), all per Benzinga.
  • Rate hikes weigh on banks. After the Federal Reserve's 16 September 2026 increase, the shares fell 8.4% by 24 September 2026, against about 4% for the Financial Select Sector SPDR fund (XLF), per TIKR data via Yahoo Finance. Semafor reported on 5 October 2026 that worries about private credit have prompted a Fed review.

Price setup

The shares closed at $82.03 on 8 October 2026. The low point of the September slide was the $80.05 close on 30 September 2026. Prior closes of $83.15 on 22 September 2026 and $88.16 on 16 September 2026, the day of the rate hike, mark where the selling ran. The 52-week high is $94.83.

The bounce since 30 September 2026 has been small next to the September drop. The RSI recovery from 20.8 to 34.9 shows the heaviest selling has eased. It does not yet show buyers in control. The report on 13 October 2026 is the next event large enough to move the shares out of the $80 to $83 range.

Catalysts, next 30 days

  • 13 October 2026 — Third-quarter 2026 results, released about 7:00 a.m. Eastern with a 10:00 a.m. call. The report shows whether EPS clears the $1.85 consensus without venture-capital gains, whether margins held near flat and whether the roughly $50 billion 2026 net interest income guide stands. Management comments on the HUD probe are also likely.
  • 28 October 2026 — Federal Reserve rate decision. Another hike, or signals of more, would test bank shares again after the reaction to the 16 September 2026 increase.

What would change the view

The case breaks if the 13 October 2026 report cuts the roughly $50 billion 2026 net interest income guide, shows third-quarter margin falling more than the 0.01 percentage point guided in September, or shows a sharp rise in credit-loss provisions. Any sign that the HUD probe leads to penalties or restrictions on mortgage lending would also weaken it. On price, a daily close below $76 would carry the slide well below the 30 September 2026 close of $80.05.

The read would improve if third-quarter EPS beats $1.85 with the income guide held, and if the shares then close back above the $88.16 level of 16 September 2026. That would show the post-hike discount starting to close.

What it trades with

Wells Fargo trades with large US bank shares and the XLF fund, and it moves most on the Federal Reserve's rate path. It fell more than the XLF fund after the 16 September 2026 hike, so it has lately acted as a higher-beta bank name. It depends more on net interest income than investment-bank peers. That makes deposit costs and the margin guide its main earnings drivers. Sector-wide reviews, such as the private-credit scrutiny Semafor reported on 5 October 2026, tend to move the group together.
