The prior break level failed: 2026-08-24 closed $65.40, roughly a third below the 2026-08-17 intraday $97.79 and back at the $64.25 April secondary price, erasing almost the whole post-Q2 gap while contracted InP demand keeps building. The 2026-08-26 NVIDIA print is a sector event; the first company-specific number is not until 2026-10-29.

Current Thesis
The level the prior note named as the break gave way. On 2026-08-24 the shares closed $65.40 — the first daily close beneath $69 in this leg, following the 2026-08-21 close of $70.74 and that session's $68.30 intraday probe. Measured from the 2026-08-17 intraday high of $97.79, that is a give-back of roughly a third in five sessions. The shares now sit 53.6% below the $140.83 52-week high, with a three-month price change of -50.7%.
Two things about that number are worth holding side by side. Second, RSI(14) reads 50.1 — the swings have been symmetric enough in both directions that fourteen-day momentum is neutral at a price that has retraced almost all of the 2026-07-31 post-Q2 gap, when the stock traded $62.97 pre-market and closed the session up 25.3%.
The contract record and the tape have fully separated. Backlog above $100M as of the 2026-07-30 call, $87M of Lumentum reservation deposits, a $22.3M Coherent prepayment, a fixed CY2027 Casela quantity at RMB 173,000,000 — none of it has produced a higher high since 2026-08-17.
The narrative is saturated. Three dates carry the label. The strongest fundamental headline of the entire leg — Nomura-cited data on 2026-08-17 showing 2-inch InP substrates at RMB 880 per wafer, up 76% from RMB 550 across H1 2026, and 3-inch at RMB 3,200, up 78% from RMB 1,800 — was round-tripped inside three sessions, with an 8.5% drop to $75.28 on 2026-08-18 and a further 7%-plus decline into the 2026-08-24 close. Tradr debuted first-to-market single-stock ETFs on AXT alongside Meta, Coherent and Lightwave Logic on 2026-08-18, after existing levered AXT products moved as much as 49% in the 2026-07-31 session; leverage product supply arriving after a 30%-plus earnings gap is late-cycle plumbing. And the highest target in the coverage set, Northland's $125, dates to a 2026-06-25 reiteration after a raise from $90 — it has not been refreshed through either the record Q2 or the August drawdown, while the most recent action was B. Riley staying Neutral and lifting to $55 from $52 on 2026-07-31.
The narrative has not failed. What has thinned to nothing is the marginal bid for it.
Bullish and bearish views on AXT Inc
The model's bull view on AXT Inc (AXTI), in brief: Q2 2026 print, 2026-07-30: revenue $47.6M versus $18.0M a year earlier and $34.1M consensus; indium phosphide revenue $30.7M, a company record; GAAP gross margin 44.9% against 29.6% in Q1; non-GAAP EPS $0.19 against $0.07 expected. The bear view: The 2026-08-24 close of $65.40 has erased the leg. Both cases follow in full.
Bull Case
- Q2 2026 print, 2026-07-30: revenue $47.6M versus $18.0M a year earlier and $34.1M consensus; indium phosphide revenue $30.7M, a company record; GAAP gross margin 44.9% against 29.6% in Q1; non-GAAP EPS $0.19 against $0.07 expected.
- Q3 2026 guidance, 2026-07-30 call: roughly $66.0M revenue and $0.30–$0.32 non-GAAP EPS, with management stating the guide rests only on export permits already granted or on product outside the restricted set.
- Three committed customer agreements inside seven weeks: Casela, fixed CY2027 InP quantity at RMB 173,000,000 (~$25.4M), signed 2026-06-11; a three-year Coherent 6-inch InP master supply agreement effective 2026-06-25 with a $22.3M prepayment (8-K filed 2026-07-02); the Lumentum Capacity Reservation Agreement entered 2026-07-26 running through 2031, backed by two deposits of $43,500,000 each applied as shipment credits.
- Customer-side confirmation, 2026-08-12: Coherent said on its FQ4 FY2026 call it is on track to double internal InP output year over year by the end of the current quarter, one quarter ahead of plan, after 80% YoY growth in InP laser production in the June quarter, and that it has "secured the substrates and other critical inputs required to support this ramp."
- The shortage is being described by third parties, not only by the company: TrendForce framed InP as an AI optical-interconnect bottleneck on 2026-08-06, and a Taipei United Daily News report on 2026-08-17 described Q4 substrate increases brewing above 10%.
Bear Case
- The 2026-08-24 close of $65.40 has erased the leg. The $73.8 shelf built on 08-10 and 08-11 is four closes gone; $69 broke; the remaining structure below is the 2026-07-31 gap zone and the $64.25 April placement price.
- Every price catalyst since 2026-07-31 has been sold within three sessions. The 07-31 earnings gap, the 08-06 TrendForce piece and the 08-17 record-pricing headline each produced a spike that failed to make a higher weekly close.
- Insider distribution runs one way. Trailing-twelve-month insider sales are tallied at $78.8M with no purchases; Director Leonard J. the spike day — leaving 113,129 shares held directly, with the Rule 10b5-1 checkbox unmarked (Form 4 filed 2026-08-19). CEO Morris Young disclosed a sale exceeding $22M in early June, ahead of the 2026-06-05 session that closed near $89.04, down 15.99%.
- Equity supply into strength is a pattern here. A $550M underwritten secondary priced at $64.25 on 2026-04-21; authorized common was raised from 70,000,000 to 120,000,000 shares effective 2026-06-04 against 65,573,212 outstanding on 2026-08-03. The current price is back at the placement level, which removes the argument that the raise was opportunistic pricing at a permanent premium.
- China permit exposure is unquantifiable by management's own statement. The 2026-07-30 call put China at 40–60% of revenue and said timing and approval beyond already-cleared product cannot be forecast.
- Consolidation flatters the top line. $10.0M of the $47.6M Q2 revenue came from consolidated raw-material joint ventures, with minority interests deducted before GAAP net income.
Setup & Price Structure
Levels, in order from here: the 2026-07-31 gap zone around $62.97 pre-market, the $64.25 April secondary price just beneath the 2026-08-24 close of $65.40, the broken $68/$69 area, the lost $73.8 shelf from 08-10/08-11, the 08-14 close of $81.64, the 08-17 intraday $97.79, and the $140.83 52-week high. Nothing between $65.40 and $73.8 has held for more than two sessions in August.
Positioning observables rather than verdicts on them:
- Fast-money concentration. Levered and inverse single-stock ETFs track the name; existing products moved as much as 49% in the 2026-07-31 session, and Tradr added four more on 2026-08-18. Daily ranges have stayed wide — $68.30 to $76.48 on 2026-08-21.
- Short base. The prior reference is 11.02M shares short at roughly 1.11 days to cover, which is thin coverage relative to the size of the moves. The FINRA report for the 2026-08-14 settlement date is the next read on whether the 08-17 spike was covering.
- Sector-flow coupling. AXTI appeared in Benzinga's 2026-08-24 pre-market movers list on the same morning Applied Optoelectronics, SanDisk and Seagate were flagged lower, and in the 2026-08-18 list alongside Fabrinet down 9.1% after its print.
- Analyst dispersion is unusually wide and stale at the top. A five-analyst poll compiled by S&P Global as of 2026-08-24 shows an average target of $91.6 against a $55 low and a $125 high; the $125 was set in June, the $55 in July.
- Retail-facing coverage has turned backward-looking. Benzinga, 2026-08-04: "Here's How Much $1000 Invested In AXT 15 Years Ago Would Be Worth Today", citing a $4.21B market cap — a market cap the 2026-08-24 close no longer supports.
Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)
- 2026-08-26 — NVIDIA FQ2 FY2027 results, released ~1:20 p.m. PT with the call at 2 p.m. PT; management guided to roughly $91.0B revenue. Sets the demand tone for the 800G/1.6T optical build that AXT's above-$100M backlog is levered to. A sector event, not an AXT event.
- ~2026-08-26 (est.) — FINRA short-interest report covering the 2026-08-14 settlement date. Separates short covering from new long demand across the 08-14 close of $81.64 and the 08-17 spike to $97.79.
- ~2026-09-04 (est.) — Lumentum initial $43,500,000 deposit falls due, thirty business days from the 2026-07-26 agreement entry. Receipt converts a signed reservation into funded cash.
- 2026-09-10 — B. Riley Securities 9th Annual Consumer & TMT Conference, New York. First AXT-controlled dated appearance since the 2026-07-30 call, hosted by the one Neutral-rated broker in the set.
- ~2026-09-10 (est.) — FINRA short-interest report covering the 2026-08-31 settlement date.
- 2026-09-21 to 2026-09-22 — Morgan Stanley Asia Best Corporate Day, New York. The likeliest public venue for China permit exposure to be addressed.
- Beyond the window — 2026-10-29 (after close, confirmed on earnings-date trackers) — Q3 2026 results against the ~$66.0M / $0.30–$0.32 guide. The first company-specific number since the structure broke.
What Would Change Our Mind
The structure that mattered is already gone: the $73.8 shelf, then $69, then the 08-21 low. What is left beneath is the 2026-07-31 post-Q2 gap and the $64.25 April placement price, and those two sit within a dollar and a half of the 2026-08-24 close. A weekly close below $62 completes the round trip of the entire post-earnings advance and would date the step from saturated to a failed narrative on price, regardless of what the backlog does. A secondary condition: the 2026-08-26 NVIDIA print passing without a reclaim of the $73.8 shelf, or the Lumentum $43,500,000 initial deposit going unconfirmed past ~2026-09-04 — which would be the first slip across three customer agreements signed inside seven weeks.
The reverse case is equally specific. A weekly close back above $73.8 with the Lumentum deposit confirmed, or a Q3 print on 2026-10-29 that beats the ~$66.0M guide with Q4 guidance that does not carve out restricted product, would re-date the leg and force the saturated label to be revisited. Absent either, the burden sits on the tape: contracted demand has improved at every disclosure since 2026-06-11 and the price has made a lower high on each of them.
Correlation Notes
- Direct customers move the name. Coherent's 2026-08-12 InP commentary and Lumentum's ramp are the demand read-through; both are also AXT counterparties, so their capex language is a leading indicator for substrate orders.
- Optical-module beta dominates day to day. Fabrinet fell 9.1% pre-market on 2026-08-18 and dragged the complex; Applied Optoelectronics was flagged lower pre-market on 2026-08-24, the session AXTI closed $65.40.
- NVIDIA is the sentiment channel. The 2026-08-18 optical-group drawdown ran ahead of the 2026-08-26 print, and AXTI traded with it despite no company-specific news.
- China policy is an idiosyncratic axis. Export-permit headlines affect AXT differently from US-domiciled optical peers, given the 40–60% China revenue framing and Tongmei's post-2026-06-26 listing path.
- Substrate pricing is the fundamental input. RMB-denominated 2-inch and 3-inch InP wafer prices, published by industry trackers, moved the stock 18% on 2026-08-17 and are the cleanest non-company data series to monitor.
- Levered ETF flow amplifies both directions. Products tracking AXTI moved as much as 49% on 2026-07-31; single-session ranges above 10% have been routine since.
