Against its published line
Nothing is through its line on this close.
How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the pick wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 10 September 2026; a dot LEFT of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row stops competing and reads well clear, with a hollow dot to say the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Current thesis
AXTI's contracted-InP leg is intact on paper with no price expression: the 2026-09-02 close of $56.95 reclaimed neither the $58 line lost 09-01 nor April's $64.25 placement shelf lost 08-28, and no AXT release or filing is dated later than 2026-08-17 across a twelve-session, 40.7% decline. The 2026-09-10 B. Riley conference is the only company-controlled date before the 2026-10-29 print.
Kill line
A weekly close below $52 — beneath B. Riley's $55 from 2026-07-31, the lowest published number in the coverage set — confirms the $58–$64.25 zone as distribution with no base. Secondary: the ~2026-09-04 Lumentum deposit deadline and the 2026-09-10 conference both passing with no disclosure and $64.25 unreclaimed.

AXTI — AXT, Inc.
Current Thesis
AXTI closed 2026-09-02 at $56.95, up 1.50% from the 2026-09-01 close of $56.11. That is the first higher close since the 09-01 break of the $58 line this coverage has carried since April, and it reclaimed neither $58 nor the $64.25 placement shelf that went on 2026-08-28. Measured from the 2026-08-17 close of $95.97, the shares are down 40.7% across twelve sessions. A check of the company's news and filings listings on 2026-09-03 returns no AXT press release and no SEC filing dated later than the 2026-08-17 conference-participation announcement — the entire decline carries no company-generated item.
The leg an investor would be buying is contractual, not promotional. AXT sells indium phosphide substrates into the 800G/1.6T optical interconnect build, and through mid-2026 that scarcity converted into committed multi-year volume at rising wafer prices: backlog above $100M as of the 2026-07-30 call, two Lumentum reservation deposits of $43,500,000 each under an agreement entered 2026-07-26 and running to 2031, a $22.29M Coherent prepayment under a three-year 6-inch master supply agreement effective 2026-06-25, and a CY2027 Casela quantity fixed at RMB 173,000,000 signed 2026-06-11. No disclosed line in that set has deteriorated.
What failed is the price expression, and the narrative is dead as a price leg — the $64.25 shelf went on 2026-08-28 in a 12.39% session, the $58 line went on 2026-09-01, and the 09-02 bounce to $56.95 left both overhead with no company disclosure attached to any of it. RSI(14) reads 35.5 against 34.2 a session earlier: still above 30, so no washout extreme has printed even after a 59.6% drawdown from the 52-week high of $140.83 and a three-month price change of -46.3%.
Bullish and bearish views on AXT Inc
The model's bull view on AXT Inc (AXTI), in brief: Q2 2026, reported 2026-07-30: revenue $47.59M against $18.0M a year earlier (+164.8%) versus roughly $34.1M consensus; indium phosphide revenue $30.7M, a company record; GAAP gross margin 44.9% against 29.6% in Q1; non-GAAP EPS $0.19 against $0.07 expected. The bear view: Twelve sessions, -40.7% from the 2026-08-17 close of $95.97, with no AXT release or filing dated later than 2026-08-17 (listings checked 2026-09-03). Both cases follow in full.
Bull Case
- Q2 2026, reported 2026-07-30: revenue $47.59M against $18.0M a year earlier (+164.8%) versus roughly $34.1M consensus; indium phosphide revenue $30.7M, a company record; GAAP gross margin 44.9% against 29.6% in Q1; non-GAAP EPS $0.19 against $0.07 expected.
- Q3 2026 guidance from that call: roughly $66.0M revenue and $0.30–$0.32 non-GAAP EPS, with management stating the guide rests only on export permits already granted or on product outside the restricted set.
- Three committed customer agreements inside seven weeks: Casela signed 2026-06-11, the Coherent master supply agreement effective 2026-06-25 with a $22.29M prepayment (8-K filed 2026-07-02), and the Lumentum capacity reservation entered 2026-07-26 carrying two $43,500,000 deposits applied as shipment credits.
- Customer-side confirmation, 2026-08-12: Coherent said on its FQ4 FY2026 call it is on track to double internal InP output year over year by the end of the current quarter, one quarter ahead of plan, after 80% YoY growth in InP laser production in the June quarter, and that it has secured the substrates required for the ramp.
- Pricing, reported 2026-08-17: Nomura-cited industry data put 2-inch InP substrates at RMB 880 per wafer, up 76% from RMB 550 across H1 2026, and 3-inch at RMB 3,200, up 78% from RMB 1,800.
- TrendForce framed InP shortage as the AI optical-interconnect bottleneck in coverage dated 2026-08-06.
- Published sell-side has not moved down with the tape: aggregator polls surveyed 2026-09-03 record no rating or target change since the 2026-07-31 actions (Needham $90, B. Riley $55), with compiled averages near $91 and no published number below $55.
Bear Case
- Twelve sessions, -40.7% from the 2026-08-17 close of $95.97, with no AXT release or filing dated later than 2026-08-17 (listings checked 2026-09-03). A decline with no disclosure attached to it cannot be argued against with disclosure.
- Two structural levels are gone in six sessions: $64.25, the April placement price, on 2026-08-28 (-12.39%), and $58 on 2026-09-01 (-7.42%). The 09-02 close of $56.95 sits inside neither.
- Insider flow has been one-directional through the advance and the drawdown: Director Leonard J. CEO Morris Young disclosed sales above $22M around the 2026-06-05 structure break; trailing-twelve-month insider sales are tallied at $78.8M against no purchases.
- Issuance capacity is live: authorized common rose from 70,000,000 to 120,000,000 shares effective 2026-06-04, against 65,573,212 shares outstanding on the Q2 10-Q cover as of 2026-08-03, after the April 2026 placement of 8,560,311 shares at $64.25.
- The customer that publicly validated the substrate ramp is also vertically integrating. Coherent's 2026-08-12 statement that it will double internal InP output a quarter ahead of plan is a demand datapoint and a self-supply datapoint in the same sentence.
- China is modelled by management at 40-60% of revenue, and the 2026-07-30 call states export-permit timing and approval beyond already-cleared product cannot be forecast.
- Reported revenue is not all wholly-owned: consolidated raw-material joint ventures contributed $10.0M of the $47.6M Q2 2026 total, with minority interests deducted before GAAP net income.
- Subsidiary financing reset: Tongmei withdrew its STAR Market application on 2026-06-26, describes a Hong Kong listing as roughly a one-year path, and triggered a ~$49M (RMB 324.4M) 2021 PE redemption right.
Setup & Price Structure
The ladder overhead is defined by two dated breaks. $64.25 is the April 2026 placement price and the shelf lost on 2026-08-28; $58 is the line lost on 2026-09-01. Between them sits a band the market has now traded through in one direction only, which makes $58–$64.25 supply until a weekly close reclaims the upper edge. Below the 2026-09-02 close of $56.95 the nearest published reference is B. Riley's $55 from 2026-07-31, the lowest number in the analyst set; $52 sits under it and under both September closes to date, and a weekly close beneath $52 would leave no defended shelf between there and the pre-2026 range.
On crowding and positioning, the observables are these: leveraged and inverse single-stock ETFs track AXTI and moved as much as 49% in the 2026-07-31 session, and Tradr listed four more products on 2026-08-18 — one session after the $95.97 high-water close, which is product proliferation arriving at the top rather than into the decline. Insider sales of $78.8M over twelve months stand against no purchases. The authorized-share increase to 120,000,000 effective 2026-06-04 gives the company substantial unissued headroom against the 65,573,212 shares outstanding on 2026-08-03. RSI(14) at 35.5 on 2026-09-02 has not reached a washout reading, and one up-session after a twelve-session decline is not yet a structure. The base has not formed, so there is nothing here to chase; what would constitute one is a weekly close back above $64.25.

Elapsed catalysts
- ~2026-09-04 (est.) — Deadline for the initial $43,500,000 Lumentum deposit, thirty business days from agreement entry on 2026-07-26. Receipt converts a signed reservation into funded balance-sheet cash; it may not be separately announced and could surface only in the Q3 balance sheet. (passed 7d ago)
- 2026-09-04 — First weekly close of September, and the first weekly print since $58 broke on a daily reading. (passed 7d ago)
What Would Change Our Mind
The constructive flip has a level and a date attached. A weekly close back above $64.25 reclaims the April placement shelf and turns the $58–$64.25 band from supply into support; absent that, the 2026-09-02 bounce is one session inside a twelve-session decline. On the downside the thesis-break condition is a weekly close below $52 — beneath B. Riley's $55 from 2026-07-31, the lowest published number in the coverage set — which would confirm the whole $58–$64.25 zone as distribution with no shelf underneath.
Two elapsed-catalyst conditions would do the same work more slowly: the ~2026-09-04 Lumentum deposit deadline and the 2026-09-10 conference both passing with no disclosure of deposit receipt or China permit status, and $64.25 still unreclaimed at the 2026-09-25 short-interest print. On fundamentals, the flip is dated 2026-10-29: a Q3 revenue print materially below the ~$66.0M guide, a gross margin below the 44.9% Q2 level despite RMB wafer prices up 76-78% across H1 2026, or Q4 guidance that carves out product the Q3 guide included would break the contracted-volume premise rather than only its price expression. A permit denial or scope narrowing disclosed at that print does the same.
Correlation Notes
- AXTI trades with the optical-component complex on funding events it has no part in: on 2026-08-24 it was named among premarket decliners alongside COHR, SNDK, LITE and STX after Applied Optoelectronics announced a $600M offering.
- Coherent (COHR) and Lumentum (LITE) are simultaneously the counterparties on the two largest disclosed agreements and the read-through names for the sector; their reports carry AXT's demand signal and their capital raises carry its group beta.
- Levered and inverse single-stock ETFs on AXTI (Tradr, four additional listings 2026-08-18) mean a portion of daily volume is mechanical rebalancing rather than expressed view, which shows up as double-digit sessions with no company release.
- China exposure at a stated 40-60% of revenue ties the name to export-permit headlines across the Asia semiconductor complex independent of AXT's own order book.
