Above its line on the last close.
How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 9 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A daily close below $135, about where the shares traded around the 22 September 2026 Meta Muse partnership news. The case also breaks if third-quarter 2026 revenue growth comes in below 30% or gross profit growth falls short of the guided mid-to-high twenties percent.
Open pick Medium conviction, opened at $149.09. Since then +14.6% against the S&P 500's +1.9% (+12.7 pp). Kill line at open: $135.00 (daily close); graded by at the latest.

How picks are graded →The thesis
Shopify's revenue is growing more than 30% a year, and its Shop Pay checkout handles purchases made through Meta's Muse shopping agent. The third-quarter 2026 report on 3 November 2026 settles the case. It will show whether revenue growth held at the guided low-thirties rate and whether gross profit kept pace.
Little has changed in the price since the last update. The shares closed at $164.56 on 8 October 2026 in adjusted daily closes, against $164.44 on 6 October 2026. Benzinga put Shopify's market value at $213.62B on 8 October 2026.
A second AI platform is now pointing users at Shopify. On 8 October 2026 Elon Musk posted on X that Grok users can add a Shopify connector by asking the bot, per Benzinga. The shares did not move on it.
The narrative is maturing: Muse has been widely covered since the 22 September 2026 partnership news, recent gains came from analyst calls on 5 October 2026 and 6 October 2026, and the 8 October 2026 Grok post did not move the shares. The next new company figures arrive with the 3 November 2026 report.
Bullish and bearish views on Shopify Inc.
The bull case on Shopify Inc. (SHOP), in brief: Growth above 30% on every line. The bear case: Gross profit is lagging revenue.
Bull case
- Growth above 30% on every line. In the second quarter of 2026, gross merchandise volume (GMV), the total value of sales on the platform, rose 32% to $115.6B. Revenue rose 34% to $3.58B and free cash flow rose 55% to $654M, per the company's 5 August 2026 release.
- Profits are growing faster than sales. Second-quarter operating income rose 68% to $488M, and the free cash flow margin reached 18%, per the same release.
- AI platforms are building on Shopify. Muse checks out through Shop Pay and has had access to Shopify's product catalogue since launch, per The Motley Fool on 3 October 2026. Musk's 8 October 2026 post adds xAI's Grok as a second assistant with a Shopify connector.
- Analyst targets sit above the price. JPMorgan raised its target to $200 from $185 on 6 October 2026 (GuruFocus), Piper Sandler holds $180 (Benzinga, 5 October 2026) and Wedbush holds $176 (23 September 2026). All three are above the $164.56 close on 8 October 2026.
- One analyst sees growth lasting into 2027. Piper Sandler projects 32% revenue growth in 2027 against a 26% consensus, per Benzinga on 5 October 2026.
Bear case
- Gross profit is lagging revenue. Third-quarter guidance from 5 August 2026 calls for gross profit growth in the mid-to-high twenties percent against low-thirties revenue growth, so margins are narrowing.
- Agent commerce is still small. An expert consulted by Piper Sandler estimated that agents drive less than 2% of GMV, against 3% to 5% for traffic from large language models, per Benzinga on 5 October 2026.
- Meta is weighing a cut of its own. Meta President Dina Powell McCormick said Muse may earn money through a fee on user savings and through paid subscriptions, per Benzinga on 30 September 2026.
- Amazon is competing for multichannel sellers. Benzinga reported on 24 September 2026 that Amazon is rolling out free Seller Central tools for selling on eBay, Shopify, TikTok and Walmart.
- The valuation leaves little room for a miss. The Motley Fool put the shares at 106 times earnings on 5 October 2026, after a 66% gain since mid-May.
Price setup
The shares closed at $164.56 on 8 October 2026 in adjusted daily closes. That is 8.1% below the 52-week high of $179.01 and 31.9% above the price three months earlier. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI), a momentum gauge on which readings above 70 are conventionally read as overbought, stood at 82.4.
The consensus target was $172.77 across 54 analysts on 2 October 2026, per StockAnalysis.com, about 5% above the 8 October 2026 close. The shares fell the day after the Muse news in a "sell the news" move, per Benzinga on 23 September 2026. Crowding is visible in momentum and timing: an RSI above 80 with the earnings report 25 days out. The $135 level sits about where the shares traded around the 22 September 2026 Muse news; a close below it would erase the partnership gain.
Catalysts, next 30 days
- 15 October 2026: Reported Shopify integration for Muse's small-business tier, priced from $29 a month, per Technosports. Shopify has not confirmed it. It would extend the Meta tie-up from shopper checkout to merchant tools.
- ~28 October 2026 (est.): Meta third-quarter 2026 report. Any Muse order figures or fee plans show how much volume and economics reach Shopify merchants.
- 3 November 2026: Shopify third-quarter 2026 report, before the US market opens, with an 8:30 a.m. ET call, per the company's 6 October 2026 release. It shows whether revenue growth held in the low thirties and how far gross profit growth trailed.
What would change the view
The case breaks if third-quarter 2026 revenue growth comes in below 30% or gross profit growth falls short of the guided mid-to-high twenties percent on 3 November 2026. Fourth-quarter guidance below the high twenties percent would also undercut the growth claim. A Meta fee on Muse purchases from Shopify merchants would weaken the agent-commerce part of the case. On price, a daily close below $135 would erase the gain since the Muse news and end the thesis.
What it trades with
The shares trade on AI shopping-agent news. They jumped on the 22 September 2026 Muse announcement while Intuit fell on fears that Muse would displace legacy software, per Benzinga. Meta's own disclosures on Muse therefore move Shopify. As a stock at 106 times earnings (The Motley Fool, 5 October 2026), Shopify also tends to move with high-multiple growth software when rates or risk appetite shift. GMV ties results to US and global consumer spending.
Notes
- Shopify reports in US dollars and has listings on both the Nasdaq and the Toronto Stock Exchange; Canadian-dollar price targets are not comparable with US-dollar ones.
- Shopify has a dual-class share structure: a founder share gives CEO Tobi Lütke voting power beyond his economic stake.
- Shopify releases quarterly results before the US market opens, so the shares react to the report at that day's open.
