Kill line

A daily close below $1.50, which would extend the slide under a round-number level beneath the $1.95 close of 30 October 2026. A third-quarter 10-Q showing cash well under $37.4 million, a sharply higher share count and no customer contract would also break the case.

Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

The thesis

Smartbird, the former Allbirds, rents out dedicated AI computing clusters and still has no named paying customer. The shares closed at $1.95 on 30 October 2026, below the $2.00 invalidation level in the previous note. The third-quarter report (~6 November 2026, est.) settles whether cash, revenue and the share count support the pivot, and until it shows contract revenue the shares are more likely to trail the S&P 500 than lead it.

The one new company fact is a partnership with WEKA, announced 22 October 2026. Smartbird will pair WEKA's NeuralMesh data-storage software with its AI clusters to sell a managed, "sovereign-by-design" service to enterprises, and the companies call it the first of several planned partnerships (StorageReview, 22 October 2026). WEKA is a software supplier, not a customer, so the announcement adds no contract revenue.

The shares kept falling after the news. They closed at $2.33 on 19 October 2026 and $3.17 on 6 October 2026, per adjusted daily closes. The narrative is maturing: the pivot is well known, and the 22 October 2026 announcement drew no lasting buying.

Bullish and bearish views on Smartbird, Inc.

The bull case on Smartbird, Inc. (BIRD), in brief: Market value sits near reported cash. The bear case: Still no named customer.

Bull case

  • Market value sits near reported cash. The 10-Q filed 20 August 2026 reported $37.4 million of cash at 30 June 2026, before the $0.31 per share special dividend paid on 20 August 2026. At a $1.95 close the shares trade 86.9% below the 52-week high of $14.86.
  • Spending waits for contracts. Chief executive Nadia Carlsten told TechCrunch on 19 June 2026 that "everything that we build is backed by a customer contract". First-half 2026 GPU equipment spending was about $2.8 million, per the 10-Q.
  • Vendor ecosystem is forming. The 22 October 2026 WEKA announcement says Smartbird runs the full stack of facilities, compute, networking and data infrastructure. It is described as the first of several vendor partnerships.
  • Financing capacity is large next to the company. Only $8.25 million of a $100 million convertible note facility had been drawn by 30 June 2026 (10-Q).

Bear case

  • Still no named customer. The 19 August 2026 shareholder letter (8-K) claims access to "over $200 million of capital" and describes only example customer types. Company news through 30 October 2026 names no contract.
  • Share sales dilute holders. Smartbird sold 2,590,758 Class A shares for $15.4 million net in the second quarter through its at-the-market program (10-Q). A 11 June 2026 prospectus supplement registered a further $48.1 million for the same program.
  • Note conversions are approved. Shareholders cleared issuing Class A shares on conversion of the convertible notes, with 24.7 million votes in favor (8-K, 1 October 2026). $8.2 million of notes were outstanding at 30 June 2026.
  • Losses outrun revenue. Continuing operations lost $12.8 million in the second quarter of 2026 on $2.8 million of net revenue (10-Q).
  • The WEKA announcement lacks results. It reports no measured GPU utilization, power or cost figures for the clusters (StorageReview, 22 October 2026).

Price setup

The shares closed at $1.95 on 30 October 2026 in adjusted daily closes. That is 86.9% below the 52-week high of $14.86 and 1.8% lower over three months. The 14-day relative strength index, a 0–100 gauge of recent gains against losses, stood at 13.6, a reading far below the 30 level that marks heavy selling.

The previous note's $2.00 invalidation level has been breached on a closing basis. A relief rise is possible from such a low reading, but nothing in company news supplies a reason for one before the report. Crowding evidence points the other way: sellers dominate, an at-the-market program can issue new shares into any rise, and the report is days away.

Catalysts, next 30 days

  • ~5 November to 6 November 2026, est.: Third-quarter 2026 report and 10-Q. Quartr lists 5 November 2026 and GuruFocus lists 6 November 2026 with a 14:00 call; neither is a company confirmation. It shows 30 September cash, share sales, convertible draws and conversions, and whether lease revenue has started.
  • Any time: Further vendor partnerships, which the company said would follow the WEKA announcement.

Elapsed catalysts

  • Any time: A named customer contract or GPU purchase announcement. None has been reported through 30 October 2026. (passed 7d ago)

What would change the view

The case for a lagging stock breaks if the third-quarter 10-Q shows a signed, named customer contract with revenue starting, cash close to the $37.4 million reported at 30 June and a share count near 9,315,794 Class A shares. The opposite result, with cash well below that figure, a sharply higher share count and no contract, would confirm the bear case.

A daily close below $1.50 would extend the slide under a round-number level. A close back above $2.33, the 19 October 2026 close, would show the October decline reversing.

What it trades with

No current theme includes Smartbird, and the shares trade on the company's own financing and contract news. The GPU-rental peers, the neocloud companies, are the closest comparison on business model, but Smartbird's microcap size and share issuance set its price path. Moves in AI infrastructure shares have not been matched by Smartbird since the pivot was announced.

Notes

  • Smartbird, Inc. is the former Allbirds, Inc.; it sold its footwear brand and assets on 9 June 2026, renamed itself on 17 June 2026 and kept the ticker BIRD.
  • Dual-class structure: Class A shares trade on Nasdaq under BIRD, and Class B shares (2,493,399 at 10 August 2026) are unlisted.
  • An at-the-market stock sales program with Chardan Capital Markets lets the company issue new Class A shares into the market at any time.
  • Notes from a $100 million convertible facility can convert into Class A shares; shareholders approved that issuance in a vote reported in an 8-K filed 1 October 2026.
  • The third-quarter report date is listed by data providers as 5 November 2026 or 6 November 2026 and has not been confirmed by the company.
