How to read this

The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 9 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.

Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.

The thesis

Caterpillar's business is still running ahead of its share price, but the shares are now trading on bond yields, not on the order book. The company reported a record $72 billion backlog and $8.17 of adjusted profit per share for the second quarter. The shares closed at $796.18 on 8 October 2026, 25.1% below their 52-week high of $1,062.93. The third-quarter report, expected around 28 October 2026, shows whether orders held up as borrowing costs climbed.

The rebound described in the 7 October 2026 update has reversed. The shares closed at $863.44 on 6 October 2026, then fell 5.75% to $813.83 on 7 October 2026, according to JournalArta Global, and closed at $796.18 a day later. Two things drove the drop, neither of them company news. The 30-year Treasury yield touched 5.73% intraday on 7 October 2026, its highest since May 2002. The same day, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) opened a public inquiry into farm-equipment makers.

The narrative is maturing: the power-generation backlog story was mainstream by a Motley Fool feature on 7 September 2026, and since then the largest single-day moves (14 September 2026 and 7 October 2026) came from AI-industry commentary and interest rates. The case holds while the shares close above $775 and the third-quarter report shows backlog at or above $72 billion. With the last close 2.7% above that level and long yields still rising, the shares look more likely to lag the S&P 500 than lead it over the next three months.

Bullish and bearish views on Caterpillar Inc.

The bull case on Caterpillar Inc. (CAT), in brief: Backlog nearly doubled in a year. The bear case: Long yields hit a 24-year high.

Bull case

  • Backlog nearly doubled in a year. Backlog rose $9 billion in the second quarter to $72 billion, about 92% above a year earlier. Caterpillar's 4 August 2026 slides put 59% of it for delivery within 12 months, according to Investing.com.
  • Margins widened across the business. The adjusted operating margin was 21.9% in the second quarter of 2026, up from 17.6% a year earlier. Adjusted profit per share rose to $8.17 from $4.72 (company release, 4 August 2026).
  • Data-center power is still growing fast. Power generation sales rose 29% to $3.098 billion in the second quarter, led by data center applications, and Power & Energy segment profit rose 30% to $2.027 billion (4 August 2026 release).
  • Construction grew faster than power. Construction Industries sales rose 35% to $8.346 billion and segment profit rose 57% to $1.947 billion in the second quarter (4 August 2026 release).
  • Analyst targets sit well above the price. StockAnalysis showed a consensus target of $970.80 across 28 analysts with a Buy consensus rating on 7 October 2026. Truist Securities analyst Jamie Cook kept a Buy rating on 5 October 2026 and cut the target to $1,100 from $1,225.

Bear case

  • Long yields hit a 24-year high. The 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.73% intraday on 7 October 2026 and closed at 5.66%. Yahoo Finance noted that heavy equipment is usually bought on credit, so higher rates raise the cost of every customer purchase.
  • A federal inquiry hit the equipment group. The FTC and USDA asked farmers, repair shops and industry employees on 7 October 2026 to report possible anticompetitive conduct by agricultural equipment makers, with comments open until 7 December 2026, per Insurance Journal. Caterpillar fell as much as 6.4% that day; Deere fell as much as 5.7%, AGCO 8.4% and CNH Industrial 7.3%.
  • The valuation leaves little room. Yahoo Finance put Caterpillar's trailing price-to-earnings ratio at 35 times on 7 October 2026, at the high end for an industrial company. The $1 billion North Carolina capacity plan announced 30 September 2026 costs money now against demand that higher rates may delay.
  • AI-spending sentiment still moves the shares. On 14 September 2026 the shares fell 4% to $783.15 after essays by Anthropic's Dario Amodei and OpenAI's Sam Altman argued for slower frontier-model progress, according to 24/7 Wall St. No Caterpillar news accompanied that drop.

Price setup

The last close was $796.18 on 8 October 2026, 25.1% below the 52-week high of $1,062.93 and down 14.4% over three months in adjusted daily closes. The 14-day relative strength index stood at 46.6, down from an overbought 77.6 cited in the 7 October 2026 update, so the earlier stretched reading has fully unwound. JournalArta Global described the 7 October 2026 drop as a break below the 50-day moving average.

The nearest reference below is the $783.15 close on 14 September 2026, the low of the AI-slowdown selloff. The $775 invalidation level sits just under it. A close back above $863.44, the 6 October 2026 close, would mean the rate-driven drop had been retraced.

Crowding is visible in options activity more than in the share price. Benzinga's options scanner flagged large Caterpillar options trades on 1 October 2026, 6 October 2026 and 8 October 2026. No insider sales or share issuance appeared in SEC filings over the past 30 days. The third-quarter report falls inside the next three weeks.

Catalysts, next 30 days

  • ~28 October 2026, est. Third-quarter 2026 results. Earnings Whispers lists the report before the open, with a consensus estimate of $6.93 per share; some calendars list 29 October 2026, and Caterpillar had not announced the date as of 9 October 2026. The report shows whether backlog grew beyond $72 billion and whether the 21.9% adjusted operating margin held.
  • 28 October 2026 — Federal Reserve rate decision. The decision closes the 2026-10-27/28 meeting. With the 30-year yield at a 24-year high, the rate path now moves the shares as much as company news does.
  • 7 December 2026 (later) — FTC and USDA comment deadline. The public comment period on agricultural equipment market practices closes. Any move from inquiry to formal action against equipment makers would add regulatory risk.

What would change the view

The case breaks if the third-quarter report shows backlog below the $72 billion reported for the second quarter, or management cites deferred or cancelled data-center power orders. It also weakens if customers point to higher borrowing costs to delay construction or mining equipment purchases, or if the adjusted operating margin slips back toward the 17.6% of the second quarter of 2025.

On price, a daily close below $775, under the 14 September 2026 selloff close of $783.15, would show the market rejecting the backlog story even before the report. The reading would improve if backlog grows again in the third quarter while the shares recover above the $863.44 close of 6 October 2026.

What it trades with

Caterpillar now trades with long-dated Treasury yields and with the industrial group. On 7 October 2026 it fell alongside Deere (down 4% to $657.95), PACCAR (down 2% to $106.66) and the Industrial Select Sector SPDR fund (down 2% to $167.34), per Yahoo Finance. Its data-center power business ties it to AI-infrastructure sentiment, as the 14 September 2026 drop showed. On 2 October 2026 Benzinga tied a rise in the shares to easing rate-hike expectations and Broadcom's reported AI financing plans, so rate news and AI-spending news can push the shares in the same direction on the same day.

Notes

  • Caterpillar consolidates a captive finance arm, Cat Financial, so reported sales and revenues include financial-products revenue alongside machinery, energy and transportation sales.
  • Caterpillar sells mostly through independent dealers; the 29 September 2026 Fabick acquisition is an exception that brings a dealer chain under company ownership.
  • Caterpillar's reported backlog is an order book; the company discloses the share expected to ship within 12 months, so orders can still be deferred or cancelled.
