How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 9 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A weekly close below $17.20, under the 14 August 2026 close of $17.24 that preceded the post-results advance; non-payment of the approved $0.64 distribution by 22 October 2026, or third-quarter disposal gains well below the $100.2 million forecast at the 26 November 2026 report, also ends the case.
Open pick Medium conviction, opened at $19.61. Since then +5.0% against the S&P 500's +1.9% (+3.1 pp). Kill line at open: $17.20 (weekly close); graded by at the latest.

How picks are graded →The thesis
CMB.TECH's case now rests on record crude-tanker rates feeding fourth-quarter earnings and on further vessel-sale gains, after shareholders approved the $0.64-per-share distribution on 8 October 2026. The 22 October 2026 payment date and the 26 November 2026 third-quarter report settle it.
The vote removed the main near-term uncertainty in the case. The special general meeting on 8 October 2026 approved the $0.64 distribution and all other Supervisory Board resolutions, according to the company's results release. GlobeNewswire The payout splits into a $0.21 intermediary dividend, which carries 30% Belgian withholding tax unless an exemption applies, and $0.43 from share premium, which is exempt.
Shareholders also approved a separate distribution of $50 million to $250 million out of share premium. The release gives no timing for it.
The narrative is maturing: the disposal and distribution plan has been public since the 27 August 2026 results, the vote is done, and the shares closed at a 52-week high of $20.81 on 8 October 2026, up 34.8% over three months on adjusted daily closes. The next new information is the third-quarter report.
Bullish and bearish views on CMB.TECH NV
The bull case on CMB.TECH NV (CMBT), in brief: The cash return is approved and dated. The bear case: Third-quarter contracted rates fell.
Bull case
- The cash return is approved and dated. The 8 October 2026 meeting approved the $0.64-per-share distribution, with NYSE payment set for 22 October 2026. That is inside the October timetable the company gave on 27 August 2026.
- Spot tanker rates are at records. Gulf News reported on 5 October 2026, citing Poten data, that very large crude carrier (VLCC) rates on the Middle East Gulf-to-Far East route reached $1.3 million per day, against about $30,000 per day in early January 2026.
- Higher ship values support sale gains. Cyprus Mail reported on 29 September 2026, citing Xclusiv Shipbrokers, that a 15-year-old VLCC was valued at $135 million on 18 September 2026 against $83.5 million on 10 July 2026. Older ships are the ones a fleet renewal program sells.
- Disposal gains are scheduled. The 27 August 2026 results projected $231.4 million of vessel-disposal gains in the second half of 2026, including $100.2 million in the third quarter.
- Contract backlog cushions the cycle. The company reported a $3.26 billion contract backlog on 27 August 2026.
Bear case
- Third-quarter contracted rates fell. The 27 August 2026 release showed third-quarter contracted VLCC rates of $125,404 per day against $182,731 per day realized in the second quarter. Third-quarter freight earnings on tankers are therefore likely to fall from the second quarter.
- Headline profit includes one-time gains. Second-quarter 2026 net profit of $364.4 million included $127.4 million of vessel-sale gains, according to the 27 August 2026 results. Recurring freight earnings are smaller than the headline figure.
- Record rates rest on one chokepoint. The rate spike follows disruption around the Strait of Hormuz; Gulf News on 5 October 2026 tied the 43-fold rise in tanker costs to Hormuz tensions. A return to normal transits would remove the fourth-quarter upside quickly.
- The price sits above the average analyst target. StockAnalysis listed an average 12-month target of $20.45 from four analysts in early October 2026, below the $20.81 close on 8 October 2026.
Price setup
The shares closed at $20.81 on 8 October 2026, a 52-week high, after closes of $19.99 on 5 October 2026 and $19.68 on 6 October 2026, based on adjusted daily closes. The three-month gain is 34.8%. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI) is 56.6, which is a moderate reading for a stock at a new high.
The 14 August 2026 close of $17.24 marks where the advance after the second-quarter results began. A weekly close below $17.20 would undo that move.
The NYSE ex-date is 16 October 2026. Adjusted price history drops by the distribution on that date, so the quoted price will step down by about the $0.64 payout with no change in shareholder value. Crowding signals are limited: no insider sales or share issuance appear in company filings since the 8 September 2026 meeting notice, and retail attention comes mainly from tanker-rate coverage.

- 15 October 2026 — Ex-date on Euronext Brussels and Oslo Børs for the $0.64 distribution (record date 16 October 2026).
- 16 October 2026 — Ex-date and record date on the NYSE.
- 22 October 2026 — Payment on the NYSE and Euronext Brussels. Payment on this date closes the distribution part of the case.
- ~27 October 2026 — Payment on Oslo Børs, per the company's 8 October 2026 release.
- 26 November 2026 — Third-quarter 2026 results, outside the 30-day window. The case turns on whether the $100.2 million third-quarter disposal gain was booked and how much of the September and October rate surge is fixed into fourth-quarter days.
What would change the view
The case breaks if the approved cash does not arrive on 22 October 2026, or if the 26 November 2026 report shows third-quarter disposal gains well below the $100.2 million forecast. It also weakens if recurring operating profit falls sharply from the second quarter while sale gains hold up the headline number.
On the market side, a fall in VLCC spot earnings back toward the low six figures per day, in Baltic Exchange, Poten or Clarksons data, alongside reports of normal Hormuz transits, would remove the fourth-quarter upside. On price, a weekly close below $17.20 would erase the post-results advance that began from the $17.24 close on 14 August 2026.
What it trades with
CMBT trades with crude-tanker equities such as Frontline (FRO) and DHT Holdings (DHT), and with VLCC spot rates and Middle East shipping headlines. Since the Golden Ocean merger, the fleet also includes dry bulk, chemical, container and offshore vessels, so dry-bulk rates move the shares more than they move a pure tanker owner. The shares also trade in Brussels and Oslo, so European-hours news can move the NYSE price before the US open.
Notes
- The Saverys family and CMB hold majority control, leaving a thin free float across NYSE (CMBT), Euronext Brussels (CMBT) and Oslo (CMBTO); the price can gap on company headlines.
- Headline earnings regularly include one-time vessel-disposal gains, such as $127.4M of the $364.4M second-quarter 2026 net profit, so reported profit overstates recurring freight earnings.
- Distributions need shareholder approval; the dividend portion carries 30% Belgian withholding tax unless exempt, while share-premium payments are exempt. Adjusted price history drops on each ex-date.
- Ex-dates and payment dates differ by exchange because the NYSE settles T+1 while Euronext Brussels and Oslo settle T+2; Oslo payments arrive several days later.
- Since the Golden Ocean merger, the fleet spans dry bulk, crude, chemical, container and offshore vessels, so a pure tanker comparison understates its dry-bulk exposure.
