How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 12 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A weekly close below $64, which would give back the August advance. Separately, Q3 throughput below 296,000 barrels per day, operating expenses above $230 million, or the annual optimization target cut below $220 million would break the operating case.
Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

Delek US's refining recovery is unconfirmed until the third-quarter report, expected in early November, shows record summer margins turned into earnings. The shares closed at $76.60 on 8 October 2026, above the 11 September 2026 close of $76.10, after closing at $67.84 on 25 September 2026.
The narrative is maturing: refining coverage is mainstream, analyst targets cluster near the share price, and Mizuho moved to Neutral from Outperform on 8 October 2026. A weekly close above the $81.55 52-week high on upward earnings estimates would show the advance is still accelerating. A fall in diesel prices after Europe's stock release is the nearest threat to the margin case.
Bullish and bearish views on Delek US Holdings, Inc.
The bull case on Delek US Holdings, Inc. (DK), in brief: Reported earnings already improved. The bear case: A rating downgrade arrived after the rebound.
Bull case
- Reported earnings already improved. Delek's 5 August 2026 second-quarter release showed adjusted earnings of $5.48 per share, or $3.64 excluding the renewable volume obligation adjustment. GAAP net income was $169.5 million, or $2.71 per share. Company quarterly results
- Sell-side targets sit at or above the price. Raymond James and TD Cowen raised targets to $90 and Morgan Stanley to $81 on 14 September 2026, per Benzinga. Wells Fargo raised its target to $82 from $59 on 1 September 2026. Mizuho raised its target to $83 on 8 October 2026 while cutting its rating.
- Distillate stocks remain tight. The EIA reported a 2.1 million barrel build in distillate inventories for the week ended 4 September 2026. Stocks were still 13% below the five-year average. EIA weekly summary
- Financing reduces debt. The company priced $400 million of zero-coupon convertible senior notes due 2031 on 24 September 2026. Part of the proceeds goes to repay its term loan, and capped calls are meant to offset dilution. The repayment amount was not specified in the announcement.
Bear case
- A rating downgrade arrived after the rebound. Mizuho cut Delek to Neutral on 8 October 2026, per Benzinga. Mizuho had held an Outperform rating with a $66 target as of 11 August 2026.
- Diesel prices are falling. European gasoil futures dropped more than 5% to $1,377 a metric ton on 2 October 2026 after reports that Europe would release diesel stocks under US pressure. The earnings case rests on high diesel margins. Kitco report
- Convertible notes cap some upside. The 24 September 2026 pricing set an initial conversion price of about $85.31 per share, per Investing.com. Holders can convert into shares above that level, and the capped calls cover only part of the dilution.
- Third-quarter delivery is unproven. Management's 5 August 2026 guidance was 296,000–316,000 barrels per day of throughput and $220–230 million of operating expenses. Autumn refinery maintenance and any unplanned outage at the four refineries put both ranges at risk.
Price setup
Adjusted daily closes put Delek at $76.60 on 8 October 2026. That is 6.1% below the 52-week high of $81.55. The three-month gain is 32.5% and the 14-day relative strength index is 46.6.
The close above $76.10 meets the price part of last note's test for renewed strength. The earnings-revision part is only partly met: Mizuho raised its target but downgraded the rating. The $64 weekly-close level is a research threshold under the recent trading range, not a moving average.
Crowding evidence is mixed. CNBC flagged the refiner rally's historical precedent on 17 August 2026, and the company issued convertible debt on 24 September 2026. The third-quarter report is expected within about four weeks.
Catalysts, next 30 days
- ~14 October 2026, est.: EIA Weekly Petroleum Status Report. Federal holiday timing may shift the release a day. A distillate build would add to the diesel price decline after Europe's stock release.
- ~17 October to 25 October 2026, est.: European diesel stock release window. Europe is expected to release part of the diesel volumes over about 20 days, per Reuters-sourced reports. Faster releases pressure margins.
- ~21 October 2026, est.: EIA Weekly Petroleum Status Report. Refinery utilization shows how deeply autumn maintenance cuts runs.
- ~16 October 2026, est.: Company announcement of its third-quarter call date. Last year's announcement came on 17 October 2025 for a 7 November 2025 report.
- ~5 November 2026, est.: Third-quarter 2026 results. This is the first test of the 296,000–316,000 barrel-per-day throughput and $220–230 million operating expense guidance.
What would change the view
The case breaks if third-quarter throughput falls below 296,000 barrels per day, operating expenses exceed $230 million, or management cuts its annual optimization target below $220 million. It also breaks if distillate margins compress sharply after the European release and estimates fall.
On price, a weekly close below $64 would give back the August advance. A weekly close above the $81.55 high with rising earnings estimates would show the story is accelerating again. Sell-side Neutral ratings clustering around the current price would confirm a maturing story.
What it trades with
Delek moves with US refiners Marathon Petroleum, Valero, Phillips 66 and HF Sinclair, and with diesel and gasoline margins. Reports of European or US government fuel stock releases move it directly.
Delek owns the general partner and a majority limited-partner stake in Delek Logistics (DKL). A weaker DKL unit price lowers the market value of Delek's stake in it.
Notes
- a large share of its sum-of-the-parts value moves with DKL's unit price.
- Headline adjusted EBITDA includes a 50% renewable volume obligation (RVO) adjustment; Q2 2026 was about $639M adjusted versus $490M RVO-adjusted. Check which convention a quoted figure uses.
- GAAP and adjusted results diverge widely: Q2 2026 net income was $169.5M ($2.71 per share) against $5.48 of adjusted earnings per share.
- Four refineries (Tyler, El Dorado, Big Spring, Krotz Springs) mean an unplanned outage at any one can materially swing a quarter's throughput and operating expense.
- Renewable Fuel Standard and small-refinery-exemption decisions are an unscheduled regulatory swing factor for compliance costs.
- The $400M zero-coupon convertible notes due 2031, priced 24 September 2026 with an initial conversion price of about $85.31, add potential dilution above that level.
