Kill line
A daily close below $9.76, the 19 October 2026 intraday low, which would extend the full reversal of the October rally. Third-quarter revenue below the second quarter's $20.2 million, with no Datapoints or lab growth named, would break the case on business grounds.
Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

Ginkgo Bioworks' shares have recovered to $11.21 (close, 30 October 2026) from the $10.07 close of 19 October 2026, but the business behind them is still shrinking: second-quarter revenue fell 48% to $20.2 million. The third-quarter report on 5 November 2026, which the company confirmed on 30 October 2026, shows whether Datapoints and autonomous-lab sales can turn revenue back up.
The case is that Ginkgo is turning its robotic lab capacity into two products. It sells data generated on its own automated lines (Datapoints), and it builds and rents autonomous labs. The Eli Lilly TuneLab agreement of 16 September 2026 (Benzinga) gave that story a named pharmaceutical customer. NSF X-Labs and Araceli Biosciences announcements followed on 8 October 2026.
The price has moved faster than the filings. The shares closed at a 52-week high of $14.98 on 5 October 2026, the day call-option volume rose 898% (GuruFocus). The latest close sits 25.2% below that high and 19.6% above the close three months earlier. The narrative is maturing: the 8 October 2026 announcements produced only a one-day lift on 9 October 2026 (Benzinga), and no new commercial announcement has appeared since. The coming report is the first hard revenue test of the Lilly deal.
Bullish and bearish views on Ginkgo Bioworks Holdings, Inc.
The bull case on Ginkgo Bioworks Holdings, Inc. (DNA), in brief: A pharma major is a named customer. The bear case: Revenue is shrinking.
Bull case
- A pharma major is a named customer. The Lilly TuneLab agreement covers small-molecule and antibody developability testing through Ginkgo Datapoints (Benzinga, 16 September 2026).
- The lab network keeps adding pieces. On 8 October 2026 Ginkgo said it will give National Science Foundation (NSF) X-Labs researchers autonomous-lab access. The same day it integrated Araceli Biosciences' Endeavor imaging instrument into Nebula, its Boston autonomous lab.
- Autonomous-lab contracts are signed orders. The 5 August 2026 second-quarter release cites NSF-funded labs at MIT, Caltech, Northwestern and the University of Maryland, plus a $47 million, 97-instrument lab for the EMSL facility at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
- Management reaffirmed 2026 cash burn guidance of $125 million to $150 million (Q2 2026 release, 5 August 2026).
- The shares are holding above the October low. The close of $11.21 on 30 October 2026 is above the $10.07 close of 19 October 2026 and above TD Cowen's $11 price target (raised from $9 on 13 October 2026).
Bear case
- Revenue is shrinking. Second-quarter 2026 revenue was $20.2 million, against $39.1 million a year earlier. The company attributes the decline to program cuts under its restructuring (Q2 2026 release, 5 August 2026).
- Losses are not narrowing yet. The second-quarter net loss from continuing operations was $57.3 million. Adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) was negative $36.3 million, worse than negative $25 million a year earlier (Q2 2026 release, 5 August 2026).
- The new lab deals carry no disclosed revenue. The NSF X-Labs contribution is in-kind lab time, and Ginkgo has not said whether it will generate sales. Management gave no 2026 revenue outlook on 5 August 2026.
- Analysts still sit below the price. StockAnalysis showed three analysts with a Sell consensus and an average 12-month target of $8.00 on 19 October 2026. BTIG reiterated Sell with a $5 target on 4 September 2026.
- Insider selling came at the peak. A Form 4 shows the chief financial officer sold 2,403 shares at $15 under a Rule 10b5-1 plan, in the 5 October 2026 spike.
Price setup
The last completed daily close is $11.21 (30 October 2026). The 52-week high is $14.98, set on 5 October 2026. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI) reads 46.6, neither stretched nor oversold.
The October range is wide. The shares traded between $12.32 and $15.48 on the spike day, then reached an intraday low of $9.76 on 19 October 2026. That low is the level that would mark a full reversal of the rally.
Crowding evidence is mixed. The 898% jump in call-option volume on 5 October 2026 and the same-day insider sale showed heavy speculative attention near the high. Attention has since faded, but the report is four sessions away, and the shares have a record of large post-earnings moves; one third-party analysis puts the average absolute next-day move at 13.45%.
Catalysts, next 30 days
No upcoming dated catalysts on file — the dated entries below have passed.
Elapsed catalysts
- 5 November 2026: Third-quarter 2026 results. The company announced on 30 October 2026 that it will review performance on this date. It is the first report covering the Lilly agreement and shows whether revenue has stopped falling from $20.2 million. (passed 1d ago)
- ~5 November 2026 (est.): Form 10-Q. It would show cash at 30 September 2026, any at-the-market share sales, and any revenue detail on the lab arrangements. (passed 1d ago)
What would change the view
The case breaks if third-quarter revenue comes in below the second quarter's $20.2 million with no growth named in Datapoints or autonomous labs. It also breaks if the 10-Q shows new share issuance to fund losses, or if cash burn runs above the $125 million to $150 million guidance range.
On price, a daily close below $9.76, the 19 October 2026 intraday low, would extend the reversal of the October rally. A report showing higher revenue with Datapoints or lab sales named as the cause would strengthen the case. Even then, the 5 October 2026 high of $14.98 and the Sell-leaning analyst average of $8.00 frame how far the market has already credited the story.
What it trades with
Ginkgo trades on its own news flow more than on a sector driver. Its October spike came on a company announcement and a surge in options activity, and it coincided with double-digit gains in other small biotech and life-science tools names on 6 October 2026 (Benzinga). Its direction around 5 November 2026 depends mainly on the company's own revenue and cash figures.
Notes
- Ginkgo carried out a 1-for-40 reverse stock split in 2024; earlier per-share prices are comparable only on split-adjusted charts.
- Ginkgo has a dual-class share structure: Class B shares held by founders and insiders carry multiple votes per share, concentrating voting control.
- The company reports as a single segment since divesting its biosecurity business, so Datapoints and autonomous-lab revenue are not broken out separately.
