Against its published line
Above its line on the last close.
How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 9 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A daily close below $20.00, under Cohen's 10 September 2026 purchase price where the insider-led run began; a Cohen share sale or a revived stock-funded GameStop offer for eBay would also break the case.
Open pick Medium conviction, opened at $24.70. Since then +7.5% against the S&P 500's +1.2% (+6.4 pp). Kill line at open: $20.00 (daily close); graded by at the latest.

How picks are graded →The thesis
GameStop's chief executive, Ryan Cohen, has made four open-market share purchases since 10 September 2026, each at a higher price. That buying sits on a cash-rich balance sheet, a large eBay stake and a collectibles business growing above 50% a year. The case is modestly better than even, and eBay's 4 November 2026 report and GameStop's early-December third-quarter results decide whether it holds.
The shares closed at $25.28 on 8 October 2026, according to adjusted daily closes. That is above the weighted $24.4061 Cohen paid for 700,000 shares on 2 October 2026, per Schedule 13D/A Amendment No. 20. MarketBeat and 24/7 Wall St. reported a gain of more than 4% on 8 October 2026 while the S&P 500 fell. Both tied the move to insider purchases already on file; no new Cohen filing appeared on SEC EDGAR between 2 October 2026 and 8 October 2026.
The narrative is maturing: Benzinga's 8 October 2026 and 9 October 2026 pieces and 24/7 Wall St.'s 8 October 2026 article recap September and early-October insider buys, and no new business news has appeared since the 8 September 2026 second-quarter report.
Bullish and bearish views on GameStop Corp. Class A
The bull case on GameStop Corp. Class A (GME), in brief: The CEO keeps buying at rising prices. The bear case: The 8 September 2026 release blamed store closures, the exit from France and the prior-year Nintendo Switch 2 launch.
Bull case
- The CEO keeps buying at rising prices. Form 4 filings show Cohen bought 1,000,000 shares at a weighted $20.38 on 10 September 2026, 1,150,680 at $22.94 on 21 September 2026 and 450,000 at about $23.48 on 29 September 2026. The 2 October 2026 13D/A adds 700,000 at $24.4061 and puts his beneficial stake at 45,383,306 shares, or 8.9%. MarketBeat counts no sales by Cohen over the past year.
- Other directors are buying too. Director Nat Turner bought 10,462 shares at $24.33 on 1 October 2026, per his Form 4. MarketBeat counted 3.39 million shares of insider purchases worth about $76.2 million over three months as of 8 October 2026.
- Collectibles now carry the store base. Second-quarter collectibles sales rose 57% to $356.3 million, per the 8 September 2026 release, after 65% growth in the first quarter. Second-quarter operating income of $160.2 million was the highest second-quarter figure in company history.
- The balance sheet is large and liquid. At 1 August 2026, GameStop held $5.1 billion of cash and marketable securities, $0.3 billion of digital assets and 43.4 million eBay shares valued at $4.9 billion, per the second-quarter 10-Q.
- Debt is shrinking and guidance gives a yardstick. The company retired about $1.4 billion of convertible notes, leaving about $2.8 billion of long-term debt, and guided fiscal 2026 adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) above $650 million, per the 8 September 2026 release.
Bear case
- The 8 September 2026 release blamed store closures, the exit from France and the prior-year Nintendo Switch 2 launch.
- Profit depends on investment marks. Second-quarter net income of $298.7 million, or $0.51 per diluted share, included about $238 million of eBay-related gains and a loss of about $75 million on digital assets. Moves in eBay or bitcoin flow straight into reported results.
- The shares now trade above analyst targets. Argus raised its target to $25.00 on 23 September 2026 with a neutral rating, and Wedbush's target is $13.50 with an underperform rating, per Benzinga's ratings page. The 8 October 2026 close of $25.28 is above both, and MarketBeat on 8 October 2026 put the average rating at hold.
- The eBay pursuit is still open. On 3 May 2026, GameStop offered $125 per eBay share, about $55.5 billion in cash and stock, and eBay's board rejected it. A revived offer paid partly in GameStop stock would dilute existing holders.
- The rally runs on filings, not results. The shares rose 33% over the month to 8 October 2026, per 24/7 Wall St., with no new operating data since the 8 September 2026 report.
Price setup
The 8 October 2026 close of $25.28 is 4.7% below the 52-week high of $26.53, per adjusted daily closes. The shares rose 14.8% over three months. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI), a momentum gauge where readings above 70 are read as overbought, stood at 65.2 on 8 October 2026, down from 71.6 on 5 October 2026.
Cohen's purchase prices mark the reference levels below the market: $24.41 on 2 October 2026, $22.94 on 21 September 2026 and $20.38 on 10 September 2026. A close back under $22.94 would put the shares beneath the price of his largest single purchase. The last sharp pullback came on 25 September 2026, when Benzinga reported profit-taking after the multi-day rally.
Crowding is visible. Benzinga's options-activity scanner flagged large GameStop trades on 23 September 2026, 24 September 2026, 29 September 2026, 30 September 2026 and 7 October 2026, and the name appeared on Benzinga's trending lists on 22 September 2026 and 9 October 2026. The 30 October 2026 warrant expiry is the nearest scheduled event.
Catalysts, next 30 days
- 30 October 2026 — Expiry of about 59 million GME WS warrants at a $32.00 exercise price. With the shares near $25, exercise is unlikely; expiry removes the warrant overhang and confirms that up to $1.9 billion of possible proceeds will not arrive.
- 4 November 2026 — eBay third-quarter 2026 report, after the close. eBay's share price sets the value of GameStop's largest investment and the gain or loss reported on the stake.
- ~8 December 2026, est. GameStop third-quarter fiscal 2026 report. Shows whether collectibles growth still offsets falling video-game sales and how the eBay stake and bitcoin were marked.
What would change the view
A sale of shares by Ryan Cohen on a Form 4, or a revived GameStop offer for eBay funded with stock, would break the case, because insider buying and the balance sheet are its two supports. A third-quarter report showing collectibles growth well below the 57% of the second quarter, with total sales still falling, would remove the operating support. A weak eBay report on 4 November 2026 that pulls eBay shares well below the $101.30 average price GameStop paid on 15 July 2026 would cut the value of the stake.
On price, a daily close below $20.00 would put the shares under Cohen's 10 September 2026 purchase price, where the insider-led run began, and would end the thesis.
What it trades with
GameStop trades on its own drivers more than on the consumer-discretionary group. The group's weekly read has been maturing since 20 September 2026, and peers such as Signet, On Holding and Academy Sports trade on spending data that GameStop's share price has largely ignored since September. The closest links are eBay shares, through the 43.4 million-share stake, and bitcoin, through about $0.3 billion of digital assets. Retail and options flows, visible in Benzinga's whale alerts, add swings unrelated to either. The shares rose on 8 October 2026 while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq fell, according to MarketBeat; one session is too small a sample to measure index sensitivity.
Notes
- GameStop's reported net income includes mark-to-market gains and losses on its eBay stake and digital assets, so quarterly earnings can swing far from operating results.
- Shareholder warrants (NYSE: GME WS) carry a $32.00 exercise price and expire on 30 October 2026.
- Remaining convertible notes and warrants put the diluted share count well above the basic count: 592.6 million vs 448.8 million in the fiscal second quarter.
- CEO Ryan Cohen beneficially owns about 8.9% of the shares, including warrant shares, per his 2 October 2026 Schedule 13D/A, so his filings move the stock.
