Premium-large-format royalty narrative is maturing rather than breaking: price closed $52.74 on 2026-08-21, 1.8% off the $53.71 high, with RSI(14) cooling 74.5→55.5 since 2026-08-07 as Rosenblatt raised to $60 on 2026-08-10. No company number until the ~October Q3 print; the 2026-08-28 Dog Stars IMAX opening is the next read.
Kill line
A weekly close below $47 gives back the August shelf built above the 2026-08-07 close and unwinds the post-Q2 repricing; a secondary condition is the 2026-08-28 Dog Stars IMAX opening landing at or below the $18–23M domestic forecast with no second sell-side target above $54 by October.

Current Thesis
The leg on offer is unchanged in shape and further along in price: IMAX licenses a format and collects a royalty on other studios' grosses across a fixed-cost network, and the 2026-07-23 Q2 print put a 46.6% adjusted EBITDA margin under that claim (revenue $102.8M vs $93.746M consensus; adjusted EPS $0.43 vs $0.28). What has changed since the 2026-08-08 note is the character of the tape rather than the story. Shares closed at $52.74 on 2026-08-21, 1.8% under the $53.71 52-week high, after closing $48.49 on 2026-08-07 — and RSI(14) fell from 74.5 to 55.5 across that stretch. Price held near the high while the momentum reading unwound, which is consolidation at the top of the move rather than distribution out of it.
The one genuinely new datapoint is a bid on the sell side: Rosenblatt maintained Buy and raised its target to $60 on 2026-08-10, having set $50 on 2026-07-24. That breaks the ceiling of the July cluster ($45 Wells Fargo, $50 JP Morgan / Roth / Rosenblatt, $52 B. Riley, $54 Wedbush) that had sat on top of spot. No company-reported number lands until the Q3 release in late October, so the next eight weeks are priced off weekend box-office data, starting 2026-08-28.
The narrative is maturing. Mainstream attention peaked with CNBC's 2026-08-03 piece on July as the highest-grossing month in the company's 50-plus-year history at $257M. The block sell-side move was 2026-07-24; incremental flow since has been a single raise (2026-08-10). Fresh headlines have thinned, the story still works, and the price is still making highs on a cooling oscillator. That is the middle of a narrative, not its first week.
Bullish and bearish views on Imax Corp
The model's bull view on Imax Corp (IMAX), in brief: Q2 2026 (2026-07-23): revenue $102.8M against $93.746M consensus, +12% YoY; adjusted EPS $0.43 against $0.28 consensus, +65% YoY; adjusted EBITDA margin 46.6%, described by the company as record margins and cash flow. The bear view: The guide was reiterated after the record quarter, not raised. Both cases follow in full.
Bull Case
- Q2 2026 (2026-07-23): revenue $102.8M against $93.746M consensus, +12% YoY; adjusted EPS $0.43 against $0.28 consensus, +65% YoY; adjusted EBITDA margin 46.6%, described by the company as record margins and cash flow.
- July 2026 was the largest month in company history at $257M (CNBC, 2026-08-03). The Odyssey opened at $52M in global IMAX, took $44M in its third IMAX weekend, and became the fastest title to $200M in global IMAX box office.
- The build pipeline is a stock, not a hope: 38 systems installed in Q2 2026, the strongest Q2 in a decade, against a 421-system backlog (263 new, 158 upgrades) and a network of 1,809-plus locations in 91 countries.
- A target above the July band arrived on 2026-08-10: Rosenblatt to $60 from $50, the first published number materially above the $52.74 close on 2026-08-21.
- The exhibition cycle is corroborating: Benzinga reported on 2026-08-20 that 2026 domestic box office is running at levels not seen since before the pandemic, with the summer setting a record — the same gross pool IMAX takes its cut from.
- December is contracted: Dune: Part Three has booked roughly 400 IMAX screens with domestic IMAX exclusivity for its first three weeks from 2026-12-18. Avengers: Doomsday opens the same day with no US IMAX screens in that window.
Bear Case
- The guide was reiterated after the record quarter, not raised. On 2026-07-23 the company held FY2026 at approximately $1.4B global box office, 160–175 installations, and mid-40% total adjusted EBITDA margin with a 45% floor. A record July inside an unchanged full-year frame implies the back half carries the number rather than adding to it.
- The near-term slate is a step down in scale. The Dog Stars (20th Century Studios, Ridley Scott) opens in IMAX on 2026-08-28 with a Boxoffice Pro long-range forecast of $18–23M domestic opening — roughly a third of what The Odyssey did in global IMAX alone on its opening weekend. Flowervale Street already came and went on 2026-08-14.
- Two months with no company-reported check. Between 2026-08-21 and the Q3 release around 2026-10-22, the only evidence is third-party weekend grosses, which arrive weekly and cut both ways.
- December is one title deep domestically. The three-week exclusivity that makes 2026-12-18 a bull point also removes the fallback; a soft Dune: Part Three opening has no domestic IMAX substitute on those screens.
- Five of the seven published targets still sit at or below spot. Only Rosenblatt at $60 and Wedbush at $54 print above the 2026-08-21 close of $52.74.
Setup & Price Structure
The 2026-07-23 gap of roughly 11–12% is the structural event; Benzinga's same-day coverage attributed part of that move to short covering alongside the beat, so a portion of the initial repricing came from positioning rather than new buyers. Since then the stock has built a shelf between the 2026-08-07 close of $48.49 and the $53.71 52-week high, closing $52.74 on 2026-08-21 with a three-month price change of +34.8%.
Crowding observables, stated as observables:
- RSI(14) at 55.5 on 2026-08-21, down from 74.5 on 2026-08-07 while price closed higher — the overbought condition was worked off sideways.
- Distance from the 52-week high is 1.8%, so any new buyer is transacting at the top of the range with no company datapoint scheduled for eight weeks.
- Insider activity in the window is small: a Form 144 filed for a proposed sale of 500 shares, approximate value $24,950, from restricted stock vested 2026-03-07, proposed sale date 2026-08-06. No new insider transaction has surfaced in the feed since.
- Sell-side flow has slowed to a single action since the 2026-07-24 block: Rosenblatt on 2026-08-10.
- Benzinga ran an overbought-RSI screen of communication-services names on 2026-08-20; IMAX's own reading at 55.5 the following session is not in that zone.
The August shelf is the level that matters. A weekly close under $47 would put price back inside the immediate post-print range and unwind the August build.
Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)
- 2026-08-28 — The Dog Stars (Ridley Scott, 20th Century Studios) opens in IMAX and premium large format. Boxoffice Pro long-range forecast: $18–23M domestic opening. First meaningful per-screen read after The Odyssey's run.
- 2026-08-30 through 2026-09-07 (Labor Day frame) — the holiday weekend closes out the record summer Benzinga described on 2026-08-20; a soft finish is the first observable crack in the domestic gross pool.
- 2026-09-18 — Resident Evil (Zach Cregger) worldwide release, filmed for IMAX. The autumn slate's largest identified IMAX title before December.
- ~2026-10-22 (est.) — Q3 2026 results. Outside the 30-day frame but the next company-reported number; the point at which the ~$1.4B global box office and 160–175 installation guidance is either raised or reiterated again.
What Would Change Our Mind
The structure that would break first is the August shelf built above the 2026-08-07 close of $48.49 — losing it means the post-Q2 repricing is being given back with no fresh company datapoint to defend it. A weekly close below $47 is the gradeable version of that break.
Secondary conditions, each observable:
- The Dog Stars opens 2026-08-28 and IMAX weekend grosses come in at the low end of, or below, the $18–23M domestic forecast, with no offsetting IMAX-specific disclosure — the record-July run rate then reads as one title rather than a network effect.
- The 2026-08-10 Rosenblatt raise to $60 stands alone into October with no second target above $54 while price fails to close above $53.71 — the incremental bid was one desk, and the theme rolls to saturated.
- Any studio-announced date move on the 2026-12-18 Dune: Part Three window, or a change to the three-week domestic IMAX exclusivity.
The converse would strengthen the read: a Q3 print around 2026-10-22 that raises the ~$1.4B global box office guide, or installations tracking above the pace implied by 160–175 for the year.
Correlation Notes
IMAX trades with the theatrical complex but on different economics. AMC and Cinemark carry the real estate and the operating leverage; IMAX takes a royalty and reported a 46.6% adjusted EBITDA margin in Q2 2026. Benzinga's 2026-08-20 AMC piece and this name run off the same input — the 2026 domestic gross pool — so a slate disappointment hits both, while an exhibitor capex squeeze hits the 421-system backlog conversion specifically and leaves the royalty line alone.
The second correlation is to studio release calendars rather than to macro: Warner Bros., Universal and Disney date decisions move IMAX revenue with nothing changing inside the company. The third is international — 1,809-plus locations across 91 countries means FX and non-US box office, including China, sit inside the reported number alongside North America.
Notes
- IMAX earns a royalty on third-party studio titles, so quarterly comps swing on release-date timing as much as on underlying demand.
- Two revenue engines — box-office royalty and system sales/installations — can move in opposite directions inside the same quarter.
- Network spanned 1,809+ locations in 91 countries as of Q2 2026; reported results carry FX and international box-office exposure alongside North America.
- FY2026 guidance is framed as ranges (160–175 installations, mid-40% adjusted EBITDA margin with a 45% floor), so a reiteration is not automatically a downgrade.
