How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 9 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A daily close below $1,050, which would extend the pullback from the $1,280.34 52-week high to roughly 18%. A cut to 2026 revenue guidance at the 29 October 2026 report would also end the case.
Open pick Medium conviction, opened at $1,149.85. Since then +2.6% against the S&P 500's +1.9% (+0.7 pp). Kill line at open: $1,050.00 (daily close); graded by at the latest.

Eli Lilly's tirzepatide franchise (Mounjaro and Zepbound) still grows fast enough to carry the company, and analysts keep raising targets, but the shares have gone nowhere for three months. The third-quarter report on 29 October 2026 settles it. Sales need to support the raised 2026 revenue guidance of $85.0–$87.0 billion and come close to a Street estimate that already sits above that range.
Second-quarter 2026 revenue rose 48% to $23.0 billion, and Mounjaro revenue rose 91% to $9.9 billion (Form 8-K, 5 August 2026). The shares closed at $1,169.60 on 8 October 2026, 8.6% below the 52-week high of $1,280.34 and 0.9% lower over three months, based on adjusted daily closes. The view here is that a third quarter running at or above the top of guidance, or a raised range, narrows that gap. A pace below the range or a guidance cut would prove the view wrong.
The narrative is maturing: the obesity-drug story is widely known, and two target raises on 7 October 2026 and 8 October 2026, plus FDA approvals for Onswik and Jaypirca since late September, lifted the close only from $1,157.49 on 6 October 2026 to $1,169.60 two sessions later. Reported revenue now has to move the price.
Bullish and bearish views on Eli Lilly and Company
The bull case on Eli Lilly and Company (LLY), in brief: Tirzepatide volume keeps compounding. The bear case: The bar is above guidance.
Bull case
- Tirzepatide volume keeps compounding. Mounjaro revenue rose 91% to $9.9 billion and US Zepbound revenue rose 44% to $4.9 billion in the second quarter of 2026 (8-K, 5 August 2026). Revenue outside the US rose 172% to $5.2 billion, mainly on volume.
- Targets keep moving up before the report. Morgan Stanley raised its target to $1,430 from $1,419 on 7 October 2026, and Cantor Fitzgerald raised its target to $1,440 from $1,410 on 8 October 2026, both with Overweight ratings (Benzinga). Investing.com reported that Cantor expects a slight US beat for Zepbound this quarter. JPMorgan's target has been $1,500 since 28 September 2026.
- US access widened on 1 October 2026. CVS Caremark returned Zepbound to its commercial template formularies as a co-preferred option alongside Wegovy from 1 October 2026. Guggenheim cited the change when it raised its 2026 revenue estimate to $89.2 billion on 18 September 2026.
- Guidance rose in August. On 5 August 2026 Lilly raised 2026 revenue guidance to $85.0–$87.0 billion. Reported earnings per share (EPS) guidance is $35.50–$36.50 after $3.03 per share of acquired in-process research charges.
- The oral drug added outcome data. In the Phase 3 ACHIEVE-4 trial, Foundayo (orforglipron) showed a 16% lower risk of four-point major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and a 23% lower risk of the three-point measure, Lilly said on 30 September 2026. Cantor, per Investing.com on 8 October 2026, expects Foundayo to overtake oral Wegovy.
- Approvals outside obesity keep arriving. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Onswik, a once-weekly basal insulin for type 2 diabetes, as reported on 24 September 2026. On 2 October 2026 it approved Jaypirca for previously untreated chronic lymphocytic leukemia or small lymphocytic lymphoma, based on the Phase 3 BRUIN CLL-313 trial.
Bear case
- The bar is above guidance. Guggenheim put the Street's 2026 revenue estimate at $88.3 billion on 18 September 2026, above the top of Lilly's $85.0–$87.0 billion range. Cantor also flagged on 8 October 2026 that consensus already exceeds guidance and that pricing is a headwind this quarter (Investing.com).
- Prices fall as volume rises. US revenue grew 33% in the second quarter of 2026 on 37% volume growth, offset by a 3% decline in realized prices (8-K, 5 August 2026). A steeper price decline in the third quarter would slow growth even with strong demand.
- A large holder is selling into the price. Lilly Endowment filed a Form 144 on 7 October 2026 for a proposed sale of 300,000 shares valued at $347.2 million, after selling 302,403 shares for $385.7 million on 19 August 2026.
- Drug-pricing policy stays active. The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) sued on 7 October 2026 to block the Medicare Part B GLOBE most-favoured-nation pricing model. Reports say CMS (the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) plans to waive it for drugmakers with separate White House pricing deals, a group that includes Lilly after its November 2025 agreement. Pricing headlines still weigh on the sector.
- Rates are high for a richly valued stock. The 30-year Treasury yield hit 5.7%, a 24-year high, on 7 October 2026 and the 10-year neared 5.35% on 8 October 2026 (Benzinga). High yields press hardest on shares priced for years of growth.
Price setup
The shares closed at $1,169.60 on 8 October 2026, 8.6% below the 52-week high of $1,280.34 and 0.9% lower over three months, on adjusted daily closes. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI), a momentum gauge running from 0 to 100, stood at 54.7, a neutral reading. The close on 6 October 2026 was $1,157.49, so the shares have recovered only modestly despite the run of target raises and approvals.
Health care led on 7 October 2026 as one of only two higher sectors while yields rose (Benzinga), which shows the shares can trade as a defensive growth name in a weak market. A close at $1,050 would put the shares about 18% below the 52-week high and mark the pullback as a change in direction rather than a pause.
Crowding is moderate. The earnings date is three weeks out, the Endowment's Form 144 adds share supply, and consensus sits above guidance; retail attention shows up in Benzinga's options "whale alert" listing on 5 October 2026, but the momentum reading is neutral.

What would change the view
The case breaks if the 29 October 2026 report cuts 2026 revenue guidance, or if US realized prices fall far more than the 3% decline reported for the second quarter while Zepbound growth slows. A report that only holds the $85.0–$87.0 billion range while the Street sits near $88.3 billion would also weaken it, because the expected raise is already reflected in analyst targets.
On price, a daily close below $1,050 would end the case. That level sits below the recent trading range and would extend the drop from the $1,280.34 52-week high to roughly 18%.
What it trades with
- Novo Nordisk is the opposite side of the obesity market. Formulary decisions such as CVS Caremark's 1 October 2026 co-preferred listing move share between Zepbound and Wegovy, so Novo's data and pricing moves read across directly.
- Large-cap pharma pricing policy. Litigation over the GLOBE model, filed 7 October 2026, affects sentiment across US drugmakers at once.
- Long-dated Treasury yields. With the 30-year at 5.7% on 7 October 2026, long-duration growth stocks are sensitive to further rate moves, although health care led the market that day.
Notes
- Eli Lilly's results depend heavily on one molecule, tirzepatide, which is sold as Mounjaro for diabetes and Zepbound for obesity.
- Eli Lilly regularly books acquired in-process research charges when it buys or licenses drugs, which can sharply change reported EPS from one quarter to the next.
- Lilly Endowment, a large long-term shareholder, periodically files Form 144 notices and sells blocks of Eli Lilly shares.

ABBV
AbbVie Inc.
AbbVie's growth rests on Skyrizi and Rinvoq, which more than offset Humira's decline and back 2026 revenue guidance of about $67.6 billion. The 30 October 2026 third-quarter report shows whether both drugs still grow above 20%.
CYRX
CryoPort, Inc.
Cryoport's cell and gene therapy cold-chain business turned to positive adjusted EBITDA in Q2, and its shares have cooled to $16.90 from an $18.14 high. The ~4 November 2026 third-quarter report shows whether that profit repeats and commercial therapy growth beats 9%.
HALO
Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc.
Halozyme Therapeutics' royalty growth, up 50% to $307.7 million in the second quarter, and a 7 October 2026 Dutch patent win over Merck support shares 4.7% below their high. Partner reports from 13 October 2026 and Halozyme's third-quarter report, expected about 2 November 2026, decide whether raised 2026 royalty guidance holds.
IBRX
ImmunityBio, Inc.
ImmunityBio's bladder-cancer drug Anktiva grew Q2 2026 net product revenue 92% year over year to $50.7 million, which keeps supporting the shares despite directors selling in October. Third-quarter revenue, due in a possible October preliminary release or the November report, settles whether the growth run continues.
