How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 9 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A daily close below $175, well under the $187.44 close of 8 October 2026 after a three-month slide. A 14 October 2026 report with Wealth Management net new assets or pre-tax margin well short of Q2's $148.4 billion and 30.5% would also end the case.
Open pick Medium conviction, opened at $188.01. Since then +1.1% against the S&P 500's +1.9% (−0.8 pp). Kill line at open: $175.00 (daily close); graded by at the latest.

How picks are graded →The thesis
Morgan Stanley's shares have fallen further than its record second-quarter earnings support. The third-quarter report on 14 October 2026 decides whether the business or the run of worries sets the price. The shares closed at $187.44 on 8 October 2026, 17.5% below their $227.30 52-week high and down 14.8% over three months, in adjusted daily closes.
The bar for the report sits below the Q2 result. Morgan Stanley earned a record $3.46 per diluted share on record net revenues of $21.3 billion in Q2 2026. Zacks' consensus on 30 September 2026 called for Q3 earnings per share (EPS) of $3.06 on revenue of $19.88 billion. A Benzinga survey on 1 October 2026 put expectations at $3.10 and $20.52 billion.
The days since the last update brought one more cautious analyst and no new business data. TD Cowen started coverage with a Hold rating and a $210 target, Benzinga reported on 8 October 2026. The shares slipped from $191.02 on 6 October 2026 to $187.44 two sessions later.
The narrative is maturing: the move toward wealth management is well known, and six brokers cut targets or started at Hold between 25 September 2026 and 8 October 2026 while EPS estimates held. That leaves the report to carry the case.
Bullish and bearish views on Morgan Stanley
The bull case on Morgan Stanley (MS), in brief: Record quarter in both big divisions. The bear case: Fed scrutiny of private-credit lending.
Bull case
- Record quarter in both big divisions. Institutional Securities posted record revenues of $11 billion in Q2 2026, up 44% year on year, with record equities revenue of $6.3 billion. Wealth Management revenues reached a record $8.9 billion at a 30.5% pre-tax margin, according to the company's Q2 2026 results.
- Asset gathering at a record pace. Wealth Management added a record $148.4 billion of net new assets in Q2 2026. Client assets across Wealth and Investment Management reached $10 trillion.
- Large capital return under way. Net income rose 60% to $5.6 billion in Q2 2026. The company repurchased $1.5 billion of shares in the quarter and authorised up to $20 billion more starting in Q3 2026.
- Estimates held while the price fell. Zacks reported on 30 September 2026 that its consensus Q3 EPS estimate rose 0.03% over the prior month. Every recent target sits above the $187.44 close of 8 October 2026, from Citigroup's and TD Cowen's $210 to UBS's $236 (5 October 2026).
- Selling is stretched into the report. The 14-day relative strength index, a momentum gauge where readings under 30 usually mark heavy selling, stood at 23.4 on 8 October 2026, down from 28.8 on 6 October 2026.
Bear case
- Fed scrutiny of private-credit lending. New York Fed officials have visited JPMorgan, Wells Fargo, Barclays and Morgan Stanley since the spring to ask about private-credit exposure, risk management and collateral quality, Semafor reported on 5 October 2026.
- Private-credit redemptions keep running high. Investors asked to redeem 11.4% of shares in the roughly $7 billion North Haven Private Income Fund against a 5% cap, Bloomberg reported on 18 September 2026. It was the third straight quarter of capped withdrawals.
- Targets keep coming down. Wells Fargo cut its target from $240 to $223 on 25 September 2026, Citigroup (Neutral) cut to $210 on 30 September 2026 and Evercore ISI (Outperform) cut to $215 on 1 October 2026. UBS cut from $260 to $236 on 5 October 2026, BMO Capital cut from $250 to $215 on 6 October 2026, and TD Cowen started at Hold with $210 on 8 October 2026.
- Deal-list leak draws regulators. Regulators in China and India began assessing an accidental leak of Morgan Stanley's Asia deal list on 23 September 2026, Yahoo Finance reported on 27 September 2026.
- Merger talk hangs over the buyback. Semafor reported on 23 September 2026 that UBS leadership had discussed a foreign merger to leave Swiss oversight, and Morgan Stanley fell 1.04% to $196.32 on 24 September 2026. Co-President Dan Simkowitz said on 15 September 2026 that the firm has capital ready for acquisitions that add to its core business.
Price setup
The shares closed at $187.44 on 8 October 2026, below the $190.19 and $191.02 closes of 5 October 2026 and 6 October 2026 and the $196.31 close of 25 September 2026. The decline from the $227.30 52-week high now measures 17.5%, and the three-month loss is 14.8%, in adjusted daily closes.
The stock has lagged its peers. On 25 September 2026, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Citigroup each rose more than 1% while Morgan Stanley closed flat, Yahoo Finance reported. The S&P 500 set a record on 6 October 2026, TheStreet reported, while the shares kept falling.
Crowding evidence points to selling, with little sign of crowded buying. The relative strength index reading of 23.4 on 8 October 2026 is deep in oversold territory, and the earnings date is four sessions away. Television attention is the only visible retail interest: CNBC guests Malcolm Ethridge (2 October 2026) and Bill Baruch (7 October 2026) named the stock as a purchase. The MarketBeat consensus target was $222.85 across 26 ratings in early October, with 13 Buy or Strong Buy, 12 Hold and one Sell, ad-hoc-news reported.
Catalysts, next 30 days
- 13 October 2026 — JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citigroup Q3 reports. Peer trading, banking and private-credit disclosures set expectations the day before Morgan Stanley reports.
- 14 October 2026 — It also shows how much of the $20 billion buyback was used and what the bank discloses on private-credit exposure.
- ~31 December 2026, est. next quarterly repurchase window at the North Haven Private Income Fund. A fourth straight quarter of redemption requests above the 5% cap would keep the private-credit worry attached to the wealth franchise.
What would change the view
The case breaks if the 14 October 2026 report shows the wealth engine slowing. Wealth Management net new assets well below Q2's $148.4 billion, or a pre-tax margin well under 30.5%, would mean the price decline was tracking a real slowdown. Reserve builds or loan marks on private-credit lending, or a reported supervisory finding from the New York Fed, would confirm the bear case.
A confirmed large acquisition that draws capital away from the $20 billion buyback would also weaken it. On price, a daily close below $175 would put the shares well under the $187.44 close of 8 October 2026 and end the case.
The case strengthens if Q3 EPS beats the $3.10 Benzinga survey figure, buybacks run near the pace the authorisation implies, and analysts stop cutting targets after the report.
What it trades with
Morgan Stanley trades with the large US investment banks, chiefly Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan, around earnings and capital-markets news. In September and October 2026 it has also traded with private-credit sentiment. Withdrawals from funds at Blue Owl, Blackstone and BlackRock, along with JPMorgan reducing its private-credit exposure, hit the sector at the same time as the North Haven redemption caps, Yahoo Finance reported. Its lag behind Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Citigroup on 25 September 2026 shows company-specific worries, the deal-list leak and merger talk, adding to the sector moves.
Notes
- Morgan Stanley is a US global systemically important bank. Its buybacks and dividends depend on Federal Reserve stress-test capital requirements.
- Morgan Stanley reports quarterly results before the US market opens, in mid-January, April, July and October.
