How to read this

The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 9 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.

Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.

Kill line

A daily close below $50, which would put the shares well under the 200-day moving average and show the selling continuing; or a 14 October 2026 report that cuts the net interest income outlook or shows the net charge-off ratio above the second quarter's 0.47%.

Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

The thesis

Bank of America's shares closed at $53.61 on 8 October 2026, deeply oversold after management warned that third-quarter investment-banking fees would fall more than 10%. The third-quarter report on 14 October 2026 decides whether earnings have actually turned or only sentiment has. Until then, brokers are still cutting targets, and the evidence does not yet favour the shares over the index.

Since the 1 October 2026 note, the slide has continued, from a $54.43 close on 30 September 2026 to $53.61. Two more brokers have moved against the shares. JPMorgan kept an Overweight rating but cut its target to $62 on 2 October 2026, and TD Cowen reinstated coverage at Hold with a $60 target on 8 October 2026 (Benzinga). Analysts expect third-quarter earnings per share (EPS) of $1.16, up from $1.06 a year earlier, on revenue of $30.93 billion (Benzinga, 1 October 2026).

The narrative is maturing: the fee warning of 14 September 2026 is well known, and since then four firms have lowered targets into the report rather than raised them. What remains open is the size of the fee decline and whether lending income and credit hold up.

Bullish and bearish views on Bank of America Corporation

The bull case on Bank of America Corporation (BAC), in brief: The second quarter beat on every line. The bear case: Fee income is turning down.

Bull case

  • The second quarter beat on every line. On 14 July 2026 the bank reported EPS of $1.21 against a $1.13 estimate, on revenue of $31.56 billion, up 19.6% year on year (MarketBeat). Investment-banking fees rose 50% to $2.138 billion and Global Markets revenue rose 34% to $8.02 billion (24/7 Wall St, 16 September 2026).
  • Expectations are now lower. The $1.16 EPS consensus reported by Benzinga on 1 October 2026 sits below the second quarter's $1.21. A fee decline of about the guided size is already in the estimates.
  • Credit was stable at last report. The net charge-off ratio improved to 0.47% from 0.55% in the second quarter. The chief financial officer said on 16 September 2026 that delinquency trends showed "no real change" (24/7 Wall St, 16 September 2026).
  • Management raised its cost discipline target. In July 2026 the bank lifted its full-year operating-leverage goal to 3–4 percentage points, from 2–3, meaning revenue growing that much faster than expenses (Hudson Labs Q3 preview; 24/7 Wall St).
  • The selling looks stretched. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI) stood at 20.1 on 8 October 2026, well under the 30 reading conventionally treated as oversold. Morgan Stanley called the selloff "overdone relative to changes in the bank's earnings estimates" on 17 September 2026 (ad-hoc-news).

Bear case

  • Fee income is turning down. Chief Executive Brian Moynihan guided third-quarter investment-banking fees down more than 10% year on year on 14 September 2026, and the shares fell 5.1% to $59.47 that day (24/7 Wall St; ad-hoc-news). That reverses the main driver of the second-quarter beat.
  • Lower rates cut interest income. The bank estimates a one-percentage-point cut in rates would reduce net interest income (NII) by about $2.2 billion a year (24/7 Wall St, 16 September 2026). The Federal Reserve meets again on 28 October 2026.
  • Targets keep coming down. Truist and Evercore ISI cut to $62 on 1 October 2026, JPMorgan cut to $62 on 2 October 2026, and TD Cowen reinstated at Hold with $60 on 8 October 2026 (Benzinga).
  • The sector is out of favour. On 7 October 2026, nine of 11 sectors fell while defensive sectors led (Benzinga). Bank shares sold off together on 22 September 2026 on a flattening yield curve, with BAC closing at $56.20, down 3.04% (ad-hoc-news).

Price setup

The shares closed at $53.61 on 8 October 2026, 16.9% below their 52-week high of $64.48 and down 9.4% over three months, per adjusted daily closes. The decline has been steady: $59.47 on 14 September 2026, $56.20 on 22 September 2026, $54.43 on 30 September 2026.

The price sits below the 200-day moving average, which MarketBeat put at $56.25 on 1 October 2026. Regaining that average after the report would be the first sign that the selling has finished. A close below $50 would show it has not.

Crowding evidence points the other way from a crowded trade. The RSI reading of 20.1 reflects heavy selling, the report is four sessions away, and broker targets are converging on $60–62, still above the last close. The MarketBeat consensus target was $64.22 on 1 October 2026, from 20 buy and 6 hold ratings.

Catalysts, next 30 days

  • 14 October 2026 — Third-quarter 2026 results, released at about 6:45 a.m. Eastern with an 8:30 a.m. call (Bank of America newsroom, 30 September 2026). It shows the actual fee decline, the NII outlook and the charge-off trend against a $1.16 EPS consensus.
  • 28 October 2026 — Federal Reserve rate decision. A cut feeds into the bank's stated $2.2 billion annual NII sensitivity per percentage point of rates.

What would change the view

The case for a rebound breaks if the 14 October 2026 report lowers the full-year NII outlook, shows investment-banking fees down well beyond the guided 10%, or shows the net charge-off ratio rising above the second quarter's 0.47%. Any of those would mean earnings, and not only sentiment, have turned.

On price, a daily close below $50 would put the shares well under the 200-day moving average and show the selling continuing after the report. The opposite case strengthens if the report beats the $1.16 consensus, management holds its NII and operating-leverage guidance, and the shares close back above the 200-day average.

What it trades with

Bank of America trades with the large US banks and the yield curve. On 22 September 2026 JPMorgan fell 3% and BAC fell 3.04% on the same day on curve-flattening worries (24/7 Wall St; ad-hoc-news). Its sensitivity to rate cuts ties it to Federal Reserve expectations more than most large banks. The 7 October 2026 session, in which defensive sectors led and nine of 11 sectors fell, shows the shares moving with broad risk appetite as well as their own news.

Notes

  • Bank of America releases quarterly results before the US market opens, at about 6:45 a.m. Eastern, followed by an 8:30 a.m. investor call.
