Kill line

A daily close below $221.54, the 28 August 2026 close that the post-results rally cleared. Current cloud backlog growth below 24% at constant currencies, or a cut to the 2026 outlook or the guided 2027 revenue acceleration, would also break the case.

Open pick Medium conviction, opened at $233.62. Since then +4.2% against the S&P 500's −2.5% (+6.8 pp). Kill line at open: $221.54 (daily close); graded by at the latest.

The thesis

SAP SE's third-quarter results support a modest case for the shares: cloud demand beat forecasts and management steered its 2026 cloud revenue outlook to the upper end of its range. The next quarterly report, expected in January 2027, settles it by showing whether current cloud backlog growth holds at 24% or better and whether the revenue acceleration guided for 2027 still stands.

SAP's third-quarter statement, filed on Form 6-K, put current cloud backlog (contracted cloud revenue due within 12 months) at €24,144 million on 30 September 2026. That is up 28% as reported and 26% at constant currencies, which exclude exchange-rate moves. Reuters reported on 21 October 2026 that UBS had forecast 24% to 25%. Newsquawk listed consensus of €10.1 billion for revenue and €2.93 billion for adjusted operating profit, against reported figures of €10,270 million and €3,030 million.

The ADR (American depositary receipt, SAP's New York-listed shares) closed at $243.53 on 5 November 2026, against $240.59 on 22 October 2026. The narrative is maturing: the 21 October 2026 results are well known, and company news since 27 October 2026 has been product and partner announcements while the closing price has changed little.

Bullish and bearish views on SAP SE

The bull case on SAP SE (SAP), in brief: Backlog growth beat forecasts. The bear case: Management guides backlog growth lower.

Bull case

  • Backlog growth beat forecasts. Current cloud backlog rose 26% at constant currencies in the third quarter (SAP 6-K, 21 October 2026), matching the second quarter's rate and topping the 24% to 25% UBS forecast cited by Reuters.
  • The cloud outlook moved up. On 21 October 2026 SAP guided 2026 cloud revenue toward the upper end of €25.8–26.2 billion and cloud and software revenue toward the upper end of €36.3–36.8 billion, both at constant currencies (SAP 6-K).
  • Profit and cash grew faster than sales. Non-IFRS operating profit rose 18% to €3,030 million against total revenue growth of 13% in the third quarter. Free cash flow rose 36% to €1,718 million in the quarter and 11% to €7,968 million year to date (SAP 6-K, 21 October 2026).
  • Analysts kept raising views. Barclays raised its target to $288 on 23 October 2026, from $243 on 13 October 2026, and BMO Capital Markets raised its target to $265 on 22 October 2026 (Benzinga). Erste Group moved from Hold to Buy on 30 October 2026, with earnings estimates of $7.94 per share for 2026 and $9.36 for 2027 (MarketBeat).
  • It published its 14th interim buyback notification on 3 November 2026.
  • AI products are reaching release. SAP unveiled its SAP-RPT-2.0 tabular AI model and new Joule agent tools at TechEd on 27 October 2026, and made Cohere North generally available on its Business AI Platform on 4 November 2026 (company news).

Bear case

  • Management guides backlog growth lower. SAP's outlook, unchanged on 21 October 2026, expects current cloud backlog growth to slow slightly from 2025's 25% at constant currencies. That implies a fourth-quarter reading below the third quarter's 26%.
  • One-off help lifted cloud growth. SAP's 6-K says a multi-quarter catch-up from customers returning from financial distress raised third-quarter cloud revenue growth of 26% (25% at constant currencies).
  • Cloud margin slipped. Non-IFRS cloud gross margin fell 0.8 percentage points to 74.3% in the third quarter (SAP 6-K, 21 October 2026).
  • The profit outlook did not move. SAP held 2026 non-IFRS operating profit at €11.8–12.2 billion at constant currencies and free cash flow at about €10 billion on 21 October 2026, despite the quarterly beat (SAP 6-K).
  • AI's contribution remains unquantified. SAP's CFO told the Wall Street Journal on 22 October 2026 that the company is still weighing a new metric to show AI's effect on the business (via Benzinga).
  • Momentum remains elevated. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI, a 0–100 momentum gauge) stood at 71.5 on 5 November 2026, above the 70 line many chart readers treat as overbought, though down from 94.8 on 22 October 2026.

Price setup

The ADR closed at $243.53 on 5 November 2026, 5.5% below the 52-week high of $257.81 in adjusted daily closes, and up 16.8% over three months. The rally ran from a close of $214.78 on 9 October 2026 to $240.59 on 22 October 2026, the session after results.

Observable crowding is moderate. RSI has cooled from 94.8 to 71.5 in two weeks with the shares holding their gain. Defense World counted one Strong Buy, twelve Buy and seven Hold ratings on 1 November 2026. No earnings date falls in the next 30 days, and SAP is repurchasing shares, with no share issuance into the rise in its 6-K.

The $221.54 close of 28 August 2026 is the nearest reference below the current price: the post-results rally cleared it. A close above $257.81 would set a new 52-week high. Barclays' $288 and BMO's $265 targets both sit above that level.

Catalysts, next 30 days

No scheduled earnings report falls between 6 November 2026 and 6 December 2026. SAP's third-quarter statement lists no date for its next results. Two later events carry the case:

  • ~31 December 2026, est.: TechWolf closing. SAP agreed on 6 October 2026 to acquire the AI work-intelligence provider with closing expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approval, and with terms undisclosed.
  • ~28 January 2027, est.: Fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results. This report shows year-end backlog growth, whether cloud revenue landed at the upper end of its range, and what management now says about 2027.

What would change the view

The case breaks if demand weakens beyond what management has guided. Current cloud backlog growth below 24% at constant currencies in the next report would be more than the slight slowdown SAP describes. A cut to the 2026 outlook, or withdrawal of the guided 2027 acceleration in total revenue growth, would also end it.

This replaces the previous note's 26% backlog test. SAP's own outlook already expects growth to slow from 2025's 25%, so a reading of 24% to 25% would match guidance.

On price, a daily close below $221.54, the 28 August 2026 close, would give back most of the rally that followed the results and show that buyers had the gain.

The opposite outcome would also change the reading. Backlog growth at or above 26% in the next report would show management's outlook was too cautious and would strengthen the case.

What it trades with

SAP trades with large enterprise software names. It rose nearly 7% on 27 July 2026, the session Benzinga reported Adobe climbing as software stocks rebounded from an IBM warning. Sector-wide swings in sentiment about AI and software can therefore move the ADR regardless of SAP's own results.

The ADR is quoted in dollars while SAP reports in euros. Exchange rates flattered reported growth in the third quarter: current cloud backlog rose 28% as reported against 26% at constant currencies, so the constant-currency figures are the cleaner measure of demand.

Notes

  • SAP's New York-listed American depositary receipt is quoted in US dollars, while the company reports operating results in euros.
  • SAP reports IFRS and non-IFRS measures side by side; the measure must be identified when comparing quarterly profit figures.
