Resolved Graded and closed 2026-07-02 at high conviction — the published kill line fired. Coverage continued after the close; the read below is dated 2026-08-25 and is not part of the scored record. Research has since re-rated the name low; the record keeps the graded tier.

Current thesis

Q2 (7/16) beat every line and lifted FY26 growth guide above 40%, but the capex raise to $60–64B and a 2026-07-26 Samsung–Broadcom $200B foundry pact reopened the monopoly question. Theme cooled to maturing; price recovered to ~$415, still below the $438 pre-earnings pivot. Strength unproven until a higher low or a $438 reclaim prints.

Kill line

A weekly close below $380 turns the capex-anxiety pullback into a trend reversal and loses the May consolidation shelf; secondary break if a top-5 custom-silicon customer confirms 2nm volume to Samsung under the 2026-07-26 Broadcom pact, or the ~2026-08-10 monthly revenue rolls under +40% YoY.

Current Thesis

The leg being bought is a toll on leading-edge silicon: an AI die pays TSMC once for the wafer and again for the advanced packaging that turns it into a system. That toll was repriced upward before the volume was booked — the 2026-07-22 settlement reported by Nikkei via TrendForce put 2027 base wafer prices up 5–10% across advanced and mature nodes, with a 10–15% surcharge on HPC orders above committed volume, the first mature-node increase in over three years.

What changed in the three sessions since the last update is the price, not the operating data. The 2026-08-24 close was $410.12 against $418.95 on 2026-08-21. TradingKey put the ADR session change at −3.11%; in Taipei the 2330.TW line closed at a session low of NT$2,375, down NT$35, while the Taiwan benchmark fell 462 points through the 45,000 mark (BigGo Finance session report, 2026-08-24). No TSMC disclosure accompanied the move. RSI(14) is 44.7, down from 59.4 on 2026-08-21; the shares sit 14.1% under the 52-week high of $477.57, and the three-month price change has crossed from +3.8% to −0.4%.

That combination is the whole read. Operating data is still accelerating; the multiple is absorbing it.

The narrative is maturing. Dating it — the $438 pivot struck on the 2026-07-16 Q2 conference has gone unreclaimed for six weeks; the 2026-08-20 record export-order print bought back under one percent; the 2026-08-19 session carried two competitive headlines (Samsung raising advanced foundry prices up to 15%, Intel targeting the advanced-packaging position) and closed at $412.09; 2026-08-17 produced a twenty-year compounding retrospective on Benzinga, and Benzinga ran a "What's Going On With Taiwan Semiconductor Stock" piece on both 2026-08-18 and 2026-08-19. High coverage volume, compressed price response per headline. An upgrade to accelerating requires $438 reclaimed on a weekly close with $477.57 back in play; nothing in the last six weeks has done that.

Bullish and bearish views on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd.

The model's bull view on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (TSM), in brief: 2026-08-10 — July revenue NT$467.58B, +44.7% YoY and +5.6% sequentially from June's NT$442.68B, against a July 2025 base of NT$323.17B. The bear view: 2026-08-19 — Samsung raised advanced foundry prices by up to 15%, explicitly monetising tight leading-edge capacity; Samsung shares still fell nearly 8% in Seoul on the day. Both cases follow in full.

Bull Case

  • 2026-08-10 — July revenue NT$467.58B, +44.7% YoY and +5.6% sequentially from June's NT$442.68B, against a July 2025 base of NT$323.17B. Second consecutive month above the run-rate the FY guide arithmetic requires against an H1 cumulative of +35.6%.
  • 2026-08-20 — Taiwan July export orders US$97.94B, +61.9% YoY, an 18th consecutive month of growth and a monthly record; Jan–Jul cumulative US$602.03B, +52.5% YoY (MOEA). ICT orders including servers +89.5%, electronic products +71.7%. The forward-order series runs roughly a quarter ahead of shipments.
  • 2026-07-16 — Q2 revenue $40.20B (+33.7% YoY), gross margin 67.7%, GAAP EPS $4.31 against consensus $3.89, HPC 66% of revenue. Q3 guided $44.6–45.8B at 65–67% gross margin with 2nm dilution already inside the range; FY2026 growth "slightly above 40%"; 2026 capex lifted roughly $8B to $60–64B; a further $100B Arizona commitment taking that programme to $265B cumulative.
  • 2026-08-03 — 3nm monthly wafer starts tracking to 180,000 by early 4Q26 against roughly 150,000 in H1, two to three months ahead of plan; 2nm above 80,000/month by early 4Q26 and near 100,000 by year-end (Economic Daily News / Commercial Times via TrendForce).
  • 2026-08-11 — Binding definitive agreement with Sony Semiconductor Solutions for Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation in Koshi City, Kumamoto: TSMC contributes roughly ¥282B for 38%, Sony roughly ¥465B for 62%; volume production expected 2029, consolidated by Sony rather than by TSMC.
  • 2026-08-21 — Waymo unveiled its first custom robotaxi inference chip at more than 1,000 TOPS, built with outside chipmakers. Another design-win class outside the hyperscaler set that lands on leading-edge foundry capacity.
  • Sell-side positioning, as listed 2026-08-25 — stockanalysis.com shows 19 analysts at Strong Buy with an average 12-month target of $554.45, low $440, high $700; recent actions include Susquehanna raising its target to $600 from $575 and DA Davidson to $500 from $450, with Bernstein moving $430 to $554 on 2026-08-11 and Bank of America maintaining Buy on 2026-08-18. Every published target sits above the last close.

Bear Case

  • 2026-08-19 — Samsung raised advanced foundry prices by up to 15%, explicitly monetising tight leading-edge capacity; Samsung shares still fell nearly 8% in Seoul on the day. The pricing move follows the 2026-07-26 Samsung–Broadcom foundry pact reported at roughly $200B, which reopened the single-source question that underwrites the toll.
  • 2026-08-19 — Intel positioned to contest advanced packaging, the part of the stack where TSMC's CoWoS allocation is the binding constraint on AI system supply. Whether any customer has moved EMIB from evaluation to qualification is not disclosed.
  • 2026-08-24 — The ADR fell to $410.12 with no company disclosure, on Taiwan-wide profit-taking into the Nvidia print. Sector beta, not company data, set the price; the same pattern produced the late-July move from a $399.09 close to $374.67 during the SK Hynix leveraged-unwind rout that took roughly $2.18 trillion off Seoul's market on 2026-07-29.
  • Margin arithmetic — Q3 is guided at 65–67% gross margin against Q2's actual 67.7%. 2nm dilution is inside the guide by management's own framing, so the first quarter of 2nm volume is a step down.
  • Capital intensity — $60–64B of 2026 capex, a $265B cumulative Arizona programme, and a Kumamoto JV that does not reach mass production until 2029. The spend is committed ahead of the revenue that services it.
  • 2026-08-17 — Q2 13F filings disclosed reductions: Viking Global cut 29.0% to 3.2M shares, Tiger Global 12% to 4,881,008 shares, SoftBank 72% to 565,000 shares. Appaloosa and David Tepper added in the same quarter. Adjacent AI-complex selling was visible the same week — Dan Loeb exited Nvidia, Broadcom, KLA and Lam Research (2026-08-17), and Citadel unloaded 80% of its AI book in about $4B of block trades (2026-08-21).
  • ADR structure — the premium to the Taipei line averaged about 24% in July 2026 against a 7.4% ten-year mean. That spread can compress on days when 2330.TW is unchanged, and it is not a business outcome.

Setup & Price Structure

The 2026-08-24 close of $410.12 sits inside a range that has held since mid-July. The upper edge is the $438 pivot from the Q2 conference on 2026-07-16 — six weeks without a reclaim. The lower edge is the 2026-07-29 rout close of $374.67, which has not been retested; between them is the May consolidation shelf around $380 that the last note flagged as the structural floor.

RSI(14) at 44.7 puts the shares mid-range rather than extended, and the distance to the 52-week high is 14.1%. The three-month price change of −0.4% is the more informative number: a quarter in which revenue growth accelerated to +44.7% YoY and export orders set a record produced no net price change. Participation has not expanded on any of the last four bullish datapoints.

The positioning observables, stated without a verdict: all 19 published sell-side targets are above the market and the average is $554.45, roughly a third above the last close; three large institutional holders disclosed Q2 reductions on 2026-08-17; retail-facing coverage clustered on 2026-08-17 through 2026-08-19 with a compounding retrospective and two daily "what's going on" pieces; and an event TSMC does not control lands on 2026-08-26. As a foreign private issuer TSMC files 6-Ks, so there is no US insider-transaction series to read against any of this.

A higher low above $400 that holds through the 2026-08-26 print, followed by a weekly close above $438, would be the first structural evidence that the range is resolving upward. Absent that, the base has not formed.

Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)

  • 2026-08-26 — Nvidia Q2 FY2027 results, quarter ended 2026-07-26, call 2 p.m. PT (confirmed). Company guide roughly $91.0B; consensus near $91.9B revenue and $2.08 EPS.
  • ~2026-09-08 (est.) — Taiwan August exports, Ministry of Finance.
  • 2026-09-10 — TSMC August 2026 monthly revenue release, confirmed on the financial calendar, 13:30 Taipei.
  • 2026-09-16 — ADR ex-dividend date for the $1.114 per-share cash dividend, payable 2026-10-08.
  • ~2026-09-21 (est.) — Taiwan August export orders, Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Outside the window: the Q3 2026 earnings conference was still unlisted on TSMC's financial calendar as of 2026-08-17, with Wall Street Horizon forecasting ~2026-10-15 and flagging it unconfirmed.

What Would Change Our Mind

The structural break is the May consolidation shelf. A weekly close below $380 converts a six-week range into a trend reversal and puts the 2026-07-29 low of $374.67 back in play; that is the level this note is graded on.

Three non-price conditions would flip the read independently. First, the 2026-09-10 August revenue release printing under +40% YoY, or a second consecutive month of decelerating sequential growth after July's +5.6% — the FY guide of "slightly above 40%" requires H2 to run above 40% against an H1 cumulative of +35.6%, so one soft month is a guide risk rather than a rounding issue. Second, a top-five custom-silicon customer confirming 2nm or advanced-node volume to Samsung under the 2026-07-26 Broadcom pact, which would price the monopoly premium as a duopoly premium. Third, the 2026-08-26 Nvidia call passing without the $438 pivot coming back into play — a catalyst that comes and goes without a price response is what moves a maturing label toward saturated.

In the other direction: a weekly close above $438 with the 52-week high of $477.57 back in range, on the back of a September revenue print holding above +44% YoY, would restore an accelerating frame.

Correlation Notes

  • Nvidia holds more than half of TSMC's 2026–2027 CoWoS capacity. The 2026-08-26 print is the only customer-side read available before TSMC speaks on 2026-09-10, and the ADR has traded as a Nvidia derivative into it — the 2026-08-24 decline was attributed to caution ahead of that report rather than to anything TSMC disclosed.
  • 2330.TW leads, the ADR follows. Taiwan trades first; on 2026-08-24 the Taipei line closed at its session low of NT$2,375 and the ADR gapped to that reference. The premium between the two averaged roughly 24% in July 2026 against a 7.4% ten-year mean, so ADR returns carry that spread plus TWD/USD on top of the business.
  • Korean memory is a transmission channel, not a fundamental one. The 2026-07-29 SK Hynix leveraged-position unwind knocked ~$2.18 trillion off Seoul, took UMC down 9.7% and Kioxia down 13.9%, and moved TSMC 4.1% in the US on no TSMC news.
  • Geographic concentration is inside the ticker and cannot be hedged there — Hsinchu and Tainan fabs, the Taiwan grid, and Kumamoto seismic exposure.

Notes

  • 2026-04-19: Leading-edge foundry monopolist; all AI chips flow through here
  • 2026-04-22: Barclays Overweight, PT raised to $470 — second sell-side PT hike in a week (Needham $480 on 2026-04-16); upgrade cycle live.
  • TSM is an ADR over Taipei-listed 2330.TW; Taiwan trades first and the ADR often gaps to that reference rather than leading it.
  • The ADR premium to the Taipei line is itself volatile — about 24% average in July 2026 against a 7.4% ten-year mean — so ADR returns carry that spread plus TWD/USD.
  • As a foreign private issuer TSMC files 6-Ks, not 10-Qs or Form 4s; no US insider-transaction data exists for this ticker.
  • Taiwan rules require a monthly revenue release by the 10th; TSMC publishes at 13:30 Taipei time, an interim datapoint most US-listed semis do not provide.
  • Concentration spans the Hsinchu/Tainan fabs, the Taiwan grid and Kumamoto seismic exposure, none of which can be hedged inside the ticker.
  • TSMC's financial calendar still carried no Q3 2026 earnings conference date as of 2026-08-17; Wall Street Horizon forecasts ~2026-10-15 and flags it unconfirmed.
