Resolved Graded and closed 2026-07-10 at low conviction — the published kill line did not fire. Coverage continued after the close; the read below is dated 2026-08-25 and is not part of the scored record. Research has since re-rated the name medium; the record keeps the graded tier.
Current thesis
AI-compute narrative re-accelerated on the 2026-07-23 analyst event — named multi-gigawatt Anthropic/OpenAI commitments, Helios rack-scale ramp, TAM lifted to $2T by 2030 — drawing a fresh upgrade cluster (Roth $650, Cantor $700, Futurum $800). Accelerating into the ~2026-08-04 Q2 print, which is the binary.
Kill line
A weekly close below $500 forfeits the early-June breakout shelf and ends the acceleration leg; secondary break is the ~2026-08-04 print delivering in-line revenue with no Data Center raise while the upgrade cascade stalls and the theme rolls to saturated.

Current Thesis
The boundary named in the prior note has been taken out. The $500 early-June shelf, called there as the edge of the post-Advancing-AI acceleration leg, was lost on a weekly closing print of $473.25 for the week ending 2026-08-21, and the adjusted series extended to $456.75 on 2026-08-24 — 21.4% under the $580.91 52-week high, RSI(14) at 32.8, a three-month price change of -9.4%.
Nothing AMD has disclosed contradicts the fundamental leg. Q2 2026 (2026-08-04) put Data Center at $6.718B, +107% year over year and 58% of revenue, with $2.1B of segment operating income at a 31% margin against a $155M segment loss a year earlier. Q3 is guided to roughly $13.0B ±$300M against roughly $12.52B consensus. The gap is entirely between the company's reporting cadence and the tape's: the next AMD-reported checkpoint is roughly 2026-11-03, so for about ten weeks the name trades on NVIDIA's numbers, TSMC monthlies and the long end of the curve.
The narrative is saturated, carried from the prior note and now dated by two more sessions. The upgrade cascade that ran 2026-07-24 (Melius $660, Baird to a street-high $1,250) through 2026-08-13 has not produced a new raise. The single new entrant, BMO Capital's Outperform initiation at $550 on 2026-08-21, arrived below the 53-analyst average of $613.09. Hot Chips 38 on 2026-08-24 delivered the Helios architecture in full and no availability date, and the stock fell 3.3% that session inside a group move that took Intel down 5% and TSMC down 3% (24/7 Wall St., 2026-08-24).
Bullish and bearish views on Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
The model's bull view on Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD), in brief: Q2 2026, reported 2026-08-04: revenue $11.536B, +50% YoY against $11.28B consensus; non-GAAP EPS $1.66 versus $1.61; non-GAAP gross margin 56%. The bear view: The structural level that defined the prior frame is gone. Both cases follow in full.
Bull Case
- Q2 2026, reported 2026-08-04: revenue $11.536B, +50% YoY against $11.28B consensus; non-GAAP EPS $1.66 versus $1.61; non-GAAP gross margin 56%.
- Data Center $6.718B, +107% YoY, 58% of company revenue, $2.1B segment operating income at a 31% margin versus a $155M loss in the year-ago quarter (Q2 investor slides, 2026-08-04).
- Q3 2026 guided to ~$13.0B ±$300M against ~$12.52B consensus — the second consecutive above-consensus guide after $11.2B ±$300M versus $10.5B on 2026-05-05.
- Hot Chips 38, session dated 2026-08-24: Helios detailed as 72 Instinct MI455X GPUs with 96-core EPYC Venice hosts and Pensando Vulcano 800 AI NICs, 2.9 exaflops of claimed AI compute, 31 TB of HBM4 at 1.7 PB/s, 260 TB/s scale-up and 43 TB/s scale-out per rack (ServeTheHome, 2026-08-24). The 2027 doubling call rests on hardware that has now been described at architecture level in public.
- Coverage is still being started rather than only maintained: BMO Capital initiated at Outperform with a $550 target on 2026-08-21, citing Helios as a rack-scale competitor to NVIDIA's systems.
- $4.75B of senior notes settled 2026-08-17 — $1.25B at 4.600% due 2029, $1.5B at 5.000% due 2031, $1B at 5.250% due 2033, $1B at 5.500% due 2036 — funding the ramp without equity dilution.
- TSMC July revenue NT$467.6B, +44.7% YoY, with the August print due around 2026-09-10 as a vendor-independent read on accelerator volumes.
Bear Case
- The structural level that defined the prior frame is gone. Weekly close $473.25 for the week ending 2026-08-21 sits under $500; the 2026-08-14 reclaim attempt (range $481.80 to $515.98, close $514.39) was surrendered within three sessions.
- The $463 support level flagged in retail-facing technical coverage on 2026-08-20 closed below on 2026-08-24 at $456.75.
- The 53-analyst S&P Global average of $613.09 sits far above the 2026-08-24 close of $456.75, and that gap has widened by price falling. A stockanalysis.com compilation as of 2026-08-24 showed 41 Buy, 10 Hold and 0 Sell ratings, with a $365 low and a $1,250 high — no bearish coverage left to convert.
- Hot Chips gave specifications and withheld schedule. No shipment or availability date for Helios or the MI400 series was disclosed at the 2026-08-24 session, which is the checkpoint the September-quarter ramp claim would have been confirmed against.
- Realised earnings reactions have run wide of implied: 2026-05-05 delivered +25.9% against 7.0% implied; 2026-08-04 delivered -8.8% against roughly 9% implied. The distribution around the November print is not narrow.
Setup & Price Structure
Adjusted daily closes: $466.42 on 2026-08-19, $469.45 on 2026-08-20, $473.25 on 2026-08-21, $456.75 on 2026-08-24. RSI(14) at 32.8 on the last of those, down from 47.1 three sessions earlier — a fast, sector-driven compression rather than a slow bleed, since 2026-08-24 carried no AMD-specific headline. The 2026-08-14 session remains the only close above $500 in the run.
Crowding and positioning observables, stated as observables: retail-oriented technical coverage clustered on consecutive sessions (2026-08-19 and 2026-08-20 daily "what's going on" pieces); leveraged and inverse single-stock ETFs on the name (DAMD, AMDD) mechanically amplifying group moves; three consecutive sessions of Ark disclosure showing sales; scheduled insider sales clearing in the $466 to $475 band on 2026-08-20; $4.75B of paper placed on 2026-08-13 and settled 2026-08-17; and a sell-side average roughly a third above the tape with zero Sell ratings. The one thing absent from that list is an imminent company earnings date — AMD's own print is roughly 2026-11-03, outside every catalyst in the next month.
The structure that is left is a base that has not formed. Four consecutive lower weekly closes without a reclaim of $500 is a downtrend on the weekly series; RSI in the low 30s is a condition, not a signal.
Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)
- 2026-08-26 — NVIDIA Q2 FY27 results after the close. Company guided to approximately $91.0B ±2% against street consensus near $91.9B revenue and $2.08 EPS. The sector binary in the window.
- 2026-08-27 — Marvell Technology Q2 results, first print since the 2026-08-19 Google warrant agreement. Tests whether custom-ASIC demand expands alongside merchant accelerators or substitutes for them.
- 2026-08-27 to 2026-08-29 — Jackson Hole symposium. The 2026-08-18 semiconductor decline was attributed to a surge in long-end yields rather than company news.
- 2026-09-08 — Citi 2026 Global TMT Conference, AMD participating. One of two scheduled management appearances before the Q3 print.
- ~2026-09-10 (est.) — TSMC August monthly revenue. Independent volume read after July's NT$467.6B (+44.7% YoY).
- 2026-09-11 — Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference, AMD presenting. Last scheduled management platform in the window.
- ~2026-11-03 (est.) — AMD Q3 2026 results. Outside the window, and the absence is the point: no company-reported data lands for roughly ten weeks.
What Would Change Our Mind
The $500 shelf is already gone, so the question the prior note posed has been answered on the downside. What is left to break is the August range itself. A weekly close below $440 puts the tape beneath every close recorded since the 2026-08-04 print and well under the $580.91 52-week high, and would place the drawdown in the territory where a fundamental re-rating, rather than sector beta, is the more economical explanation.
The secondary condition is dated: NVIDIA reports 2026-08-26 against a ~$91.0B ±2% guide and ~$91.9B consensus. A Data Center line at or below guide with no raise to the October quarter removes the only sector datapoint available before AMD's own print, and the theme stays saturated with the marginal bid rotating to custom silicon — the direction Ark's 2026-08-17 to 2026-08-19 disclosures already show.
What would rebuild the frame instead: a weekly close back above $500, a named Helios shipment start from management at the 2026-09-08 or 2026-09-11 conferences, TSMC's August revenue holding the low-40s percent year-over-year growth pace, or a sell-side raise that lifts rather than trails the $613.09 average. None of those exists as of 2026-08-24.
Correlation Notes
The 2026-08-24 decline was a group event: Intel down 5%, AMD down 4% intraday, TSMC down 3%, with no AMD-specific catalyst and NVIDIA's print two sessions out. The 2026-08-18 semiconductor selloff was attributed to rising long-end yields. Both point to the same exposure — the name is a high-beta expression of AI-semiconductor factor risk that moves with NVDA, TSM, AVGO, memory and semi-cap rather than diversifying against them.
Within the complex, flow has been rotating rather than leaving: Ark bought NVIDIA, Broadcom and Cerebras across the same three sessions it sold AMD, and stated on 2026-08-19 that it is avoiding memory-dependent names. A separate 2026-08-24 headline had memory stocks sliding on a threatened 50% tariff on Canadian autos and steel for 2027, which is a macro channel into the group that has nothing to do with accelerator demand. Leveraged and inverse single-stock ETFs on AMD add mechanical amplification in both directions.
Notes
- 2026-04-19: MI300X / MI325 alt-compute + Xilinx FPGA; periodic re-rating catalysts
- Fiscal quarters end on a Saturday (Q1 2026 ended 2026-03-28), so period-end dates shift year to year across the filings.
- High-beta expression of the AI-semiconductor complex; carries the same factor exposure as NVDA, TSM, AVGO, memory and semi-cap rather than diversifying it.
- Leveraged and inverse single-stock ETFs trade on AMD (DAMD, AMDD), adding mechanical amplification to the tape in both directions.
- Realised earnings moves have run wide of implied: 2026-05-05 delivered +25.9% against 7.0% implied; 2026-08-04 delivered -8.8% against ~9% implied.
- CTO/EVP option exercises and sales run under a Rule 10b5-1 plan adopted 2025-11-14, so individual Form 4 sales are scheduled rather than discretionary.
- Taalas (announced 2026-08-06) has undisclosed terms and an expected Q4 2026 close subject to regulatory approval; nothing lands in FY26 results.

MU
Micron Technology, Inc.
Contract-annuity leg intact — 16 take-or-pay deals, ~$100B minimum contracted revenue to late 2030 — but on 2026-08-24 the tape found a counter-narrative: reports the White House may let Apple source DRAM from CXMT ahead of Xi's ~09-24 visit knocked MU from $966.78 to $910.43 and erased the $10B research-lab pop. Nvidia 2026-08-26 is the only in-window binary; FQ4 lands 2026-09-29.
HPE
Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company
The one green close failed: 2026-08-24 closed $52.43, undercutting the 08-20 low close of $52.89 and marking seven of eight sessions lower off the 2026-08-13 high of $59.82, with no dated HPE news since 2026-08-19. The 2026-09-02 Q3 print is the binary — screens carry ~$0.93–0.94 EPS on ~$11.97B against a $0.88–0.93 / $11.5–12.1B guide. The narrative is saturated.
MRVL
Marvell Technology, Inc.
Custom-silicon ASIC royalty story intact, but the AI-semi theme is mid-correction — chips posted their worst month vs software on record (7/17) with money rotating into energy. Buying a falling sector with no confirmed higher low is the trap; the setup needs the $250-255 May shelf to hold before re-engaging.
NTAP
NetApp, Inc.
Three sell-side targets near $210 in eleven days (Goldman 08-13, Citi 08-18, Evercore 08-24) have stopped moving the tape: $186.86 on 2026-08-24, 9.8% below the $207.08 high, RSI 46.4, with the 20-analyst average target $186.31 sitting at the price and 12 of 20 at Hold. The 2026-09-02 Q1 FY27 print is the binary. The narrative is saturated.
