How to read this

The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 9 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.

Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.

Kill line

A daily close below $180, beneath the 50-day moving average and erasing most of the rerating that followed the 4 August 2026 guidance raise. Third-quarter revenue short of the $3.3 billion guide would also break the case.

Open pick Medium conviction, opened at $204.49. Since then +6.0% against the S&P 500's +1.9% (+4.1 pp). Kill line at open: $180.00 (daily close); graded by at the latest.

The thesis

Arista Networks is turning AI data-center spending into roughly 40% revenue growth, and management raised 2026 revenue guidance to about $12.6 billion on 4 August 2026. The third-quarter report, now confirmed by the company for 3 November 2026 after the close, settles the next step. It has to show revenue at or above the $3.3 billion guide and non-GAAP gross margin holding near 63%.

The shares closed at $210.97 on 8 October 2026, 2.3% under the 52-week high of $215.83 and 16.5% above the close of three months earlier, in adjusted daily closes. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI) eased to 67.3 from 79.4 on 6 October 2026. Readings above 70 mark a stretched short-term run, so the stretch has cooled without a real pullback.

Two pieces of news arrived since the 7 October 2026 note. Arista launched an Ethernet rack-scale AI networking portfolio on 7 October 2026, and Citigroup raised its target to $248 with a Buy rating on 8 October 2026 (Benzinga). The narrative is maturing: Arista entered the S&P 100 on 21 September 2026, featured in CNBC "Final Trades" on 18 September 2026 and 21 September 2026, and was reported on 6 October 2026 as a new pick in Investor's Business Daily's SwingTrader service. The known good news is largely priced, and the November report carries the next move.

Bullish and bearish views on Arista Networks, Inc.

The bull case on Arista Networks, Inc. (ANET), in brief: Revenue beat its own guide widely. The bear case: Gross margin is shrinking.

Bull case

  • Revenue beat its own guide widely. Second-quarter 2026 revenue was $3.036 billion, up 37.7% year on year, against company guidance of about $2.8 billion (Arista 8-K, 4 August 2026).
  • Guidance rose for the quarter and year. The company guided third-quarter revenue to about $3.3 billion, non-GAAP operating margin to 48–49% and non-GAAP EPS to $1.06–$1.08 (8-K, 4 August 2026). On the same day's call it set full-year growth at 40%, or about $12.6 billion.
  • Product reach extends into scale-up networks. On 7 October 2026 Arista announced liquid-cooled Ethernet rack-scale platforms supporting up to 144 accelerators per rack, developed with AMD, Arm, Broadcom, d-Matrix, Meta, Microsoft and Qualcomm under the Ethernet for Scale-up Networks (ESUN) initiative (Arista press release). Scale-up links inside a rack have mostly run on proprietary interconnects, so this widens the market Arista can sell into.
  • Deferred revenue covers future quarters. Total deferred revenue was $6.9 billion at the end of the second quarter, $5.1 billion current and $1.8 billion non-current (8-K, 4 August 2026). It turns into revenue as customers accept shipments.
  • Analyst targets keep moving up. Citigroup raised its target to $248 on 8 October 2026 (Benzinga), and Bernstein initiated at Outperform with $250 on 30 September 2026. StockAnalysis showed an average target of $241.93 across 31 analysts on 7 October 2026, with a low of $190 and a high of $289.

Bear case

  • Gross margin is shrinking. Non-GAAP gross margin fell to 63.4% in the second quarter of 2026 from 65.6% a year earlier (8-K, 4 August 2026). Management blamed customer mix and expects memory and silicon cost pressure through 2028.
  • Insiders keep selling into strength. Trusts linked to CEO Jayshree Ullal sold $221.2 million of shares on 5 August 2026, $119.4 million on 12 August 2026 and $13.2 million on 25 September 2026 under a Rule 10b5-1 plan (Form 4 and Form 144 filings).
  • Two customers carry the business. Management expects Microsoft and Meta each to exceed 10% of revenue (4 August 2026 call). A capital-spending pause at either would hit orders directly.
  • Attention is crowded near the highs. The shares sit 2.3% under their 52-week high after a 16.5% three-month gain (adjusted closes, 8 October 2026), with S&P 100 inclusion, television stock picks and a swing-trading newsletter all landing within three weeks. Steve Eisman argued on 5 October 2026 that hyperscaler free cash flow is largely spent (Benzinga), the funding source this growth depends on.

Price setup

The close of $210.97 on 8 October 2026 sits just under the 52-week high of $215.83 in adjusted daily bars. MarketBeat put the 50-day moving average at $194.51 and the 200-day at $170.06 on 5 October 2026. The price is well above both, and both are rising.

The RSI fell from 79.4 on 6 October 2026 to 67.3 on 8 October 2026 while the price gave up little, which reads as the overbought condition cooling through time more than through price. The prior-note reference of $180 lies below the 50-day average and below most of the rerating that followed the 4 August 2026 guidance raise. A close there would mean the market had stopped paying for the raised outlook before the report confirmed it.

Catalysts, next 30 days

  • 12 October to 15 October 2026 — OCP Global Summit, San Jose. Arista exhibits; demonstrations of the 1.6-terabit and rack-scale platforms bear on whether next-generation shipments land on schedule in 2027.
  • ~28 October 2026, est. Microsoft and Meta quarterly reports. Their capital-spending guidance is the nearest read on demand from Arista's two largest customers.
  • 3 November 2026 — Arista third-quarter 2026 results, after the close; call at 4:30 p.m. ET. The company confirmed the date on 6 October 2026. Revenue against the $3.3 billion guide, gross margin against 63.4%, and any change to the roughly $12.6 billion full-year guide decide the case.

What would change the view

The case breaks if third-quarter revenue falls short of the $3.3 billion guide, or if the company holds the full-year guide while gross margin drops well under 63%. A cut in capital-spending guidance from Microsoft or Meta in late October would weaken it before Arista reports. On price, a daily close below $180 would put the shares under the 50-day moving average and erase most of the post-guidance rerating. A further run of insider Form 144 filings while the RSI climbs back above 70 would point to a crowded top forming ahead of the report.

What it trades with

Arista trades with AI infrastructure suppliers whose revenue depends on hyperscaler capital spending: Nvidia, Broadcom and optical-component makers. CNBC panels paired it with Broadcom and Cisco on 18 September 2026 and 21 September 2026. Broadcom is also a partner in the 7 October 2026 rack-scale launch and supplies switching silicon, so a Broadcom networking miss would likely hit both names. Microsoft and Meta earnings act as a shared factor across the group, and S&P 100 membership since 21 September 2026 ties part of the trading flow to large-cap index funds.

Notes

  • CEO Jayshree Ullal's share sales run through trusts under a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan adopted on 14 November 2025, so Form 4 and Form 144 filings recur on a schedule.
  • Microsoft and Meta are each expected to be customers above 10% of revenue, so a capital-spending change at either moves Arista's results.
  • Management says it can see demand only about two quarters ahead, and customer acceptance clauses make deferred revenue swing between quarters.
  • Arista joined the S&P 100 on 21 September 2026, so index-fund rebalancing adds to trading flows in the shares.
