Resolved Graded and closed 2026-05-15 at medium conviction — the published kill line fired. Coverage continued after the close; the read below is dated 2026-08-25 and is not part of the scored record. Research has since re-rated the name low; the record keeps the graded tier.
Current thesis
Copper-to-optical interconnect narrative intact as a business (bookings into 2028, ~$1.9B NVDA stake) but the positioning trade is in distribution — ~35% off the 2026-06-02 ATH after correlated basket flushes. Week-of-7/21 semi rebound is a bounce, not a confirmed reclaim of the broken $404.94 shelf. The 2026-08-12 Q4 FY26 print is the next binary; the setup needs a volume-confirmed base.
Kill line
A weekly close below $265 breaks the July shelf that has held since the 2026-07-17 flush ($276.96) and opens the unfilled gap toward the pre-June base; secondary confirmation is the 2026-08-12 Q4 FY26 print guiding FY27 datacom below the $1.91-2.05B Q4 run-rate, converting a multiple reset into an estimate reset.

Current Thesis
The floor that had absorbed two separate liquidations gave way. The adjusted close of $275.49 on 2026-08-24 is the first daily close under the 2026-07-17 flush close of $276.96, which had contained both the July washout and the 2026-08-19 low close of $287.47. Price sits 35.5% under the 2026-06-02 high of $426.89, RSI(14) at 41.3, with a three-month price change of −27.8%. The 2026-08-12 post-print close of $355.64 remains untouched overhead.
The move had no company source. Applied Optoelectronics disclosed a $600M at-the-market equity offering after the 2026-08-21 close — Raymond James and Needham named, proceeds for debt repayment, working capital and capital expenditure. On 2026-08-24 AAOI traded down 12% to $109.94, Lumentum down 5% to $822.69, Coherent down 5% to $273.68 intraday. A peer funding its build by printing stock into a group that had doubled is new paper landing on a bid that has been thinning since June.
The narrative is saturated, unchanged from the prior update and now sitting on its lower boundary. What dates it: record FY26 results on 2026-08-12 and six price-target raises on 2026-08-13 bought a single session before a full round-trip by 2026-08-19; Roundhill's LYTE photonics ETF listed 2026-08-06, which is vehicle creation following recognition; Benzinga ran a 20-year retrospective-return piece on 2026-08-18 citing a $59.99B market capitalisation, a coverage genre that clusters late. The label is not dead because the operating line is still accelerating and the guide still steps up off a beat. What the 2026-08-24 session removed is the structural argument that was carrying that distinction. The 2026-08-26 Nvidia print reprices the whole complex.
Bullish and bearish views on Coherent Corp.
The model's bull view on Coherent Corp. (COHR), in brief: Datacom accelerated in rate and mix. Q4 FY26 Datacenter & Communications revenue $1.615B, +59% YoY and 79% of the quarter, against $1.36B / +41% / 75% in Q3 FY26 (releases 2026-08-12 and 2026-05-06). The guide steps up off a beat. Q1 FY27 revenue guided $2.200–2.400B against… The bear view: The best quarter in company history was surrendered in five sessions, and then the shelf went too. Both cases follow in full.
Bull Case
- Datacom accelerated in rate and mix. Q4 FY26 Datacenter & Communications revenue $1.615B, +59% YoY and 79% of the quarter, against $1.36B / +41% / 75% in Q3 FY26 (releases 2026-08-12 and 2026-05-06).
- The guide steps up off a beat. Q1 FY27 revenue guided $2.200–2.400B against $2.135B consensus, non-GAAP EPS $1.85–2.05 against $1.77, delivered on top of Q4's $2.046B and $1.74 (2026-08-12 release).
- Margin compounding is nine quarters deep. Q4 FY26 non-GAAP gross margin 40.2%, the eighth expansion in nine quarters; FY26 non-GAAP operating margin 20.5% versus 17.8% in FY25; FY26 non-GAAP EPS $5.61 versus $3.53.
- Management attached dates to the ramp. On the 2026-08-12 call: exceeding $3B in quarterly revenue by the end of fiscal 2027, record bookings extending into calendar 2028, 6-inch indium phosphide capacity doubling ahead of plan.
- A second demand pool opened 2026-08-17. Customer sampling of 300mm high-thermal-conductivity silicon carbide substrates to AI semiconductor partners, claimed at up to 25% better heat spreading than current solutions — revenue that does not depend on transceiver attach rates.
- Volume corroboration downstream. Fabrinet FQ4 FY26 revenue $1,315.8M against $909.7M a year earlier, FQ1 FY27 guided to $1.375–1.425B (2026-08-17 release). Units are not the constraint in this cycle.
- R&D funded at scale. FY26 R&D of $723M and a $50M preliminary CHIPS Act memorandum, disclosed in the 10-K filed 2026-08-14.
Bear Case
- The best quarter in company history was surrendered in five sessions, and then the shelf went too. $355.64 on 2026-08-12 → $287.47 on 2026-08-19 → $275.49 on 2026-08-24. The 2026-08-13 raises (Rosenblatt $500, Needham $420, Jefferies $420, Morgan Stanley $375, B. Riley $345, Northland $280) did not hold a bid for a week.
- Peer capital-raising is now a live supply channel. AAOI's $600M ATM disclosed after the 2026-08-21 close cost Coherent 5% on 2026-08-24 with no Coherent-specific news attached. Groups that fund capacity with equity re-rate downward together.
- The group is being marked on gross margin rather than revenue. Fabrinet's FQ4 non-GAAP gross margin of 12.2% against 12.5% a year earlier triggered a 9.1% pre-market decline on 2026-08-18 and a broad optics selloff, on a 45% revenue increase.
- Cash conversion has not arrived. FY26 operating cash flow $79.5M against $1.103B of capital expenditure; Q4 capex $556M versus $290M in Q3, with a further sequential increase planned for Q1 FY27. Long-term debt $3.214B, inventories $2.581B.
- Sell-side positioning is one-sided into a broken chart. 17 buys and zero sells; the consensus target compiled by Yahoo Finance stood at $416.09 heading into the 2026-08-24 session, roughly 51% above the close. Revision risk points one way.
- Concentration is disclosed, not inferred. The FY26 10-K states two customers each contributed more than 10% of revenue. Industrial fell sequentially to $430.5M while Datacenter & Communications reached 79% of Q4.
- Ownership structure amplifies factor moves. The register is 85.60% institutional against 0.28% insider ownership, and the 30-year Treasury yield set a fresh 19-year peak on 2026-08-17 — the same week long-duration growth names underperformed.
Setup & Price Structure
The reference structure is simple and now negative. $276.96 (2026-07-17) was the closing low that held through two flushes; it was lost on 2026-08-24 at $275.49. Above, the first supply band is $287.47–$290.03, the 2026-08-19 to 2026-08-20 closes, and beyond that the unrecovered $355.64 from the print. Below, the next defined shelf is the pre-June base, and the gap left on the June advance is unfilled.
RSI(14) at 41.3 is not oversold. The break happened with momentum mid-range, which means the flush-and-reclaim pattern that worked in July has not been set up here. No base has formed; the sessions that would define one have not printed.
Crowding and positioning observables, stated as observables: sell-side is 17 buys / zero sells with a compiled consensus target of $416.09 against a $275.49 close; institutional ownership is 85.60% versus 0.28% insider; CFO Sherri Luther filed Form 4 sales of 3,000 shares on 2026-08-18 at $324.00 and 1,000 shares on 2026-07-22 at $306.68, both under a Rule 10b5-1 plan adopted 2025-11-13, leaving 64,475 shares directly held; a dedicated photonics ETF (LYTE) began trading 2026-08-06; a peer issued $600M of equity into the tape after the 2026-08-21 close; retrospective-return coverage appeared 2026-08-18; and a sector-defining earnings event lands 2026-08-26.
Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)
- 2026-08-26 — Nvidia Q2 FY27 results for the quarter ended 2026-07-26, after the close; call 2:00pm PT, results posted around 1:20pm PT. Company guidance was approximately $91.0B revenue; preview compilations dated 2026-08-19 put consensus near $91.7B and about $2.08 non-GAAP EPS.
- 2026-09-03 — Ciena fiscal Q3 2026 results before the US open, call 8:30am ET (company-confirmed).
- ~2026-09 (est.) — FCC September open meeting and the release of its tentative agenda; whether a transceiver item appears.
- Beyond the window: ~2026-11 (est.) — Coherent Q1 FY27 results for the September 2026 quarter, the first grade of the $2.200–2.400B guide.
What Would Change Our Mind
The structure has already given way once. $276.96 was the level separating a shakeout from a trend break, and 2026-08-24 closed under it at $275.49 with no company-specific cause attached. The open question is whether that resolves as a one-session overshoot driven by a peer's share issuance or as the start of the next leg down. A weekly close below $265 settles it against the bull case: that level sits under every closing low since the June top, and losing it opens the unfilled June gap toward the pre-June base. A secondary confirmation would be Nvidia printing at or above the ~$91.7B consensus on 2026-08-26 and the optical complex still failing to hold a bid the following session, which would locate the problem in ownership and flow rather than end demand.
The converse would move the read back up: a weekly close reclaiming the $287.47–$290.03 band on expanding volume, followed by Ciena's 2026-09-03 print showing stable or improving gross margin. That combination would establish the Fabrinet 12.2% margin figure as assembly-model-specific rather than an industry read.
A move to dead requires the operating line to break, not the price — Q1 FY27 revenue guided below the $2.046B delivered in Q4, or management walking back the $3B quarterly target dated to end-FY27.
Correlation Notes
- Nvidia transmits through two channels. It is a large commercial counterparty and, since its 2026-03-02 $2B investment, holder of roughly a $1.9B equity stake. NVDA headlines move the name twice.
- Fabrinet is the volume and margin proxy. Its FQ4 release on 2026-08-17 set the group's direction for the following week; its FQ1 FY27 guide of $1.375–1.425B is the near-term unit check.
- The basket now moves on capital-raising as well as fundamentals. The 2026-08-24 sequence — AAOI −12%, LITE −5%, COHR −5% on an ATM disclosure — shows correlation running through funding needs across the group.
- Long-duration rate sensitivity. The 30-year Treasury yield's 19-year peak on 2026-08-17 coincided with the sharpest optics de-rating of the month.
- China exposure is manufacturing-origin, not domicile. China was 11.71% of FY25 revenue and Coherent operates a networking plant in Fuzhou; an FCC or Commerce rule written on where a device is made cuts differently than one written on who owns the maker.
Notes
- Fiscal year ends 30 June. The 2026-08-12 report closed FY26, so Q1 FY27 is the September 2026 quarter and reports in November.
- Nvidia is both a large commercial counterparty and an equity holder after its 2026-03-02 $2B investment, so NVDA headlines transmit through two channels.
- CFO share sales are executed under a Rule 10b5-1 plan adopted 2025-11-13, so individual sale dates are pre-scheduled rather than discretionary.
- China was 11.71% of FY25 revenue and Coherent runs a networking plant in Fuzhou; rules written on manufacturing origin rather than corporate domicile cut both ways.
- The register is 85.60% institutional against 0.28% insider ownership, so index and factor de-risking moves the name disproportionately.
- Published consensus varies by vendor, so the same print gets reported as a different-sized beat depending on the compiler.

UMC
United Microelectronic Corp.
Silicon-photonics pivot re-rated the ADR ~3x, but the July blowoff to $28.96 round-tripped -26% to $21.25 in days while sell-side finally upgraded (Macquarie Outperform 2026-07-14) — late-stage distribution behaviour. The 2026-07-29 Q2 print is now the binary that decides whether the leg resumes or the re-rate unwinds.
WDC
Western Digital Corporation
The 29% bounce off the 2026-07-28 low stalled: WDC closed $527.22 on 2026-08-03, −3.23% on a day its sector rose 0.58%, back under a rising 50-day at $562.65. Consensus (~$3.69B / $3.31–$3.35) still sits above the company's own $3.65B ±$100M / $3.25 ±$0.15 guide, so the 2026-08-05 print — 16.8% implied — is the binary.
AAOI
Applied Optoelectronics, Inc.
The $110 shelf that defined the August leg is gone: the 2026-08-24 close of $107.63 fully unwinds the 2026-08-04 policy gap (pre-gap close $110.21), three sessions after a second $600,000,000 ATM was filed on 2026-08-21. Q2 revenue +86% YoY and a 115%–144% Q3 growth guide are intact, but the equity narrative is late-cycle with no company-controlled catalyst before Q3 (~2026-11-05). The narrative is saturated.
LITE
Lumentum Holdings Inc.
Optical-content-per-rack leg intact, but the cohort just repriced on a peer's dilution rather than on anything Lumentum said: the 2026-08-24 close of $830.17 sits 1.2% over the 2026-08-11 shelf at $820.59 after Applied Optoelectronics' $600M ATM took 5% out of the name. Nvidia's 2026-08-26 print after the close is the borrowed binary; no company-reported number until early November.
