Against its published line

The red mark is the published kill line. The dot is where the name closed on 24 August 2026. Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so the first two points of cushion take half the track and a name sitting on its line is legible; past 8% a name reads simply as well clear. A trigger written on weekly closes is graded on weekly closes, so a name trading through such a line mid-week reads as pending, not hit.

Current thesis

The $110 shelf that defined the August leg is gone: the 2026-08-24 close of $107.63 fully unwinds the 2026-08-04 policy gap (pre-gap close $110.21), three sessions after a second $600,000,000 ATM was filed on 2026-08-21. Q2 revenue +86% YoY and a 115%–144% Q3 growth guide are intact, but the equity narrative is late-cycle with no company-controlled catalyst before Q3 (~2026-11-05). The narrative is saturated.

Kill line

A weekly close below $104 takes out the 2026-08-24 intraday low of $104.50 and leaves no part of the August advance intact. Secondary: the FCC September open-meeting tentative agenda (~2026-09-03) publishing with no transceiver-import item, which removes the policy option entirely.

Latest analysis and events for AAOI —

As of 25 August 2026, the latest FrontierPicks analysis for Applied Optoelectronics, Inc. (AAOI): 14 May 2026: $600M ATM equity distribution via Raymond James/Needham — structural supply ceiling. Track 424B/8-K for actual takedowns; accelerated issuance = management monetizing the mania, a late-cycle tell.

Current Thesis

The level that defined the August advance is gone. The adjusted daily series closed at $107.63 on 2026-08-24, below the $110.21 close that immediately preceded the 2026-08-04 Reuters report on a drafted FCC measure barring imports of new-model Chinese optical transceivers. That gap — the event that carried the shares from a $110 handle to a $150.28 closing high on 2026-08-14 — is fully unwound, and the proximate cause was a supply disclosure rather than a demand datapoint. An 8-K and prospectus supplement dated 2026-08-21 established a second $600,000,000 at-the-market equity distribution agreement with Raymond James & Associates and Needham & Company at 2% commission, under the same automatic shelf (Form S-3ASR No. 333-283905) that carried an identical program dated 2026-05-14. Intraday on 2026-08-24, TheFly flagged the shares down 16.3% at $104.50 and later down 11.7% at $110.16.

What is left to buy is the operating ramp standing alone: Q2 FY26 revenue of $191.922M, up 86% year on year, against $190.478M consensus, and a Q3 guide of $255.000M–$290.000M that the company framed as 115%–144% growth. The policy leg that produced the August advance still has no proceeding number, no draft text and no comment deadline as of 2026-08-25; trade coverage continues to source it to Reuters' four people familiar with the plans.

The narrative is saturated. What dates it — Fabrinet's beat-and-raise on 2026-08-17 was sold 19.4% the next session while the Nasdaq Composite lost 1.4%; management registered a second $600M of equity 99 days after the first, with the shares already 44.1% below the $223.1 high on the filing date; a leveraged inverse product (Tradr 2X Short AAOI Daily, ticker AAOZ) has traded against a float near 80M shares since 2026-07-15; and no company-controlled event lands before the Q3 print (~2026-11-05).

Bullish and bearish views on Applied Optoelectronics, Inc.

The model's bull view on Applied Optoelectronics, Inc. (AAOI), in brief: 2026-08-06 (Q2 FY26): revenue $191.922M versus $190.478M consensus, a fifth consecutive record quarter; datacenter revenue $107.662M against $81.4M in Q1 FY26; non-GAAP EPS $0.06 against roughly $0.01 expected; non-GAAP gross margin 29.8%. The bear view: 2026-08-21: the second $600,000,000 ATM was authorized without disclosing how much capacity remained under the 2026-05-14 program of identical size and identical agents. Both cases follow in full.

Bull Case

  • 2026-08-06 (Q2 FY26): revenue $191.922M versus $190.478M consensus, a fifth consecutive record quarter; datacenter revenue $107.662M against $81.4M in Q1 FY26; non-GAAP EPS $0.06 against roughly $0.01 expected; non-GAAP gross margin 29.8%.
  • 2026-08-06 guide: Q3 revenue $255.000M–$290.000M versus $278.270M consensus, non-GAAP net income $10.1M–$24.0M. CEO Thompson Lin stated on the call that demand outpaces production capacity through mid-2027, with roughly 650,000 pieces per month of combined 800G and 1.6T targeted by end-2026.
  • 2026-08-18, Rosenblatt summit (per Investing.com transcript coverage): CFO and Chief Strategy Officer Stefan Murry described output above 200,000 transceivers per month, roughly 100,000 units per automated line, 1.6T revenue of $70–80M in Q4, a $200M 1.6T order from a single customer, and a gross-margin goal near 40% by end-2027. Conference remarks, not restated in an 8-K.
  • 2026-07-14: construction began on nearly 400,000 square feet across two adjacent Pearland, Texas properties, reported as a roughly $300M expansion supporting up to 700,000 high-speed transceivers per month once fully operational by end-2027.
  • 2026-08-04, Reuters: the FCC is drafting a measure barring U.S. imports of new-model Chinese optical transceivers, with existing models exempted; TrendForce put Chinese-headquartered suppliers near 56% of global optical-module capacity on 2026-08-05.
  • 2026-08-25: stockanalysis.com's compiled consensus rating was Buy with a consensus target of $163.40, above the last close. Needham maintained Buy and lowered its target to $190 on 2026-08-07; Rosenblatt carried Buy at $220 on the same date; B. Riley's Neutral mark of $109 (raised from $94) sits closest to the tape.

Bear Case

  • 2026-08-21: the second $600,000,000 ATM was authorized without disclosing how much capacity remained under the 2026-05-14 program of identical size and identical agents. Combined registered capacity across the two agreements is $1.2B against a market capitalisation of $9.14B reported on 2026-08-25.
  • Q2 FY26 cash flow: $645.76M of issuance proceeds against $11.57M of operating cash flow, with cash of $508.758M at 2026-06-30. The equity, not the business, has funded the expansion so far.
  • 2026-08-06 guide, earnings line: the Q3 non-GAAP EPS range of $0.11–$0.26 sits entirely below the $0.28 consensus, so guided revenue growth of 115%–144% is not reaching EPS at modelled rates.
  • 2026-06-30 balance sheet: Digicomm International, on disclosed longer-than-typical payment terms, was $211.0M of $314.009M of accounts receivable. Three customers were 43%, 26% and 24% of first-half FY26 revenue.
  • 2026-08-17/18: Fabrinet reported fiscal Q4 revenue of $1.32B, roughly $40M above consensus, guided fiscal Q1 2027 to $1.375–1.425B, and printed adjusted gross margin of 12.2% versus 12.5% a year earlier. The shares fell 19.4% on 2026-08-18 — a beat sold on margin, inside the same supply chain.
  • 2026-08-25: the FCC measure remains anonymously sourced. No docket item, no draft text, no Federal Register notice with an effective date.

Setup & Price Structure

The August sequence, in adjusted closes: a rejection at $149.35 on 2026-08-07, the leg high of $150.28 on 2026-08-14 on 18,774,825 shares, $129.23 on 2026-08-20 (a one-session reclaim of the $128.51 gap shelf), $124.82 on 2026-08-21 back beneath it, and $107.63 on 2026-08-24. The last close is 51.8% below the $223.1 fifty-two-week high, with a three-month price change of -39.4% and RSI(14) at 40.1 — down from 55.8 three sessions earlier, and still short of a washed-out reading.

Positioning and crowding observables, stated as observables: short interest was last reported at 9.94M shares at 0.89 days to cover, down from 10.76M in late July, so the decline has not been carried by a visible short book. Reported beta is 3.69, and a 2x daily inverse ETF on the single name has existed since 2026-07-15 against a float near 80M shares. Insider supply runs under a 10b5-1 plan adopted 2026-03-19 by the SVP and Asia General Manager, meaning sale dates are pre-scheduled rather than discretionary. Corporate supply is the larger number: a second $600M takedown authorization filed into a tape already 44% off its high. Retail-facing coverage clustered heavily — Benzinga movers lists carried the name on 2026-08-14, 2026-08-21 and twice on 2026-08-24 (pre-market and intraday).

Shares outstanding reported on stockanalysis.com's quote page moved from 84.57M on 2026-08-21 to 84.91M on 2026-08-25. Provider share counts refresh on filings and that difference is not by itself evidence of a takedown; only a 424B5, an 8-K or the Q3 cash-flow statement establishes one.

Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)

  • ~2026-08-26 (est.) — FINRA short-interest report covering the 2026-08-14 settlement date.
  • ~2026-08-26 (est.) — Nvidia's quarterly report. Benzinga's 2026-08-24 futures wrap previewed it for the week of 2026-08-24 alongside Jackson Hole; the exact date is not confirmed here. Sets the tape for AI-interconnect names ahead of any company-specific input.
  • ~2026-09-03 (est.) — release of the FCC September open-meeting tentative agenda. The August agenda, released 2026-07-31, carried no transceiver-import item.
  • ~2026-09-11 (est.) — FINRA short-interest report covering the 2026-08-31 settlement date. First reading that spans the ATM filing and the break through the pre-gap shelf.
  • Beyond the 30-day window: ~2026-11-05 (est.) Q3 FY26 print, and ~2026-12-31 (est.) any Federal Register publication of an FCC transceiver measure with an effective date.

Elapsed catalysts

  • Rolling from 2026-08-21 — 424B5 pricing supplements or 8-Ks disclosing actual takedowns under either $600,000,000 program. Authorization is not issuance; a takedown is. (passed 5d ago)

What Would Change Our Mind

The structure that mattered is already lost: the 2026-08-04 policy gap is filled, the $128.51 shelf failed on the one session it was reclaimed, and the 2026-08-24 close of $107.63 sits under the $110.21 pre-gap reference. The next gradeable break is a weekly close below $104, which would take out the 2026-08-24 intraday low of $104.50 and leave no part of the August advance standing; that would date the label change from saturated to dead.

Three things would argue the other way, each observable. A 424B5 or 8-K showing the two ATM programs going largely unused into Q3 would remove the dilution overhang that produced the 2026-08-21 and 2026-08-24 selling. An FCC September tentative agenda carrying a transceiver-import item would convert anonymous sourcing into procedure for the first time since 2026-08-04. And a Q3 print at or above the $290M high end with gross margin above the guided 29% floor would show the ramp converting, against a Q2 that produced $11.57M of operating cash flow.

The symmetric failure is the FCC agenda publishing clean on ~2026-09-03 with no item, which leaves the name priced purely on a guide whose EPS range already sits below consensus.

Correlation Notes

The name trades with the optical/AI-interconnect complex and amplifies it: reported beta 3.69. The clearest recent read-through was Fabrinet, whose FQ4 beat-and-raise on 2026-08-17 was met with a 19.4% decline on 2026-08-18 on 12.2% adjusted gross margin against 12.5% a year earlier, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 1.4% — the market marking optical margin rather than optical revenue.

Macro coupling was live in the same window: Benzinga's 2026-08-18 wrap attributed the chip selloff to bond yields with Brent at $91. On 2026-08-24 the name appeared in the same pre-market movers list as SanDisk and Seagate as memory and storage sold on reported 2027 tariff threats, so a company-specific dilution event landed inside a weak hardware tape. Nvidia's report, previewed for the week of 2026-08-24, is the nearest exogenous driver of the whole interconnect group before any AAOI-controlled disclosure.

The policy leg correlates with nothing tradable until it is docketed; it is a headline-driven overlay on a supply chain where TrendForce put Chinese-headquartered suppliers near 56% of global optical-module capacity as of 2026-08-05.

Notes

  • 2026-04-18: seed: Serenity/attention list
  • 2026-05-14: $600M ATM equity distribution via Raymond James/Needham — structural supply ceiling. Track 424B/8-K for actual takedowns; accelerated issuance = management monetizing the mania, a late-cycle tell.
  • Two $600,000,000 at-the-market programs (Raymond James/Needham) sit under one automatic shelf, Form S-3ASR No. 333-283905, filed 2026-05-14 and 2026-08-21.
  • Neither ATM filing discloses remaining capacity under the May program; actual takedowns surface only in 424B5s, 8-Ks and the cash-flow statement.
  • Digicomm International, on disclosed longer-than-typical payment terms, was $211.0M of $314.009M of accounts receivable at 2026-06-30.
  • $124.9M principal of 2.75% convertible senior notes due 2030-01-15 and an Amazon-subsidiary customer warrant sit outside the basic share count.
  • Reported beta is 3.69; the Tradr 2X Short AAOI Daily ETF (AAOZ) has traded since 2026-07-15 against a float near 80M shares.
  • Sales by the SVP and Asia General Manager run under a 10b5-1 plan adopted 2026-03-19, so individual sale dates are pre-scheduled.

Silicon-photonics pivot re-rated the ADR ~3x, but the July blowoff to $28.96 round-tripped -26% to $21.25 in days while sell-side finally upgraded (Macquarie Outperform 2026-07-14) — late-stage distribution behaviour. The 2026-07-29 Q2 print is now the binary that decides whether the leg resumes or the re-rate unwinds.

WDC

Western Digital Corporation

The 29% bounce off the 2026-07-28 low stalled: WDC closed $527.22 on 2026-08-03, −3.23% on a day its sector rose 0.58%, back under a rising 50-day at $562.65. Consensus (~$3.69B / $3.31–$3.35) still sits above the company's own $3.65B ±$100M / $3.25 ±$0.15 guide, so the 2026-08-05 print — 16.8% implied — is the binary.

Optical-content-per-rack leg intact, but the cohort just repriced on a peer's dilution rather than on anything Lumentum said: the 2026-08-24 close of $830.17 sits 1.2% over the 2026-08-11 shelf at $820.59 after Applied Optoelectronics' $600M ATM took 5% out of the name. Copper-to-optical interconnect narrative intact as a business (bookings into 2028, ~$1.9B NVDA stake) but the positioning trade is in distribution — ~35% off the 2026-06-02 ATH after correlated basket flushes. Week-of-7/21 semi rebound is a bounce, not a confirmed reclaim of the broken $404.94 shelf. The 2026-08-12 Q4 FY26 print is the next binary; the setup needs a volume-confirmed base.
