Against its published line
The red mark is the published kill line. The dot is where the name closed on 24 August 2026. Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so the first two points of cushion take half the track and a name sitting on its line is legible; past 8% a name reads simply as well clear. A trigger written on weekly closes is graded on weekly closes, so a name trading through such a line mid-week reads as pending, not hit.
Current thesis
Optical-content-per-rack leg intact, but the cohort just repriced on a peer's dilution rather than on anything Lumentum said: the 2026-08-24 close of $830.17 sits 1.2% over the 2026-08-11 shelf at $820.59 after Applied Optoelectronics' $600M ATM took 5% out of the name. Nvidia's 2026-08-26 print after the close is the borrowed binary; no company-reported number until early November.
Kill line
A weekly close below $820 loses the 2026-08-11 pre-print shelf at $820.59, which held closing tests on 08-19, 08-20 and again on 08-24; secondary condition is the 2026-08-26 Nvidia call passing with no 2027 networking-content detail, leaving no priced event until the early-November FQ1 print.

Current Thesis
One session changed the structure and none of it came from Lumentum. The adjusted daily series closes 2026-08-24 at $830.17, down from $866.71 on 08-21 — a 4.2% drop, 21.2% under the $1053.09 high, RSI(14) at 48.6, and a three-month price change of -8.9%. The driver was a peer's balance sheet. Applied Optoelectronics filed a $600M at-the-market equity program after the 08-21 close, with Raymond James and Needham as agents, proceeds earmarked for general corporate purposes, debt repayment, working capital and capex. By 9:22 a.m. EDT Monday, AAOI traded down 12% to $109.94, LITE at $822.69, Coherent down 5% to $273.68, Corning down 3% to $145.90 and SOXX down 2% to $511.95 (24/7 Wall St., 2026-08-24).
The distribution of that damage is the useful part. A 12% hit to the issuer, roughly 5% to the two module names that did not issue, 2% to the broad semi ETF: the dilution scare stayed inside the optical corner and did not spread to the semiconductor tape. Year to date through the 08-21 close, the same source has AAOI +258%, COHR +234%, LITE +135% — a cohort where at least one member is now funding capacity by selling equity into a triple.
The binary is one session out. Nvidia reports FQ2 FY27 after the close on 2026-08-26, with forty analysts compiled at $91.85B revenue and $2.08 EPS against company guidance of $91.0B ±2%. Lumentum management takes the Deutsche Bank Technology Conference stage in Dana Point the following morning, 2026-08-27 at 10:45 a.m. PT. There is no Lumentum-reported number between now and early November.
The narrative is saturated, dated 2026-08-18, unchanged and now better evidenced. A cohort that sells off 5% on a peer's financing announcement, after Benzinga's 2026-08-20 backward-looking five-year-return piece, is trading on flow and supply of paper rather than on new demand information.
Bullish and bearish views on Lumentum Holdings Inc.
The model's bull view on Lumentum Holdings Inc. (LITE), in brief: FQ1 FY27 guidance, 2026-08-11: revenue $1.225–1.275B and non-GAAP diluted EPS $4.05–4.35 against compiled $1.159B and $3.61, with non-GAAP operating margin guided 39.5–40.5%. The bear view: Insider supply is one-directional. Form 4 filings show sales on three of the four sessions from 2026-08-18 to 08-21: Jae Kim 1,366 shares and Vincent Retort 3,183 at $909.43 on 08-18; Kim 1,904, Retort 2,483 and Wupen Yuen 1,500 at $827.82 on 08-20; Yuen 500 at $898.15 on 08-21.… Both cases follow in full.
Bull Case
- FQ1 FY27 guidance, 2026-08-11: revenue $1.225–1.275B and non-GAAP diluted EPS $4.05–4.35 against compiled $1.159B and $3.61, with non-GAAP operating margin guided 39.5–40.5%. Management framed the $1.25B midpoint as reaching the stated target model roughly three months early.
- FQ4 revenue $1.01B, +109% YoY versus $987.7M consensus; adjusted EPS $3.23. FY2026 revenue $3.014B, +83.2%; non-GAAP net income $782.3M against $146.4M in FY25 (results 8-K accepted 2026-08-11).
- Cash conversion inflected: FY2026 operating cash flow $751.4M less $451.3M capex leaves $300.1M free cash flow, against negative $104.7M in FY2025. The FY2026 10-K for the year ended 2026-06-27 sits on EDGAR under accession 0001628280-26-057358.
- Upstream supply is contracted, not spot: AXT's 2026-07-29 Form 8-K discloses $87M of Lumentum deposits against a minimum annual indium phosphide volume commitment running to 2031-12-31, credited against shipments, first $43.5M due within thirty business days.
- The 08-24 selloff carried a demand quote inside it. AAOI management, in the same disclosure that triggered the drop, said forecast demand continues to outpace production capacity through mid-2027, and cited $565.5M of Q2 capital investment. Capacity-constrained is the opposite complaint from order-constrained.
- A second Western supplier corroborated the line: Coherent's quarter ended 2026-06-30, reported 2026-08-12, showed revenue $2.05B, non-GAAP gross margin 40.2% and non-GAAP EPS $1.74 against roughly $1.98B and $1.43 cited pre-print.
Bear Case
- Insider supply is one-directional. Form 4 filings show sales on three of the four sessions from 2026-08-18 to 08-21: Jae Kim 1,366 shares and Vincent Retort 3,183 at $909.43 on 08-18; Kim 1,904, Retort 2,483 and Wupen Yuen 1,500 at $827.82 on 08-20; Yuen 500 at $898.15 on 08-21. A MarketBeat compile retrieved 2026-08-24 shows 11 sellers and zero buyers over twelve months, $95.60M gross.
- A top-20 holder left. Benzinga reported 2026-08-14 that Tiger Global Management sold its Lumentum holding, against institutional ownership of 98.15% recorded 2026-08-05 — the marginal bid in this name is a cohort of large holders, and one of them is gone.
- The target gap is wide and the compilers disagree about how wide. An S&P Global compile across 24 analysts carried an average of $1,148 (low $820, high $1,400) as of 2026-08-17; MarketBeat's compiled figure retrieved 2026-08-25 is $1,044.67. Either way the tape at $830.17 is far below both, and the last dated actions — JPMorgan $1,280, Citi $1,200, Morgan Stanley Equal-Weight $1,000, TD Cowen Hold $820 — were all set before the 08-18 to 08-24 drawdown.
- Equity issuance into cohort strength has begun. AAOI's $600M ATM follows a prior program under which it says it already raised $538.8M net. Optical capacity is being financed with paper, and the market marked the whole group down for it.
- Trailing screens are unusable. The FY26 GAAP loss of $6.9B is driven by a $7.8B non-cash convert-equitization charge; published trailing P/E figures near the 145.91x cited 2026-08-10 do not describe the operating business.
Setup & Price Structure
The relevant closes, in order: $1053.09 on 2026-05-11 (the highest close in the series per MacroTrends); $968.90 on 2026-08-17, the post-print high-water mark; $866.71 on 08-21; $830.17 on 08-24. The floor under all of it is the 2026-08-11 pre-print close of $820.59, which has now absorbed closing tests on 08-19, 08-20 and 08-24, and which the 08-24 morning tape probed at $822.69 before the close settled 1.2% above it.
RSI(14) at 48.6 is neither stretched nor washed out — it has fallen from 56.2 a session earlier without reaching the sub-30 zone that would mark capitulation. The 21.2% distance from the 52-week high means the name is well below any rising short-term average rather than extended above one; the crowding evidence here is not price extension, it is the ownership structure (98.15% institutional, short interest 8.78M shares or 11.38% of float at 1.76 days to cover as of 2026-08-05) and the insider and peer-issuance supply landing into it. Beta of 1.51 means broad-tape stress arrives amplified.
A base has not formed. Three closing defences of the same shelf inside four sessions, with a binary event scheduled inside that window, describes a level under active test rather than a level that has held.
Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)
- 2026-08-26 — Nvidia FQ2 FY27 results after the close, quarter ended 2026-07-26. Forty analysts compiled at $91.85B revenue and $2.08 EPS versus company guidance of $91.0B ±2%. Nvidia also holds the roughly $2B Lumentum stake its CEO confirmed on 2026-07-21.

What Would Change Our Mind
The structure that matters is the 2026-08-11 shelf at $820.59, defended on three closes since 08-19 and probed intraday at $822.69 on 08-24. A weekly close below $820 removes it, and with the next company-reported number roughly ten weeks out there is no scheduled event to re-anchor the name beneath it.
Second, the 2026-08-26 Nvidia call can come and go without resolving anything. If the commentary stays on compute and supply and offers no 2027 networking or rack-interconnect content detail, and LITE, COHR and FN close lower on 08-27 on an in-line or better Nvidia number, the borrowed catalyst has been spent for nothing.
Third, the AXT deposit. If the initial $43.5M is not paid inside the thirty-business-day window ending around 2026-09-09, or the agreement is renegotiated, the strongest non-guidance evidence of contracted 2027 indium phosphide volume weakens.
On the other side: a reclaim of $968.90 on a weekly close, with the five September investor appearances producing an upward revision to 800G/1.6T mix commentary, would argue the 08-18 to 08-24 drawdown was a cohort financing event and the saturated label is early.
Correlation Notes
The 2026-08-24 session is a clean read on what LITE actually trades with. AAOI's ATM moved the issuer 12%, Lumentum and Coherent about 5% each, Corning 3% and SOXX 2%. The name is priced as a member of the optical-transceiver complex first and a semiconductor second — a financing headline at any member reprices all of them, and the broad chip tape barely notices.
Nvidia is the upstream driver of the demand line and, per its CEO's 2026-07-21 comment, holds roughly $2B of the equity. Coherent's 2026-08-12 print and the Ciena move Benzinga attributed to Lumentum's results the same day show the correlation runs in both directions: a good number at any Western optics supplier lifts the group, a dilution or margin miss at any of them (Fabrinet's, 2026-08-18) marks it down. The two forces now point opposite ways — order books described as capacity-constrained through mid-2027, against a cohort funding that capacity with equity.
Notes
- 2026-04-18: seed: Serenity/attention list
- 2026-04-21: theme list narrowed to Networking & optical only (ai-datacenter-infra + hyperscaler-capex dropped) — co-movement signal, track for saturation confirmation.
- Fiscal year ended 2026-06-27. FQ4 and full-year results landed 2026-08-11; FQ1 FY27 is due in early November. Confirm the exact date before print week.
- The FY26 $7.8B convert-equitization charge is non-cash. Trailing GAAP EPS and P/E screens stay distorted until it rolls out of the trailing window.
- Insider sales execute under pre-arranged Rule 10b5-1 plans, so Form 4 filing dates carry no discretionary timing signal.
- Institutional ownership was 98.15% on 2026-08-05, so the incremental bid is index- and cohort-driven rather than retail.
- Vendor quote pages diverge on several mid-August 2026 closes; check which adjusted series a cited price comes from before using it as a level.
- Compiled consensus targets diverge by publisher (an S&P compile at $1,148 on 2026-08-17 versus MarketBeat at $1,044.67); check the compiler and whether an EPS figure is GAAP or non-GAAP.

Silicon-photonics pivot re-rated the ADR ~3x, but the July blowoff to $28.96 round-tripped -26% to $21.25 in days while sell-side finally upgraded (Macquarie Outperform 2026-07-14) — late-stage distribution behaviour. The 2026-07-29 Q2 print is now the binary that decides whether the leg resumes or the re-rate unwinds.
WDC
Western Digital Corporation
The 29% bounce off the 2026-07-28 low stalled: WDC closed $527.22 on 2026-08-03, −3.23% on a day its sector rose 0.58%, back under a rising 50-day at $562.65. Consensus (~$3.69B / $3.31–$3.35) still sits above the company's own $3.65B ±$100M / $3.25 ±$0.15 guide, so the 2026-08-05 print — 16.8% implied — is the binary.
AAOI
Applied Optoelectronics, Inc.
The $110 shelf that defined the August leg is gone: the 2026-08-24 close of $107.63 fully unwinds the 2026-08-04 policy gap (pre-gap close $110.21), three sessions after a second $600,000,000 ATM was filed on 2026-08-21. Q2 revenue +86% YoY and a 115%–144% Q3 growth guide are intact, but the equity narrative is late-cycle with no company-controlled catalyst before Q3 (~2026-11-05). The narrative is saturated.
COHR
Coherent Corp.
Copper-to-optical interconnect narrative intact as a business (bookings into 2028, ~$1.9B NVDA stake) but the positioning trade is in distribution — ~35% off the 2026-06-02 ATH after correlated basket flushes. Week-of-7/21 semi rebound is a bounce, not a confirmed reclaim of the broken $404.94 shelf. The 2026-08-12 Q4 FY26 print is the next binary; the setup needs a volume-confirmed base.
