The three-session bounce failed at the 200-day: $368.45 on 2026-08-21 gave way to $358.76 on 2026-08-24 with RSI(14) at 18.4 and no company-specific headline — a fourth straight close under a rising 200-day marked $369.20. The unwithdrawn $29.4B/$16.0B guide meets the tape after the close on 2026-09-02; NVDA prints 08-26.

Kill line

A weekly close below $340 confirms the twice-failed reclaim of the $370 July shelf and the rising 200-day SMA marked at $369.20 on 2026-08-24. Secondary: Q3 FY26 on 2026-09-02 printing AI semiconductor revenue under the guided $16.0B or total revenue under $29.4B.

Current Thesis

The reclaim attempt failed. Three higher closes had carried Broadcom to $368.45 on 2026-08-21, right at the 200-day it lost on 08-19; the next session gave it back. The 2026-08-24 close was $358.76, roughly -2.6% on the day, and Benzinga's Monday piece marked the 200-day SMA at $369.20, the 50-day at $388.50 and the 20-day at $396.06 — price under all three, with the 200-day still edging higher (it was marked $369.07 on 2026-08-14). That makes four consecutive closes below the 200-day: $362.48, $364.03, $368.45, $358.76.

The move came without a company headline. Benzinga reported Nasdaq futures -0.57% and S&P 500 futures -0.16% into the 08-24 open and named no AVGO-specific catalyst. Drawdown from the $480.81 52-week high is 25.4%, the three-month price change is -14.9%, and RSI(14) on the adjusted daily series is 18.4, against 39.2 on 08-21 and 38.4 on 08-20. A two-day, twenty-point RSI collapse on a single -2.6% session is a thin-tape reading; it is a mechanical observation about momentum, not a forecast of a bounce.

Nothing in the operating file changed over the weekend. The guide set 2026-06-03 — $29.4B total revenue, $16.0B AI semiconductor revenue for Q3 FY26 — remains unwithdrawn and meets the tape after the close on 2026-09-02, company-confirmed. The financing story remains unsettled: Bloomberg (2026-08-20) and CNBC (2026-08-21) published incompatible tranche splits for the same deal.

The narrative is saturated. Flipped 2026-08-14 on the BofA credit action plus the Q2 13F wave, and the last week has extended rather than reversed it. Dating the label: six Benzinga peer-comparison and industry-inquiry templates on AVGO in seven sessions (08-17, 08-18, 08-19, 08-20, 08-21, 08-24); Schwab's 2026-08-10 July STAX naming Broadcom among five stocks retail clients net sold; The counter-evidence is genuine and dated: BMO Capital initiated coverage 2026-08-21 at Outperform with a $455 price objective, JPMorgan reiterated Overweight 2026-08-20, ARK bought Broadcom and Cerebras 2026-08-19, and Soros Fund Management raised 6.5% to 165,246 shares. Fresh sell-side initiation 25% below the high argues against dead; the retail-and-13F count still dominates.

Bullish and bearish views on Broadcom Inc.

The model's bull view on Broadcom Inc. (AVGO), in brief: 2026-06-03 — the guide is dated, specific and eleven weeks unrevised. The bear view: 2026-08-24 — the structure is broken on the close. Both cases follow in full.

Bull Case

  • 2026-06-03 — the guide is dated, specific and eleven weeks unrevised. Q3 FY26 total revenue $29.4B (+84% YoY) versus roughly $28.5B consensus at the time; AI semiconductor revenue $16.0B, over 200% YoY; FY26 AI revenue about $56B; FY27 AI reiterated above $100B.
  • 2026-06-03 — orders lead the revenue line. Q2 FY26 AI semiconductor book-to-bill reported at roughly 2.8x. That measures orders taken, and conversion timing is a separate variable, but it is the pipeline the 2026-09-02 print draws on.
  • 2026-08-21 — new coverage initiated into the drawdown. BMO Capital started at Outperform with a $455 price objective, with the shares 25% below the $480.81 high.
  • 2026-08-20 — JPMorgan reiterated Overweight, arguing the Google TPU roadmap is intact, network demand is surging, and FY26 AI revenue lands above $56B.
  • 2026-07-26 — Samsung–Broadcom pact reported at roughly $200B through 2030, a second-source foundry path away from TSMC and an extension of the custom-silicon roster to Google, Meta, OpenAI, Apple and Samsung.
  • Q2 FY26 — the software half is not a semiconductor bet. Infrastructure Software revenue $7.18B against Semiconductor Solutions $15.009B; a semis-only read misses roughly a third of the line.

Bear Case

  • 2026-08-24 — the structure is broken on the close. Four straight closes under a rising 200-day, price also under the 50-day ($388.50) and 20-day ($396.06), and the $370 July shelf lost 08-19 has not been reclaimed on any close since.
  • 2026-08-24 — the name traded as beta. No company-specific headline; the decline arrived with weaker index futures. When contracted backlog stops setting the price, an in-line print does not necessarily fix the chart.
  • 2026-08-14 — BofA cut issuer and bond ratings while raising FY2026 revenue and EBITDA forecasts, sizing the AI lease-financing platform at roughly $370B of senior debt by mid-2029 at 20GW and about $150B of new issuance in 2027. The equity story and the credit story are being underwritten off the same obligations.
  • 2026-08-20 vs 2026-08-21 — the reported terms do not reconcile. Bloomberg described a senior-secured tranche of roughly $60–70B with a junior tranche near $30B and a potential total near $100B; CNBC described a senior tranche around $45B and a junior near $35B, calling the figures fluid. Both name Blackstone and Apollo, and the vehicle sits outside Broadcom's balance sheet.
  • 2026-08-19 — Google's warrant to Marvell over nearly 59 million shares, worth as much as $12.2B, tied to up to $120B of revenue under a 2026-07-29 commercial agreement covering AI inference accelerators, storage controllers, NICs and memory-interface controllers. MRVL rose over 11% premarket; AVGO closed -4.61%. Google concentration cuts both ways.
  • Q2 FY26 — the software annuity grew 9% YoY, and the EU's VMware licensing investigation is live: the General Court rejected Broadcom's suspension bid on 2026-08-03.

Setup & Price Structure

Reference close 2026-08-24: $358.76. Levels that matter, all dated: the $370 July shelf, broken 2026-08-19 and untouched on a closing recovery since; the 200-day SMA, marked $369.07 on 08-14 and $369.20 on 08-24, so the level is rising toward the price rather than falling to meet it; the 50-day at $388.50 and 20-day at $396.06 as of 08-24. Benzinga put the stock roughly 21% below its early-June peak on 08-24.

Momentum: RSI(14) 18.4 on 08-24, from 39.2 on 08-21 and 38.4 on 08-20. The three-session bounce into 08-21 topped within a dollar of the 200-day and reversed — the specific behaviour that distinguishes a base from a pause.

Positioning observables, stated as observables. Distance to the moving averages is below, not above, so the usual extension signature is absent; what is present instead is coverage clustering (six syndicated Benzinga comparison pieces across 08-17 to 08-24), retail net selling in Schwab's 2026-08-10 STAX for July, and a Q2 13F wave of outright exits (Third Point, Duquesne) alongside a 51% cut (Tiger Global to 1,754,062 shares). Insider sales run predominantly through Rule 10b5-1 plans — Samueli's adopted 2025-12-16 — so their timing carries no discretionary signal. An earnings print sits eight sessions out, and NVDA reports in one.

Published targets sit far above the tape and have not yet marked down: a 48-analyst average of $527.88 compiled by S&P Global as of 2026-07-28, and a 27-analyst compilation carried by stockanalysis.com showing a $509.96 average with a $630 high and a $390 low as retrieved 2026-08-25. The gap between a $390 low objective and a $358.76 close is the part worth watching after 09-02.

Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)

  • 2026-08-26 — NVIDIA Q2 FY27 results (quarter ended 2026-07-26), call 2:00pm PT. Sets the factor tone for the AI-semi complex five sessions ahead of Broadcom and is the largest venue yet for the AI vendor-financing debate.
  • 2026-08-27 — Marvell Q2 FY27 results. First management description of the scope and timing of the 08-19 Google warrant and the 07-29 commercial agreement.
  • ~2026-09-01 (est.) — pricing, allocation or a settled tranche split on the reported AI chip debt.
  • 2026-09-02 — Broadcom Q3 FY26 results, after close, call 2:00pm PT (company-confirmed). Tests the $16.0B AI semiconductor and $29.4B total revenue guide and updates book-to-bill against roughly 2.8x.
  • ~2026-09-08 (est.) — Q3 FY26 Form 10-Q. Updates the $29B maximum theoretical loss disclosure on the first AI XPV transaction.
  • ~2026-09-10 (est.) — TSMC August monthly revenue. July landed 2026-08-10 at NT$467.58B, +44.7% YoY versus June's +67.9%.

What Would Change Our Mind

The structure has already been tested and lost twice: the $370 July shelf on 2026-08-19, and the 200-day reclaim on 2026-08-24. A third failure from lower would confirm that the rising 200-day is now resistance rather than a shelf, and the gradeable version of that is a weekly close below $340 — which would put the June–August range decisively behind price and take the saturated label toward dead.

On the fundamentals, the binary is dated. Q3 FY26 on 2026-09-02 printing AI semiconductor revenue under the guided $16.0B, or total revenue under $29.4B, breaks the one part of the thesis that has been unrevised since 2026-06-03. A book-to-bill materially under the roughly 2.8x reported that day would do similar damage to the backlog argument even on an in-line quarter.

What would move the read the other way: two consecutive weekly closes back above the 200-day, with the FY27 AI revenue framing above $100B reaffirmed on the 09-02 call and the senior tranche clearing at or above the ~$45B CNBC described on 08-21 without an enlarged Broadcom guarantee. That combination would argue maturing rather than saturated. Absent it, an oversold RSI reading on its own is not a base.

Correlation Notes

  • Index beta dominates on no-news days. The 2026-08-24 decline tracked weaker Nasdaq and S&P futures with no company catalyst, repeating the 2026-08-18 pattern of falling alongside NVDA, AMD and META on a yield move.
  • Rate sensitivity is being written about explicitly. Benzinga's 2026-08-20 piece noted only 3.85% of S&P 500 constituents now yield more than the 10-year Treasury, the lowest since May 2007 — the long-duration framing that has been overriding backlog.
  • Inverse to MRVL on custom-silicon share news. On 2026-08-19 Marvell rose over 11% premarket on the Google warrant while AVGO closed -4.61%. The 08-27 Marvell call is the next instance of that pair trading against each other.
  • TSMC monthly revenue is the upstream loading proxy, with the June-to-July step-down from +67.9% to +44.7% YoY the open question the ~09-10 August release addresses.
  • NVDA on 08-26 is the read-through event, because the vendor-financing objection raised against Broadcom on 08-14 and 08-20 applies to the whole complex.

Notes

  • 2026-04-19: AI networking (Tomahawk/Jericho) + VMware cashflow — #2 behind NVDA
  • 2026-07-26: Samsung–Broadcom ~$200B AI-chip pact through 2030 — second-source foundry away from TSMC, extends custom-silicon roster to Google/Meta/OpenAI/Apple/Samsung. Watch volume-ramp and node-allocation follow-through vs the headline.
  • Broadcom reports a month behind the calendar-quarter cohort: Q2 FY26 landed 2026-06-03, Q3 FY26 is company-confirmed for 2026-09-02 after close.
  • Two businesses in one line: Semiconductor Solutions $15.009B and Infrastructure Software $7.18B in Q2 FY26. A semis-only read misses roughly a third of revenue.
  • AI 'bookings' are backlog, not shipped revenue. The roughly 2.8x book-to-bill reported 2026-06-03 measures orders taken; conversion timing is a separate variable.
  • AI XPV residual-value guarantees are contingent liabilities disclosed in the 10-Q. The senior debt is issued through a special-purpose vehicle outside Broadcom's balance sheet.
  • Customer concentration is structural: Google and Meta dominate the AI silicon line, so one socket decision moves the segment more than any macro datapoint.
  • Most insider sales run through Rule 10b5-1 plans (Samueli's adopted 2025-12-16), so timing is pre-scheduled rather than a discretionary read on price.

Contract-annuity leg intact — 16 take-or-pay deals, ~$100B minimum contracted revenue to late 2030 — but on 2026-08-24 the tape found a counter-narrative: reports the White House may let Apple source DRAM from CXMT ahead of Xi's ~09-24 visit knocked MU from $966.78 to $910.43 and erased the $10B research-lab pop. Custom-silicon ASIC royalty story intact, but the AI-semi theme is mid-correction — chips posted their worst month vs software on record (7/17) with money rotating into energy.
