Regime Risk-on

Market regime

Risk-on prints for the first time (n=1), a flip from neutral that the model logged on 18 June 2026, breaking from the prior published neutral read on 17 June 2026. The flip came on firmer footing. VIX fell to 16.40 and regained its calm tag, no longer reading elevated. Breadth widened to 56.2% (549/977) above the 50-day EMA, back to healthy but only at the margin. SPY closed 746.75, +9.1% over its 200-EMA (684.51), a touch more extended than the prior session. The front of the curve did the work on rates: the 2Y jumped 11bps to 4.20% while the 10Y barely moved, +1bp to 4.49%, flattening the 10Y–2Y spread 10bps to 0.29%. The 10Y breakeven eased 5bps to 2.26% and the real 10Y firmed 6bps to 2.23%, a shade more restrictive. Credit kept confirming: HY tightened 8bps to 2.63%.

Regime assessment

Vol eased back to calm and breadth improved, but participation is broadening only at the margin rather than decisively, the kind of tape that punishes chasing and rewards trailing. The front-end rate move is the part to respect: a curve flattening on the 2Y, not the 10Y, says the market is pricing a higher-for-longer hold, and a firmer real rate leans against the highest-multiple narratives first. The offset is credit, where risk capital is still paying up alongside equities instead of backing away, and a labor market that isn't cracking. Net, this argues for tighter selectivity over more beta: press only the cleanest accelerating stories with cluster confirmation and keep the rest on a short leash. A marginal tape, even a calmer one, is no place to add broad exposure.

What would change the call

Breadth is the load-bearing leg and the cushion is thin; the read turns toward neutral or risk-off if participation slides under 50% from 56.2%. VIX is back to calm at 16.40; a push higher from here puts a genuine vol bid back into the tape. On credit, HY breaking meaningfully wider off 2.63% would remove a clean confirm. On rates, the real 10Y firming further past 2.23%, or the 2Y extending its 11bp move and dragging the curve toward inversion off 0.29%, hits the high-multiple names first.

What to watch

  • Next CPI against a 2.26% breakeven: a hot read pushes the real rate further the wrong way for momentum multiples, just as it firmed +6bps.
  • Next payrolls and claims: claims improved to 226K (−4K); whether the 159.0M payroll trend and 4.3% unemployment hold or the labor margin starts to give.
  • The VIX path from 16.40: back to calm, so whether it holds there or the bid rebuilds is the fastest route to handing back the regime.
  • Fed path against a 3.63% funds rate, with the 2Y leading an 11bp jump and the curve flattening to 0.29% the market is doing repricing the Fed hasn't.
