Regime Neutral

Market regime

Breadth edged up to a narrow majority, with 502 of 978 names closing above their own 50-day exponential moving average (EMA). Breadth is the one input still keeping the read from risk-on. Risk-on needs 55% while the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY), a fund that tracks the S&P 500, stays at least 5% above its 200-day EMA, its long-term trend line. SPY's gap above that line widened today, so it sits further from the 5% mark that keeps the lower 55% bar in place. The Cboe Volatility Index (VIX), a gauge of expected stock swings, eased at the 20 October 2026 close and remains far from the 28 level that would trigger risk-off. The 21 October 2026 VIX close is not yet published.

Regime assessment

The index is advancing faster than its members are joining in. This suggests gains still rest on a subset of stocks rather than a broad advance.

Calm volatility gives the advance room to widen. Options pricing points to modest expected swings. This suggests investors are not paying up for protection against a sharp drop.

Federal Reserve rate, credit, labor and housing readings were not updated for this session. They are context only and do not bear on the call.

What would change the call

The call is neutral because no risk-off trigger is met. Risk-on needs breadth at 55% or above while SPY stays at least 5% above its 200-day EMA, or above 60% otherwise (now 51.3%). The call turns risk-off if any of these happens:

  • SPY closes more than 2% below its 200-day EMA (now +5.7%).
  • Breadth falls under 40% (now 51.3%).
  • VIX rises above 28 (now 17.31).

Rates, credit, labor and housing data do not move the call.

Each supporting view has its own test:

  • Narrow participation: fails if breadth climbs toward 55% while SPY holds at least 5% above its 200-day EMA. That would show the advance is widening.
  • Calm volatility: fails if VIX closes back above 18.44 while breadth stalls near 51.3%. That would show protection demand rising before participation does.

What to watch

  • Daily breadth reading: each close tests the read. A reading under 40% turns it risk-off. With SPY at least 5% above its 200-day EMA, a reading of 55% or above turns it risk-on.
  • SPY versus its 200-day EMA: a close less than 5% above the line raises the risk-on breadth bar back to 60%.
  • VIX close for 21 October: once published, it shows whether volatility kept easing or turned back toward the 28 trigger.
  • Federal Reserve data updates: fresh rate and credit readings add context on financing conditions. They do not move the call.

Status

Neutral; ninth consecutive neutral read in the journal, same as the prior level on 20 October 2026.
