Regime Neutral

The week in review

The market regime is neutral. The close-of-day read for Friday, 30 October kept the call unchanged from the prior read. Prices sit well above trend, but too few stocks are taking part for a risk-on reading.

Price is the strongest input. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) closed at 755.72. Its 200-day exponential moving average (EMA) is 733.47, so the fund sits 3.0% above that trend line.

Breadth is what holds the call at neutral. In the market-breadth count, 543 of 978 names are above their own 50-day EMA, or 55.5%. That is healthy, but it sits below the level a risk-on call requires.

Volatility is calm. The Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) was 17.2 at the 29 October 2026 close. The 30 October close has not yet been published.

The call is neutral because no risk-off trigger is met and risk-on needs breadth above 60% (now 55.5%). It turns risk-off if SPY closes more than 2% below its 200-day EMA (now +3.0%), if breadth falls under 40% (now 55.5%), or if VIX rises above 28 (now 17.2).

Rates eased during the week. Rates are context for the reading and play no part in setting the call. Federal Reserve data put the 2-year Treasury yield at 4.61% on 29 October, down 8 basis points (bps) week over week. The 10-year yield fell 2bps to 4.98% over the same week. The 10-year minus 2-year spread widened 7bps week over week to 0.38% as of 30 October. This suggests the bond market priced lower short-term rates faster than lower long-term ones.

Inflation expectations held still. The 10-year breakeven rate was 2.34% on 30 October, flat week over week. The real 10-year rate was 2.64% on 29 October, down 2bps.

Credit firmed. The high-yield credit spread narrowed 12bps week over week to 3.26% on 29 October. Initial jobless claims were 194K for the week of 24 October, down 1K week over week.

The other labor and housing figures date to September. Unemployment was 4.2% and nonfarm payrolls were 159.0M. Housing starts ran at 1,221K. The fed funds rate stood at 3.75%.

Themes in motion

Three narratives are accelerating this week: M&A and special situations, oncology and immunology, and cyclical industrials. Oil, energy and geopolitics is the one theme the research reads as saturated.

The cyclical industrials theme is accelerating. It shares the week with SPY holding above its 200-day EMA and with high-yield spreads narrowing. This suggests the industrial story has support from both price and credit. A widening in the high-yield spread would cut against that reading.

The M&A and special situations theme is accelerating across six names. Oncology and immunology is accelerating across four.

Six themes are maturing. They are Cybersecurity, AI enterprise software, consumer discretionary rotation, medtech and diagnostics, fintech and consumer credit, and managed care and health services. Consumer discretionary rotation is the broadest of these, at 11 names.

The oil, energy and geopolitical theme is saturated. This suggests the geopolitical supply story is already widely recognized. The scheduled end of Russia's diesel export ban on 31 October now tests that story from the supply side.

Under the lens

Microsoft (MSFT) is the name the research rates at high conviction this week. The case rests on accelerating cloud growth. The research refreshed 778 company dossiers over the week.

  • Microsoft (MSFT). Azure, Microsoft's cloud platform, accelerated to 48% constant-currency growth in fiscal Q1 FY27. The company guides to 49–50% for the next quarter. The case is that cloud demand is still speeding up at Microsoft's scale. Fiscal Q2 FY27 settles it. Constant-currency Azure growth inside or above the 49–50% range confirms the acceleration. Growth below 49% breaks it.

The week ahead

Every dated catalyst on the two-week calendar falls on 31 October, the weekend itself. Most are fiscal period ends, which fix the measuring date. Their answers arrive with later reports, and those report dates are not yet on the calendar.

  • UiPath (PATH). Its fiscal third quarter ends on 31 October. That is the date its annual recurring revenue (ARR) outlook of $1.992–1.997 billion applies to. ARR reported inside that range confirms the guidance. ARR reported below it breaks the guidance.
  • Synopsys (SNPS). Fiscal 2026 and its fourth quarter end on 31 October. The full-year report closes out the year's results.
  • Ambarella (AMBA), Braze (BRZE) and Rubrik (RBRK). Each company's fiscal third quarter ends on 31 October. Each company's next report covers the period that closes on this date.
  • FuelCell Energy (FCEL). 31 October is the fiscal year-end checkpoint for the initial 30 MW Fit Energy deliveries. It is also the checkpoint for the 100 MW annualized production-rate target. Year-end results confirm both milestones or show a miss on either.
  • Canadian Solar (CSIQ). A company update is due on its Jeffersonville, Indiana Phase I cell plant, which has 2.1 gigawatts of capacity. The update shows whether the plant is on its stated path to full-scale production.
  • Mama's Creations (MAMA). October is the company's stated month for first Kroger deliveries, and its fiscal Q3 FY2027 ends on 31 October. The quarterly report confirms the deliveries began, or shows the timeline slipped.
  • Sagimet Biosciences (SGMT). The guided October window for screening in the AURORA Phase 3 acne trial closes on 31 October. A company update confirming screening finished in the window keeps the trial on schedule. A later date breaks that schedule.
  • HF Sinclair (DINO). Russia's diesel export ban for fuel producers is scheduled to end on 31 October. The ban was already partly lifted on 10 October. A full lifting removes one supply constraint behind the saturated oil, energy and geopolitical theme.
  • Elemental Royalty (ELE). 31 October is the target date for completing the sale of its Generation business to Carlin East. A completion announcement confirms the timeline. No announcement shows the deal has slipped.
  • JPMorgan Chase (JPM). The bank pays its raised $1.65 quarterly dividend on 31 October.
  • Genesco (GCO). The retirement of Parag Desai, Chief Strategy and Digital Officer, takes effect on 31 October.
