Regime Risk-offThe week in review
The market regime reads risk-off at the last close-of-day read, and one input holds it there: the VIX (Cboe Volatility Index) stood at 28.18 at the 5 November 2026 close, above the 28 line in the regime rules. The 6 November 2026 VIX close is not yet published.
The other two inputs sit near neutral. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) closed at 735.4 against a 200-day exponential moving average (EMA) of 734.88, or +0.1%. That is above the line that would trigger risk-off and short of the line risk-on requires. Breadth is mixed: 503 of 978 names are above their own 50-day EMA, or 51.4%.
The call is held by VIX above 28, now 28.18. It leaves risk-off only when VIX is back at 28 or below. The call then reads neutral unless the risk-on conditions are also met: SPY more than 0.5% above its 200-day EMA (now +0.1%), breadth above 60% (now 51.4%) and VIX below 28 (now 28.18).
Treasury yields fell this week. Federal Reserve data show the 10-year yield at 4.84% and the 2-year at 4.46% as of 5 November 2026, each down 10bps week over week. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell 11bps week over week to 2.23%. The real 10-year rate rose 1bps to 2.61%. This suggests the drop in yields came from lower inflation expectations, with real borrowing costs unchanged.
Credit widened slightly. The high-yield credit spread was 3.48% on 5 November 2026, up 4bps week over week. The 10-year minus 2-year spread was 0.35% on 6 November 2026, down 3bps week over week.
Labor data stayed firm. Initial jobless claims were 189K for the week to 31 October 2026, down 6K week over week. Unemployment was 4.1% and the fed funds rate 3.88% in the October readings. These figures are context for the reading. They do not move the call.

Themes in motion
Three narratives are accelerating this week: AI enterprise software, consumer discretionary rotation, and rare disease and gene therapy. They run against a risk-off market. That makes their next company reports the test of whether the acceleration holds while volatility stays high.
Five narratives are maturing. They are M&A and special situations, fintech and consumer credit, managed care and health services, medtech and diagnostics, and oncology and immunology. A maturing theme has an established story. The open question is whether results keep pace with it.
The Cybersecurity theme is saturated. This suggests the story is widely known and further gains depend on company results beyond what is already expected.
Under the lens
Microsoft is the name the research rates highest this week, and its case rests on one number: Azure cloud growth. The research holds Microsoft at high conviction across the 665 dossiers refreshed this week. It is the only name at that level, so there is no group to read across.
- Microsoft Corporation (MSFT). Azure, Microsoft's cloud platform, grew 48% in the latest quarter. The company guided to 49–50% for the next quarter. The thesis is that growth is still speeding up and that this carries the case. The next quarterly report settles it. Azure growth inside or above 49–50% would confirm the thesis. Growth below 49% would break it, because the case depends on that acceleration.
The week ahead
The densest cluster of dated events falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026, when liver-disease and autoimmune data arrive before Monday's open.
- Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B), 7 November 2026. Third-quarter 2026 earnings and the 10-Q quarterly filing are due about 7 a.m. Central today. The first market reaction comes on 9 November 2026.
- Vir Biotechnology (VIR), 8 November 2026. ECLIPSE 1 primary-endpoint results are due as a late-breaking oral presentation at AASLD (the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases meeting) in Denver at 2:15 p.m. Mountain Time. The data resolve whether the trial met its primary endpoint.
- Mirum Pharmaceuticals (MIRM), 8 November 2026. Full AZURE-1 Phase 3 results and Phase 2b 48-week brelovitug results are due at The Liver Meeting. The full dataset shows whether the detail supports the headline findings.
- Precision BioSciences (DTIL), 8 November 2026. PBGENE-HBV results are due as a late-breaking oral presentation at the same meeting. The data bear on the rare disease and gene therapy theme, which is accelerating, and test whether the gene-editing approach holds up in hepatitis B.
- Cullinan Therapeutics (CGEM), 8 November 2026. A multi-dose poster on velinotamig in systemic lupus erythematosus is due at ACR Convergence 2026. Multi-dose data show whether the drug's early profile holds with repeat dosing.
- Santacruz Silver Mining (SCZM), 8 November 2026. A second US$4.6M payment is due on the acquired mill. Payment on schedule would confirm the acquisition is on track. A missed or deferred payment would raise questions about the deal.
- 9 November 2026 reports. AbCellera (ABCL) reports Q3 2026 results with a 5:00 p.m. Eastern call. Digital Turbine (APPS) reports fiscal 2027 second-quarter results at 4:30 p.m. Eastern, rescheduled from 2 November 2026. AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) holds a third-quarter business update call at 5:00 p.m. Eastern. Axogen (AXGN) holds an investor call on the prostate market opportunity. Bicara Therapeutics (BCAX) reports Q3 2026 results. AAON, Akebia Therapeutics (AKBA), Alto Ingredients (ALTO) and AXT (AXTI) also have events dated that day.
For the regime, the next published VIX close decides the reading. A VIX close at 28 or below would end risk-off and move the call to neutral, unless SPY is also more than 0.5% above its 200-day EMA, breadth is above 60% and VIX is below 28. A VIX close above 28 keeps risk-off in place.
