How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 8 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A daily close below $175, under the 8 October 2026 close of $183.87. Separately, 28 October 2026 guidance with all-in sustaining cost above US$1,550 per ounce or output under 3.3 million ounces breaks the case.
Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

How picks are graded →The thesis
Agnico Eagle Mines' gold-driven cash flow is strong, but the shares remain 25.4% below their 52-week high, so the case is unconfirmed. The 28 October 2026 third-quarter report settles whether mine costs and the Barnat disruption leave the gold benefit intact.
The adjusted daily close was $187.36 on 21 October 2026, up from $183.87 on 8 October 2026. The 52-week high is $251.19, and the shares are up 29.3% over three months from a low July starting point. Three brokers moved this week: JPMorgan kept Neutral and raised its target to $190 on 21 October 2026, Barclays kept Overweight and raised its target to $218 on 19 October 2026, and Raymond James adjusted its target on 19 October 2026, all per Benzinga headlines.
The narrative is maturing: gold-miner coverage peaked in August, when Benzinga on 17 August 2026 reported miners heading for their best month since April 2020, and interest has been mixed since the 28 September 2026 Benzinga headline "Why Are Precious Metal Stocks Falling Today?". The price is back above the 8 October 2026 close, but it is still under the 25 September 2026 close of $194.48 cited in the prior note.
Bullish and bearish views on Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd.
The bull case on Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM), in brief: Record cash generation in the second quarter. The bear case: Recovery is partial.
Bull case
- Record cash generation in the second quarter. Agnico reported US$1,335 million of free cash flow on 29 July 2026 at a realized gold price of US$4,483 per ounce. Kitco reported on 31 July 2026 that the company returned a record US$625 million to shareholders in the quarter.
- Cost guidance was unchanged. The 29 July 2026 release kept full-year all-in sustaining cost guidance at US$1,400–US$1,550 per ounce. Margin per ounce holds if that ceiling survives the 28 October 2026 report.
- Net cash cushions the business. The company reported cash of US$3,464 million and net cash of US$3,267 million at 30 June 2026. Benzinga on 15 October 2026 cited BMO Capital Markets figures putting producers in its coverage at about US$19.6 billion more cash than debt.
- Analyst targets are rising. Barclays (Overweight) lifted its target to $218 on 19 October 2026, and JPMorgan (Neutral) lifted its target to $190 on 21 October 2026, from $179 on 3 August 2026. UBS (Neutral) set $190 on 8 October 2026.
Bear case
- Recovery is partial. The 21 October 2026 close of $187.36 is below the $194.48 close of 25 September 2026 and the $206.25 close of 28 August 2026. The shares have given back much of the late-August gain.
- Gold has slipped from the second-quarter average. Arab Finance put spot gold near US$4,164 per ounce on 19 October 2026, and Benzinga on 15 October 2026 reported a drop of as much as 2% to about US$4,075 after a hot September inflation reading. The company's realized price was US$4,483 in the second quarter, so third-quarter cash flow depends on the quarter's average price.
- Second-quarter earnings missed. Benzinga reported on 29 July 2026 that adjusted earnings per share of $3.05 fell short of the $3.27 estimate, and sales of $3.803 billion fell short of $3.851 billion.
- Barnat limits output. On 29 July 2026 the company said annual gold production would land near the low end of 3.3–3.5 million ounces after the 2 July 2026 rock movement. Guidance below 3.3 million ounces on 28 October 2026 would break that range.
- Rates are rising. The Federal Reserve raised its target range a quarter-point to 3.75%–4.00% on 16 September 2026. A further increase at the 28 October 2026 meeting would add pressure on gold.
Price setup
The adjusted daily close on 21 October 2026 was $187.36, with a 14-day relative strength index (RSI) of 56.9. The index is a momentum gauge on a 0–100 scale, and readings near 50 are neutral. On 8 October 2026 it stood at 34.7, so selling pressure has eased.
Levels: the 52-week high is $251.19, the 28 August 2026 close was $206.25, the 25 September 2026 close was $194.48, and the 8 October 2026 close was $183.87. The 50-day and 200-day moving averages are not available for this note. Analyst targets sit on both sides of the price: JPMorgan $190 (21 October 2026), UBS $190 (8 October 2026) and Barclays $218 (19 October 2026).
Crowding evidence is limited. The third-quarter report is due after the close in six sessions. The price is not stretched above a rising average, and 19 October 2026 Benzinga pieces on five-year returns show retail-oriented content continues. SEC Form 4 insider filings and share issuance are not available for this note.

What would change the view
The case breaks if the 28 October 2026 report raises full-year all-in sustaining cost guidance above US$1,550 per ounce or lowers annual output below 3.3 million ounces.
Evidence that would strengthen it: third-quarter free cash flow near the second-quarter US$1,335 million with cost guidance intact, and a close above the $194.48 level of 25 September 2026.
What it trades with
Agnico trades with spot gold and the VanEck Gold Miners ETF; Benzinga on 15 October 2026 reported that the ETF fell harder than the metal in the latest slump. Rate decisions matter because the Federal Reserve's 16 September 2026 increase coincided with the gold pullback. Peers such as Kinross, which Benzinga compared on net cash and cost margin on 19 August 2026, report on their own schedules and can move the group before and after 28 October 2026.
