Against its published line

Above its line on the last close.

How to read this

The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on the last session; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.

Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.

How a pick is graded

ATHMAutohome Inc.
$19.50

+3.2%

Kill line

A daily close below $19.50, which would break the October trading range. A cut to the at-least-RMB1.5bn 2026 cash dividend, or Q3 buyback spending still near US$43.6m, would also break the case.

Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

The thesis

Autohome's capital-return case is still unproven. Second-quarter revenue fell 32% year over year, China car retail is still shrinking, and the shares closed at $20.12 on 28 October 2026. The third-quarter report, due before US markets open on 4 November 2026, settles whether leads-generation revenue, the line tied to dealer marketing budgets, is still falling.

That is one day earlier than the ~5 November 2026 estimate in the previous note. The previous note recorded a close of $20.37 on 15 October 2026.

The narrative is maturing: the buyback and dividend story has been public since the 28 July 2026 repurchase announcement, and the company has issued no results or financing disclosure since 20 August 2026. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI, a 0–100 momentum gauge) was 45.1 on 28 October 2026, up from 30.3 on 15 October 2026, so the near-oversold reading has cleared.

The company's commitments are unchanged. Management reaffirmed at least RMB1.5 billion of 2026 cash dividends on the 20 August 2026 call. About US$43.6 million of the US$400 million buyback had been spent through 14 August 2026.

The shares are down 13.4% over three months and sit 15.5% below the 52-week high of $23.82, measured on adjusted daily closes.

Bullish and bearish views on Autohome Inc.

The bull case on Autohome Inc. (ATHM), in brief: Dividend floor remains in place. The bear case: Revenue is falling fast.

Bull case

  • Dividend floor remains in place. On the 20 August 2026 call, management reaffirmed at least RMB1.5 billion of full-year 2026 cash dividends, after RMB500 million paid for the first half. No later announcement has changed that language.
  • Buyback authorisation is large and open. The US$400 million ADS repurchase programme approved 28 July 2026 runs to 28 July 2027. About US$43.6 million was spent through 14 August 2026, so most of the authorisation was unspent at that date.
  • Profitability held in the second quarter. Autohome reported operating income of RMB130.0 million on revenue of RMB1,198.0 million in the quarter reported 20 August 2026.
  • Momentum has recovered from the October low. The RSI rose from 30.3 on 15 October 2026 to 45.1 on 28 October 2026, and the close of $20.12 remains above the $19.50 invalidation level in the previous note.

Bear case

  • Revenue is falling fast. Second-quarter 2026 revenue of RMB1,198.0 million was down 32% year over year, per the 20 August 2026 release. Leads generation was RMB560.4 million.
  • The industry decline is deep and persistent. The China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) put September 2026 retail at 1.702 million vehicles, down 24.0% year over year (SteelOrbis, 12 October 2026). Another outlet, goodcarbadcar.net, reported 1.618 million, down 28%.
  • The shares have not recovered the summer range. The 28 October 2026 close of $20.12 is under the $21.11–$21.80 range of 13 July to 27 July 2026 cited in the previous note.
  • Control sits with one holder. Cartech (Haier Group) has held about 43% since 27 August 2025, so minority holders have little say over capital allocation.

Price setup

The last adjusted daily close was $20.12 on 28 October 2026. The 52-week high is $23.82, 15.5% above that close. The three-month change is down 13.4%.

The shares closed at $20.37 on 15 October 2026 and at $20.12 on 28 October 2026, a narrow range while the RSI moved from 30.3 to 45.1. A daily close below $19.50 would break the current range and end the case. A close above the July range of $21.11–$21.80 would show the decline has reversed.

Crowding evidence is limited. An imminent earnings date is the one observable item: the report lands six sessions after the 28 October 2026 close. No Form 4 filings exist for this foreign private issuer, so insider selling cannot be observed.

Catalysts, next 30 days

  • The report shows whether revenue fell faster than the 32% of the second quarter and how much of the US$400 million buyback has been spent beyond US$43.6 million.
  • ~10 November 2026 (est.): CPCA October retail data. The industry body publishes preliminary monthly passenger-vehicle retail in the second week of the month. A decline near or beyond 24% would match the September pace.
  • ~2027-03 (est.): FY2026 results and final dividend. The full-year figure tests the RMB1.5 billion floor, with about RMB1.0 billion still to be declared.

What would change the view

The case breaks if the company cuts the at-least-RMB1.5 billion 2026 cash dividend, or if the third-quarter report shows buyback spending still near US$43.6 million. It also breaks if leads-generation revenue falls faster than in the second quarter. A daily close below $19.50 would end the case on price.

The case strengthens if the 4 November 2026 report shows revenue decline narrowing from 32% and buyback spending rising materially from US$43.6 million, with the dividend language unchanged.

What it trades with

Autohome trades with China-based US-listed consumer and internet ADRs and with the Hong Kong line 2518. Its revenue depends on dealer marketing spending, so it follows CPCA retail data more closely than it follows general China internet sentiment. The 1 ADS = 4 Class A ordinary shares ratio means per-ADS and per-share figures in filings differ by a factor of four.

Notes

  • 1 ADS = 4 Class A ordinary shares; per-ADS and per-ordinary-share figures in filings differ by a factor of four.
  • Foreign private issuer filing on Form 20-F: officers and directors do not file Form 4s, so US insider-transaction data is structurally unavailable.
  • Cartech (Haier Group) has been controlling shareholder with about 43% since 27 August 2025; minority holders do not control governance outcomes.
  • VIEs contributed 10.3% of 2025 net revenues (2025 Form 20-F, filed 15 April 2026), a standard China ADR contractual-control structure.
  • The Hong Kong line 2518 carries the HKEX secondary-listing designation, which keeps it outside Stock Connect.
  • Management gives no revenue or earnings guidance; dividends are declared in USD against an RMB-stated floor.
