Against its published line

Above its line on the last close.

How to read this

The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 28 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.

Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.

Kill line

A daily close below $80, a round level under the 28 October 2026 close of $87.25. A cut to full-year production guidance or third-quarter all-in sustaining cost above $2,039 per ounce would also break the case.

Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

The thesis

AngloGold Ashanti's shares remain a leveraged bet on the gold price, and they have fallen through the $90 level the previous note named. The third-quarter report, expected around 6 November 2026, settles whether second-half output and unit costs hold the company's guidance. The shares closed at $87.25 on 28 October 2026, 29.3% below the 52-week high of $123.39.

The close on 15 October 2026 was $91.57, so the decline has extended. The Federal Reserve held its policy range at 3.75%–4.00% on 28 October 2026 in a 10–2 vote, with two members preferring a quarter-point hike, CNBC reported. Mining.com described gold testing a $4,000 an ounce floor ahead of that decision.

The narrative is saturated: five-year-return retrospectives on the shares were still running in September, and attention has not produced new buying. The shares have not yet recovered, and a recovery case rests on quarterly production and cost figures.

Bullish and bearish views on AngloGold Ashanti plc

The bull case on AngloGold Ashanti plc (AU), in brief: Cash generation is large. The bear case: Gold is under rate pressure.

Bull case

  • Cash generation is large. The 31 July 2026 second-quarter release reported free cash flow of $727 million and net cash of $991 million at 30 June 2026.
  • Second-half output is guided higher. Management reaffirmed full-year guidance on 31 July 2026, weighted "significantly" to the second half, against second-quarter production of 744 thousand ounces. A clear step-up in the third-quarter report would show volume arriving.
  • Analysts remain positive. Goldman Sachs initiated coverage at Buy with a $104 price target on 15 October 2026, per Benzinga. JPMorgan raised its target to $140 from $134 and kept Overweight on 15 September 2026.

Bear case

  • Gold is under rate pressure. The Fed raised its range on 16 September 2026, and two members dissented in favour of another hike on 28 October 2026, per CNBC. Mining.com placed gold near $4,000 an ounce going into that decision, down from near $4,140 on 2 October 2026 (Trading Economics).
  • Analyst targets are being trimmed. Company-news headlines reported Roth cut its AngloGold Ashanti target on 27 October 2026 while keeping a Buy rating. BMO Capital downgraded to Market Perform on 10 September 2026 and kept a $115 target.
  • Costs may absorb the gold price. Second-quarter all-in sustaining cost (AISC, the full cost of producing an ounce) was $2,039 per ounce, lifted by royalties, fuel, inflation and currency.
  • Host-government risk is unresolved. Ghana, Tanzania and Egypt operations are exposed to royalty and fiscal changes, and Ghana has a December 2026 contract-mining mandate.

Price setup

The adjusted close was $87.25 on 28 October 2026. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI, a 0–100 momentum gauge) was 43.4, up from 36.1 on 15 October 2026 and below the midpoint of 50. The three-month price change was 10.7%, down from 23.1% in the previous note.

The $90 round number, the invalidation level in the previous note, now sits above the shares. The $105 weekly-close level lost on 18 September 2026 remains well overhead. The 52-week high of $123.39 came in the advance that peaked around 21 August 2026.

Crowding looks low to moderate. The company reports on Form 6-K as a foreign private issuer, so no US Form 4 insider filings exist. The earnings report is about a week away. Goldman Sachs' $104 target is $16.75 above the latest close.

Catalysts, next 30 days

  • ~6 November 2026, est.: AngloGold Ashanti third-quarter results and dividend declaration. AJ Bell's calendar lists 6 November 2026, and the company has not been confirmed on that date. The report tests second-half production and unit costs against the 31 July 2026 guidance.
  • December 2026: Ghana contract-mining mandate. It falls outside the 30-day window but bears on host-government risk.

What would change the view

The case breaks if third-quarter production fails to rise meaningfully from the second quarter's 744 thousand ounces, if full-year production guidance is cut, or if third-quarter AISC comes in above $2,039 per ounce. A host-government royalty or windfall-tax proposal in Ghana, Tanzania or Egypt would also break it. On price, a daily close below $80 would show the decline extending well past the $90 level.

An improvement would show in a third-quarter report with output up and costs at or below $2,039 per ounce while spot gold holds near $4,000 an ounce. A gold price trading below $4,000 an ounce after the Fed's hold would weigh on the margin over cost.

What it trades with

The shares have moved with gold and with rate expectations. Benzinga reported gold miners falling 1.9% on 4 September 2026 after August payrolls beat by 106,000, and mining stocks fell on 28 August 2026 after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh signalled commitment against inflation. Softer US data has helped the shares, and hotter inflation or payroll data has hurt them. Silver miners such as First Majestic Silver moved in the same direction on 28 August 2026.

Notes

  • Reports on Form 6-K as a foreign private issuer, so US Form 4 insider-transaction filings do not exist for this name.
  • A dividend is declared with each quarterly report; the second-quarter US$0.72 per share went ex-dividend on 21 August 2026 and was paid 4 September 2026.
  • Earnings track the spread of realised gold price over all-in sustaining cost, which was $2,039 per ounce in Q2 2026.
  • FY2026 production, cost and capex guidance was reaffirmed on 31 July 2026, with output guided as significantly weighted to the second half.
  • Ghana, Tanzania and Egypt operations expose the company to host-government royalty and fiscal changes that are often revisited at high metal prices.
