Kill line

A daily close below $264.48, the 25 September 2026 close that marked the late-September low. Monthly average daily volume under the 26.3 million contracts of October 2025 would also break the case.

Open pick Medium conviction, opened at $306.24. Since then +0.3% against the S&P 500's −2.5% (+2.9 pp). Kill line at open: $264.48 (daily close); graded by at the latest.

The thesis

CME Group's trading boom carried into the fourth quarter: October average daily volume reached 30 million contracts, a record for the month and up 15% from a year earlier (CME release, 3 November 2026). The case is that this activity keeps revenue near the third quarter's $1.737 billion, and the November volume release, estimated for 2 December 2026, is the next test.

October came in below September's all-time monthly record of 31.8 million contracts, so the pace eased while staying well above last year's 26.3 million. Interest rate products drove the gain. The narrative is maturing: record volume has been published monthly since early October and the 21 October 2026 report confirmed it in revenue, while October's growth of 15% was slower than September's 22%.

The shares closed at $307.24 on 5 November 2026, up from $295.79 on 21 October 2026 and 2.7% below the 52-week high of $315.74. The case fails on a daily close below $264.48, the 25 September 2026 close.

Bullish and bearish views on CME Group Inc.

The bull case on CME Group Inc. (CME), in brief: October set a monthly volume record. The bear case: October fell short of September.

Bull case

  • October set a monthly volume record. Average daily volume of 30 million contracts rose 15% from 26.3 million in October 2025 (CME release, 3 November 2026). International volume rose 9% to 9 million contracts, with Asia-Pacific up 15% to 2.3 million.
  • Treasury trading led the growth. US Treasury futures and options rose 48% to 9.2 million contracts a day in October, and interest rate products as a whole rose 28% to 14.8 million (CME release, 3 November 2026). BrokerTec, CME's Treasury trading platform, rose 50% to $120 billion in average daily notional value.
  • Volume has already reached revenue. CME's 8-K reported third-quarter revenue of $1,737.3 million against $1,537.6 million a year earlier, and adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $3.02 (21 October 2026). Benzinga reported that this beat estimates of $2.98 and $1.711 billion, after a second-quarter beat of $2.99 against $2.91 on 22 July 2026.
  • Targets rose after the results. Autonomous Research raised its target to $321 from $311 on 30 October 2026, and Goldman Sachs raised its target to $271 from $254 on 23 October 2026. Morgan Stanley's target was $337 on 9 October 2026.
  • The regular dividend is higher. CME declared a fourth-quarter dividend of $1.30 a share on 5 November 2026, payable 30 December 2026 to holders of record on 11 December 2026. The fourth-quarter dividend declared on 6 November 2025 was $1.25.

Bear case

  • October fell short of September. Average daily volume of 30 million contracts compares with 31.8 million in September (CME releases, 2 October 2026 and 3 November 2026). Year-over-year growth slowed to 15% from 22%.
  • Growth was narrow outside rates. Energy rose 1% to 2.7 million contracts a day and agricultural products rose 7% to 2.1 million in October (CME release, 3 November 2026). That compares with double-digit growth across all six asset classes in the third quarter, as cited by chief executive Terry Duffy on 21 October 2026.
  • Crypto volume kept shrinking. Cryptocurrency average daily volume fell to 145,000 contracts in October from 174,000 in September and 279,800 in the first half of 2026 (CME releases, 2 October 2026 and 3 November 2026). Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures launched on 20 October 2026 without reversing the monthly decline.
  • Insiders sold after the rally. SEC Form 4 filings show chief commercial officer Julie Winkler sold 10,079 shares at a $305.15 weighted average on 2 November 2026, leaving 21,482 owned directly. Director Howard Siegel's trust sold 2,000 shares at $303.00 the same day, and neither filing marks the sale as made under a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan.
  • Regulators slowed one product push. CME withdrew its 24/7 10-barrel crude oil futures filing on 2 October 2026 after the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) moved to stay the listing on 9 July 2026.

Price setup

The adjusted daily close was $307.24 on 5 November 2026, 2.7% below the 52-week high of $315.74. The shares rose 17.1% over three months. The 14-day relative strength index, a momentum gauge on a 0-to-100 scale, stood at 63.3. A close above $315.74 would be a new 52-week high.

The 2 November insider sales took place between $303.00 and $305.34, near current prices. Company news also reported an insider share sale on 28 October 2026. Earnings are not imminent, so the monthly volume release is the nearest scheduled evidence.

The last close sits above several published targets: Goldman Sachs at $271 (23 October 2026), Barclays at $281 (7 October 2026), UBS at $270 (5 October 2026) and TD Cowen at $300 (5 October 2026). The last three predate the third-quarter results. It sits below Autonomous Research at $321 and Morgan Stanley at $337. Bank of America's Underperform target was $230 on 23 July 2026.

Catalysts, next 30 days

  • ~2 December 2026, est.: November volume release. It shows whether average daily volume stays near October's 30 million contracts and whether crypto volume recovers from 145,000.
  • ~3 February 2027, est.: fourth-quarter 2026 earnings report. This falls outside the 30-day window, and the case turns on it. It shows whether revenue and margins stayed near third-quarter levels of $1.737 billion in revenue and $531.8 million in adjusted expenses.

What would change the view

The case breaks if monthly average daily volume falls under the 26.3 million contracts of October 2025, because that would erase the year-over-year growth behind the revenue gain. It also weakens if fourth-quarter revenue comes in below the third quarter's $1.737 billion while adjusted expenses rise above $531.8 million. Fourth-quarter revenue also depends on the average rate per contract, which was $0.679 in the third quarter and which the 3 November 2026 volume release does not report.

On price, a daily close below $264.48, the 25 September 2026 close that marked the late-September low, would end the thesis. That is the same invalidation level as in the previous note. A second regulatory setback, such as another CFTC stay or a further CME filing withdrawal, would weaken the part of the case that rests on new products.

What it trades with

Interest rate products were 14.8 million of October's 30 million contracts a day, and equity index products were 8.8 million (CME release, 3 November 2026). Revenue therefore leans on activity in Treasury and equity index markets, so a calmer rates market would hit the largest volume line regardless of product news.

Crypto is a small line at 145,000 contracts a day and $7.85 billion in notional value in October. Energy growth of 1% alongside Treasury growth of 48% shows the asset classes can diverge within a single month.

Notes

  • CME publishes average daily volume in the first business days of each month, so volume evidence arrives more often than quarterly earnings.
  • New contracts reach the market through CFTC self-certification or voluntary review; CME's announced launch dates carry 'pending regulatory review' language until trading starts.
  • Revenue is tied to trading volume in rates, energy, equity index and agriculture, so a quiet market lowers activity regardless of product news.
  • Press reports say CFO Lynne Fitzpatrick is to succeed Terry Duffy as CEO on 1 March 2027, with Duffy becoming executive chairman.
