How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 8 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A daily close below $2.40, which would extend the slide that began after the 8 October 2026 close of $2.90. A third-quarter report showing flat or lower time-charter revenue despite the announced higher rates would also break the case.
Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.
How picks are graded →The thesis
Diana Shipping's contract news is still strongly positive, but the shares no longer confirm it: the adjusted close was $2.59 on 21 October 2026, under the $2.80 level that the previous note set as the end of the recovery case. The third-quarter report decides whether the higher charter rates reach reported revenue.
On 8 October 2026 Diana announced a time charter for the Capesize ship G. P. Zafirakis with Classic Maritime at $38,000 per day gross, less a 5.00% commission. The expiring NYK contract paid $26,800 per day, according to Splash247. The company projects about $13.34 million of gross revenue over the minimum term, to 1 October 2027.
The narrative is maturing: the repricing story is well known after the July to October run of higher fixtures, and no new fixture has followed the 8 October 2026 announcement in company news. The shares closed at $2.90 on 8 October 2026 and at $2.59 on 21 October 2026, 16.7% below the $3.11 52-week high. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI) is 34.2.
Bullish and bearish views on Diana Shipping, Inc.
The bull case on Diana Shipping, Inc. (DSX), in brief: Zafirakis reprices sharply higher. The bear case: The shares fell through the recovery marker.
Bull case
- Zafirakis reprices sharply higher. The $38,000 per day charter compares with $26,800 on the expiring contract. Diana projects about $13.34 million of gross revenue over the minimum term (company press release, 8 October 2026).
- September contracts also repriced upward. DSI Polaris was fixed on 21 September 2026 at $18,000 per day gross against $12,250, with minimum employment to 1 May 2028. Astarte was fixed in mid-September at $17,000 against $12,500 (company announcements).
- Earlier fixtures point the same way. Philadelphia was fixed at $35,500 per day gross against $21,500, starting 8 August 2026 (Baird Maritime, 27 July 2026). Leto's extension on 24 August 2026 carries $18,000 against $12,750.
- Reported revenue has begun to rise. Second-quarter 2026 time-charter revenue was $57.3 million, up from $54.7 million a year earlier (Diana results, 30 July 2026). Most of the higher rates signed since then start after that quarter.
Bear case
- The shares fell through the recovery marker. The close of $2.59 on 21 October 2026 is below both the $2.80 level of 25 September 2026 and the $2.90 close of 8 October 2026, during a stretch with no new Diana fixture announced (adjusted daily closes).
- Momentum has not turned. The 14-day RSI of 34.2 sits near the level traders call oversold, and the shares have not closed above the $3.11 high.
- Gross revenue is not profit. Each contract is quoted gross of a commission, and the projected revenue figures are company estimates, not reported earnings. About five renewals in three months is too small a sample to support a fleet-wide margin claim.
- Corporate-control activity adds uncertainty. Diana has pursued Genco Shipping & Trading through offers and a board-nomination campaign. The outcome could change Diana's share count or capital use.
- The results date is unconfirmed. The company has not announced the third-quarter date, and Diana reported the same quarter on 20 November 2025 last year, so the revenue test may fall later than the early November the previous note assumed.
Price setup
The last completed adjusted daily close was $2.59 on 21 October 2026. The 52-week high is $3.11, and the shares are 16.7% below it. The three-month price gain has narrowed to 15.5%, from 36.7% in the previous note's 8 October 2026 reading.
The $2.80 close of 25 September 2026 is now overhead resistance rather than support. Weekly closes between 8 October 2026 and 21 October 2026 are not available in the price record, so the exact date the weekly test failed cannot be stated. A daily close below $2.40 would extend the decline; a recovery above $2.80 would restore the earlier frame.
Crowding evidence is thin. No filing or insider sale is reported in company news since 8 October 2026, and no heavy retail attention is visible. The one imminent item is the earnings date.
Catalysts, next 30 days
- ~19 November 2026, est. Third-quarter 2026 results. Diana reported third-quarter 2025 on 20 November 2025 and second-quarter 2026 on 30 July 2026, with date announcements about two weeks ahead.
Elapsed catalysts
- ~29 October 2026, unconfirmed. One calendar aggregator lists third-quarter results for this date. The company has not announced it. (passed 8d ago)
- Any new fixture announcement. The 10 October 2026 start of the Zafirakis charter has passed. Further vessel renewals would show whether the rate gains continue across the 40-vessel fleet. (passed 27d ago)
What would change the view
The case breaks if third-quarter time-charter revenue comes in flat or below the $57.3 million of the second quarter despite the announced fixtures, or if a new charter is signed at or below the rate it replaces. A daily close below $2.40 would also end it.
The case would recover if the shares close back above $2.80 and then above the $3.11 52-week high, or if the third-quarter report shows revenue and daily hire rising in line with the announced contracts.
What it trades with
Diana trades with the dry bulk shipping group, where charter rates for Capesize, Newcastlemax and Panamax ships drive earnings. Its price is likely to follow the Baltic dry bulk freight indices and peers such as Genco Shipping & Trading more than the broad market. Genco is also the counterparty in Diana's control contest, so news on that dispute can move both shares.
Notes
- Diana has pursued Genco Shipping & Trading through offers and a board-nomination campaign; outcomes could change its share count or capital use.
- Charter rates are quoted gross of a commission (5.00% on Zafirakis) paid to third parties; projected contract revenue is a company estimate, not reported earnings.
- The third-quarter results date has not been announced by the company; Diana reported third-quarter 2025 results on 20 November 2025.
