How to read this

The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 12 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.

Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.

Kill line

A daily close below $5.50, which would undo most of the three-month advance. A third-quarter gross margin below the 43–44% guidance or a cut to the $100–110 million adjusted EBITDA outlook would also break the case.

Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

The thesis

Funko's margin recovery and debt reduction are real, but the shares already trade near their 52-week high. Much of the raised 2026 profit outlook rests on a one-time tariff benefit. The third-quarter report, expected around 5 November 2026, shows whether margins hold once that benefit is gone. Until it does, the evidence gives the shares no clear edge over the S&P 500 over the next three months.

The company reported second-quarter results on 6 August 2026. Net sales rose 7% to $207.7 million, gross margin reached a record 56.6%, and net income was $15.4 million against a $40.5 million loss a year earlier. That gross margin includes a $25.4 million one-time tariff benefit. Funko raised its 2026 adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation, adjusted for one-offs) guidance to $100–110 million from $70–80 million. Sales guidance stayed at flat to up 3%, which the company tied to a cautious view of the consumer.

The narrative is maturing: the turnaround figures have been public since the 6 August 2026 report, and the latest burst of attention came from a rival's takeover story on 1 October 2026 rather than from Funko news. That day Funko and Jakks Pacific rose in sympathy after the Wall Street Journal reported that Authentic Brands Group had approached Mattel.

Bullish and bearish views on Funko, Inc.

The bull case on Funko, Inc. (FNKO), in brief: Core collectibles are still growing. The bear case: The profit raise leans on a one-off.

Bull case

  • Core collectibles are still growing. Core Collectibles sales rose 9% to $171.6 million in the second quarter, and Europe grew 19.4% to $69.0 million, according to the company's 6 August 2026 release.
  • Debt is coming down. Total debt fell to $201.1 million at 30 June 2026 from $225.3 million at 31 December 2025, according to the same release.
  • Underlying margin guidance moved up. Funko lifted its full-year gross margin guidance to 46–47% from 41–43% on 6 August 2026. Third-quarter gross margin is guided at 43–44%.
  • Toy-sector takeover interest is live. The Wall Street Journal reported on 1 October 2026 that Authentic Brands Group discussed an offer for Mattel above $20 a share. Reports on 7 October 2026 said toy maker Zuru was also weighing a bid. Interest of that kind tends to lift what investors will pay for other toy brands.

Bear case

  • The profit raise leans on a one-off. The $25.4 million tariff benefit booked in the second quarter covers much of the $30 million increase in the 2026 adjusted EBITDA range. The increase in underlying earnings power is smaller than the headline guidance suggests.
  • Sales growth is stalling. Funko guided third-quarter net sales at about flat year on year on 6 August 2026 and kept full-year sales at flat to up 3%. Loungefly, its bags and accessories line, fell 1.7% to $31.3 million in the second quarter.
  • Little room to the consensus target. The average analyst target was $7.25 as of 9 October 2026 (StockAnalysis), close to the $6.44 close the same day.
  • Leverage remains an overhang. Cash was $40.7 million against $201.1 million of debt at 30 June 2026. In a May 2026 note, Texas Capital described refinancing the debt as the route to removing the valuation overhang.

Price setup

The shares closed at $6.44 on 9 October 2026, 9.3% below the 52-week closing high of $7.10, on adjusted daily closes. They rose 16.0% over the three months to that date. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI), a momentum gauge where readings above 70 mean a fast run-up, stood at 74.4.

The crowding signs are the overbought momentum reading, the price sitting near the 52-week high, and a quarterly report about four weeks away. Part of the October gain came in sympathy with Mattel's takeover news on 1 October 2026. That part depends on the Mattel story, which has no confirmed deal or formal sale process.

Catalysts, next 30 days

  • ~5 November 2026, est. third-quarter 2026 report. Guidance calls for flat sales, 43–44% gross margin and $25–30 million of adjusted EBITDA. A result inside or above that range, with no tariff one-off, would show the margin gains are lasting. The call should also update debt reduction and holiday orders.

Elapsed catalysts

  • No fixed date — Mattel takeover developments. A formal Authentic Brands or Zuru bid for Mattel would likely support toy-sector valuations. If the talks collapse, the sympathy gain Funko took on 1 October 2026 could fade. (passed 12d ago)

What would change the view

The case for underlying margin progress breaks if the third-quarter gross margin comes in below the 43–44% guidance or if Funko cuts the $100–110 million adjusted EBITDA range. Third-quarter sales clearly below flat would also break it, since that would put the full-year sales range at risk. On price, a daily close below $5.50 would undo most of the three-month advance.

The read would turn more positive on three conditions. Third-quarter gross margin holds at or above 44% without one-time items. Debt falls further from $201.1 million. Funko announces a refinancing that removes the overhang Texas Capital flagged.

What it trades with

Funko moved with Mattel (MAT) and Jakks Pacific on the 1 October 2026 takeover report, so news on a Mattel deal is the largest outside driver right now. It sits in the consumer-discretionary group with Mattel, Fossil, PVH and Ollie's. Interest in that group has been cooling through September and early October, which leaves Funko's own results to carry the case. Consumer spending data and tariff policy affect the whole group, and Funko's cautious sales guidance shows its exposure to both.

Notes

  • Funko's results are highly seasonal: the fourth quarter carries holiday orders, so third-quarter guidance is an imperfect guide to the full year.
  • Funko uses an Up-C structure with Class A shares listed on Nasdaq and Class B shares held by pre-IPO owners, plus a tax receivable agreement.
