Operating-leverage re-rating on a de-rated HCM name is still working, but the fuel is two weeks stale: since the 2026-08-06/07 target raises the shares added 6.6% to $229.07 (2026-08-21) on no new company datapoint, RSI(14) 83.7, 1.1% under the 52-week high, and above the ~$226.90 aggregated target. Nothing dated tests growth before the Q3 print (~2026-11-04, est.).

Kill line

A weekly close below $210 (surrenders the post-Q2 advance and puts price back under the $210 median of the nine targets raised 2026-08-06/07); secondarily, a Q3 print (~2026-11-04, est.) that leaves the 8–9% FY26 recurring-revenue guide unchanged-to-lower or shows adjusted EBITDA margin at or below Q2's 44.2%.

Current Thesis

The leg being bought is operating leverage on a de-rated payroll/HCM franchise: a Q2 2026 double beat (2026-08-05), a raised full-year guide, and a share count being actively shrunk. That case has not changed since the 2026-08-08 note. What has changed is the price paid for it. The 2026-08-07 close was $214.94; the 2026-08-21 close was $229.07 — a further 6.6% advance across ten sessions in which the only dated company item was a 2026-08-12 sponsorship announcement (the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list). RSI(14) has gone from 81.0 to 83.7 rather than resetting, the shares sit 1.1% under the 52-week high of $231.71, and they are up 66.7% over three months. The re-rating headlines are stamped 2026-08-06 and 2026-08-07; nothing dated tests the growth assumption before the Q3 print, expected around 2026-11-04.

Bullish and bearish views on Paycom Software, Inc.

The model's bull view on Paycom Software, Inc. (PAYC), in brief: Q2 2026 beat both lines (2026-08-05): total revenue $531.2M, +9.8% YoY from $483.6M, against $513.101M consensus. The bear view: Price has crossed the aggregate. A target aggregation covering 11 analysts, retrieved 2026-08-22, showed an average twelve-month target of $226.90 (high $270, low $175) in a snapshot taken with the shares near $220. The 2026-08-21 close of $229.07 is above that average. Six of… Both cases follow in full.

Bull Case

  • Q2 2026 beat both lines (2026-08-05): total revenue $531.2M, +9.8% YoY from $483.6M, against $513.101M consensus. Recurring and other revenue $505.2M, +11.0% YoY, 95.1% of the total — the annuity base outgrew the reported top line.
  • Profitability ahead of the model: adjusted EBITDA $235.0M at a 44.2% margin; GAAP net income $107.4M ($2.34 per diluted share); non-GAAP diluted EPS $2.78 versus a $2.38 estimate.
  • The guide was lifted, not reaffirmed: FY26 revenue $2.197–2.212B against a prior $2.175–2.195B, so the new floor clears the old ceiling. FY26 adjusted EBITDA guided $1.007–1.022B, framed by the company as roughly a 46% margin at the midpoint versus the 44.2% just printed — the expansion is loaded into H2. Recurring revenue guided +8–9%.
  • A $0.375 quarterly dividend was declared 2026-08-03, record 2026-08-24, payable 2026-09-08.
  • The size of the sell-side revisions marks how far behind the model sat: on 2026-08-06/07 TD Cowen went $149 → $244 (Buy), Cantor $135 → $195 (Neutral), Barclays $154 → $210 (Equal-Weight), KeyBanc $195 → $270 (Overweight). Three of the nine raised targets remain above the 2026-08-21 close: KeyBanc $270, TD Cowen $244, BTIG $230.
  • No insider distribution or issuance surfaced into the move. The most recent CEO Form 4 located is a 25,000-share bona fide gift dated 2026-06-15 (12,500 direct, 12,500 via the Charis Michelle Richison Trust), leaving 2,774,921 shares held directly. No August Form 4 sales and no equity raise were found.

Bear Case

  • Price has crossed the aggregate. A target aggregation covering 11 analysts, retrieved 2026-08-22, showed an average twelve-month target of $226.90 (high $270, low $175) in a snapshot taken with the shares near $220. The 2026-08-21 close of $229.07 is above that average.
  • Six of the nine post-print targets sit below the last close — Citi $194, Cantor $195, Stifel $200, UBS $205, Barclays $210, Guggenheim $225.
  • The ratings did not move with the numbers. Citigroup (Neutral), Cantor (Neutral), Stifel (Hold) and Barclays (Equal-Weight) each reiterated while raising, which makes those revisions mark-to-market rather than a change of stance.
  • The guide embeds second-half deceleration. Q2 grew 9.8% total and 11.0% recurring; the FY26 framing is roughly 7–8% total and 8–9% recurring. The company's own arithmetic points to slower H2 growth than the quarter just delivered.
  • The last two weeks of advance rest on no new fundamental datapoint. The final analyst action was Citi's $194 on 2026-08-07; nothing since then has repriced revenue, margin or backlog.
  • Cash tightened while the buyback ran. Cash and equivalents were $198.0M at Q2 versus $370.0M at 2025 year-end, with $345.9M of stock retired in the quarter — repurchase at that pace is funded out of operating cash flow rather than from a large existing balance.
  • The next scheduled test is roughly ten weeks out. Consensus for Q3 sits near $2.30 EPS with the report expected 2026-11-04 (not company-confirmed).

Setup & Price Structure

  • Reference close 2026-08-21: $229.07, which is 1.1% below the 52-week high of $231.71. The three-month price change is +66.7%.
  • RSI(14) 83.7, against 81.0 at the 2026-08-07 close of $214.94. Ten additional sessions of gain did not work the condition off; it extended it.
  • The structural feature remains the 2026-08-06 gap, when the shares were indicated up 14.1% pre-market on the Q2 print. Beneath current price, the first shelf is the $214–220 zone (the 2026-08-07 close of $214.94; trade near $220.12 intraday on 2026-08-18). Below that, $210 is both the median of the nine targets raised 2026-08-06/07 and the level that would surrender the bulk of the post-print advance.
  • The narrative is maturing. The dating is explicit — the attention event was 2026-08-05 through 2026-08-07 (print plus nine target raises), and no analyst action or company release has followed; the most recent Paycom item of any kind is 2026-08-12. Price nevertheless made further ground into a 52-week high. Well known, still working, headline flow has stopped. It is not saturated while price is still setting highs, and it is not accelerating with the newsflow two weeks cold.
  • Crowding observables, stated as observables: the last close is above the aggregated average target; six of nine freshly raised targets are below spot; RSI(14) has held in the 80s across at least ten sessions; PAYC surfaced in Benzinga mover-screen listicles on 2026-08-05 and 2026-08-06 (filed under Industrials, despite Software/Technology classification elsewhere); there is no earnings date inside 30 days to force a repricing; no insider sales or issuance were located into the run.

Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)

  • 2026-09-08 — dividend payment date. Confirms the capital-return cadence continues alongside repurchases after cash moved to $198.0M from $370.0M at 2025 year-end.
  • No fundamental catalyst falls inside the window. The next one is outside it: Q3 2026 results, expected ~2026-11-04 (est., not company-confirmed; Paycom has historically reported Q3 in the first week of November), with consensus near $2.30 EPS.

Elapsed catalysts

  • 2026-08-24 — record date for the $0.375/share quarterly dividend declared 2026-08-03. Mechanical; it settles nothing about recurring revenue growth or the margin path. (passed 2d ago)

What Would Change Our Mind

The structure that has to hold is the post-print shelf. Losing the $214–220 zone and then confirming it — a weekly close below $210 — would put the shares back under the median of the nine targets raised 2026-08-06/07 and would mean the market had handed back the re-rating it granted on the Q2 numbers. That is the gradeable break.

Secondary conditions, in order of how much they would move the read:

  • A Q3 print (~2026-11-04, est.) that leaves the 8–9% FY26 recurring-revenue guide unchanged-to-lower, or shows adjusted EBITDA margin at or below the 44.2% posted in Q2 — the H2 margin expansion the guide implies would then not be arriving.
  • A downgrade or target cut from KeyBanc ($270), TD Cowen ($244) or BTIG ($230), the three houses whose targets still sit above the 2026-08-21 close.
  • Q3 repurchases materially below the $345.9M spent in Q2, or a credit facility drawn to fund them, which would remove the share-count support under EPS.
  • The dividend dates of 2026-08-24 and 2026-09-08 passing with no other dated event before November leaves roughly eight weeks in which price moves only on flow. Extension continuing through that gap without a fundamental datapoint would argue the label has moved from maturing toward saturated.

What would strengthen the case instead: a multi-week consolidation that holds above the $214–220 shelf while RSI(14) works back below 60, or a Q3 print that lifts rather than reaffirms the recurring-revenue range.

Correlation Notes

  • Moves with the payroll/HCM comparison set — ADP, PAYX, PCTY and WDAY — on shared inputs: employees-on-platform, per-employee-per-month pricing, and sell-side read-across from each other's prints.
  • Interest earned on funds held for clients is a rate-sensitive revenue line. Front-end cuts compress it independent of unit growth, which decouples reported revenue from bookings for every float-carrying processor.
  • Revenue is tied to client headcount, so a US mid-market employment slowdown shows up as a revenue headwind with no logo churn attached.
  • The name has travelled from a compressed multiple to a 66.7% three-month advance, so it now carries high-multiple software risk appetite as a second driver alongside its own numbers.
  • Appears in some vendors' Industrials mover screens while classified under Software/Technology elsewhere; peer comparisons drawn from those screens are not comparisons of like businesses.

Notes

  • Chad Richison holds roughly 20% of shares outstanding; founder voting concentration is a standing governance feature of this name.
  • Interest earned on funds held for clients is a rate-sensitive revenue line; front-end rate moves shift revenue independent of unit growth.
  • Q1 carries seasonal year-end tax-form filing revenue, so sequential quarter-over-quarter revenue comparisons are not clean.
  • The $0.375 quarterly dividend is declared by the board each quarter and is not a fixed commitment.
  • Classified under Software/Technology by most vendors but appears in some Industrials mover screens; screen-derived comps can mislead.
