Regime Risk-onMarket regime
Risk-on holds, consecutive print #23 in the journal, risk-on since 18 June 2026 and a continuation of the 07-21 read. The equity internals were mixed under it. VIX eased to 16.64, in the calm band and further below the ~18 gate than a session earlier, widening the cushion. Breadth thinned to 57.9% (565/976) above the 50-day EMA, down from the prior day but still in the healthy-but-marginal band. SPY closed 747.49, +7.2% over its 200-EMA of 697.07, a touch less stretched than the prior session. The rate side pulled the other way. The front end kept selling: the 2Y backed up 10bps week over week to 4.26% and the 10Y added 6bps to 4.63%, dragging the 10Y–2Y spread 4bps week over week tighter to 0.37% the bear-flattening flagged a day earlier extended rather than reversed. Breakeven firmed 4bps week over week to 2.26% and the real 10Y ticked 2bps to 2.37%. HY credit held flat on the session at 2.69% (−2bps week over week), keeping its confirm intact.

Regime assessment
The equity block was mixed against a day earlier: vol eased further below the gate, but breadth thinned and the index gave back a little of its extension. That is a calm-vol read with narrower participation, and it lets strength be pressed only where the tape supports it. The rate signal cuts against that. A 2Y up another 10bps week over week compresses the curve toward inversion, and a breakeven firming 4bps says the disinflation leg the front-loaded cut path leans on is not cooperating the tailwind under the highest-multiple, longest-duration names keeps thinning even as their prices hold extended. Credit stays the anchor; flat HY at 2.69% says no funding stress is building beneath the split. The working read: equity internals mixed, rate internals deteriorating. Positioning follows the divergence add discipline stays tight on duration-sensitive stories at +7.2% extension with breakevens rising, while catalyst-backed setups earn their size on the calm-vol equity read.
What would change the call
- VIX eased to 16.64 and sits in the calm band; a decisive push above the ~18 gate re-arms the vol constraint and tilts the read to caution.
- Breadth thinned to 57.9%; a slip under 50% flips the regime faster than any single macro print.
- The 2Y at 4.26% (+10bps week over week) extended the front-end selloff; if the 0.37% spread keeps compressing toward inversion, the cut narrative underwriting risk unwinds.
- Breakeven firmed to 2.26% (+4bps week over week); continued lift with the real 10Y at 2.37% pressures duration directly.
- HY at 2.69% is the credit anchor; a turn to widening strips the one clean confirm and drags the read toward neutral.
What to watch
- Next CPI against a 2.26% breakeven (+4bps week over week): a hot print with the real 10Y already at 2.37% pressures duration and the front-loaded rate path.
- Rates: whether the 2Y (4.26%, +10bps week over week) backup is a genuine repricing rather than noise is the fastest route to re-rating risk; watch the 0.37% spread for inversion.
- Labor: claims held firm at 208K (−8K week over week, as of 11 July 2026); the test is whether the 159.0M payroll trend and 4.2% unemployment hold into the next release.
- Fed path against a 3.63% funds rate, with the front end pricing less easing than a week ago the 2Y is the pressure point.
