Regime NeutralMarket regime
Neutral, the first neutral read in the journal, a flip from the risk-on read of 07-22. The vol side turned against the equity block: VIX rose into the elevated band at 18.70, leaving the calm zone it held the prior session and thinning the cushion that band had allowed. Breadth eased to 54.4% (531/976) above the 50-day EMA but kept its majority, mixed. SPY closed 738.06, +5.8% over its 200-EMA of 697.48, giving back part of the stretch. The rate side leaned the same way, harder. The whole curve repriced up: the 10Y added 12bps week over week to 4.67% and the 2Y 13bps to 4.31%, leaving the 10Y–2Y spread at 0.36% (−1bps week over week), a hair off flat. Breakeven firmed 4bps week over week to 2.28% and the real 10Y jumped 8bps to 2.39%, the sharper of the two. HY credit tightened to 2.68% (−5bps week over week), holding its confirm. Claims dropped hard to 187K (−22K week over week).

Regime assessment
The equity read softened: vol back in the elevated band, breadth still a majority but mixed, index giving back part of its stretch. That keeps strength sized only where the tape supports it, with a thin cushion underneath rather than the real one the calm band offered. The rate side adds to the pressure, and it is getting louder. A parallel shift higher with the real yield leading says the move is real-rate driven, not an inflation scare alone the flavor that bites longest-duration equity most directly, and it is building while breakeven refuses to cool. Credit is the tie-breaker and it votes with risk: HY tightening means no funding stress is forming beneath the repricing. Net: equity internals softer, rate internals at their worst, credit keeping the read from tipping into a warning. Positioning stays selective on catalyst-backed setups under the elevated vol read and disciplined on duration-sensitive stories while the real 10Y climbs.
What would change the call
- VIX rose to 18.70 into the elevated band, re-arming the vol constraint; a further climb tilts the read further toward caution.
- Breadth eased to 54.4% but held the majority; a slip under 50% flips the regime faster than any single macro print.
- The 2Y at 4.31% (+13bps week over week) led a whole-curve backup; if the 0.36% spread tips into inversion, the cut narrative underwriting risk unwinds.
- Real 10Y jumped to 2.39% (+8bps week over week) with breakeven firming to 2.28%; continued lift pressures the highest-multiple names directly.
- HY at 2.68% is the one clean confirm; a turn to widening strips it and drags the read toward risk-off.
What to watch
- Next CPI against a 2.28% breakeven (+4bps week over week): a hot print with the real 10Y already at 2.39% compounds the duration squeeze.
- Rates: the whole-curve repricing 10Y +12bps, 2Y +13bps week over week is the fastest route to re-rating risk; watch the 0.36% spread for inversion.
- Labor: claims dropped to 187K (−22K week over week, as of 18 July 2026), a firm read; the test is whether the 159.0M payroll trend and 4.2% unemployment hold into the next release.
- Fed path against a 3.63% funds rate: with the front end (2Y 4.31%) pricing less easing week over week, the 2Y stays the pressure point.
