Regime Risk-on

Market regime

Risk-on is the first risk-on print, a flip from neutral, the model's call one day earlier on 23 July 2026. The flip did not come from the vol side: VIX sits at 18.58, still elevated and barely eased from the prior session. SPY closed 738.90, +5.9% over its 200-EMA of 697.79, still stretched to the upside. The flip came from internals. Breadth firmed to 58.0% (566/976) above the 50-day EMA, a wider majority that now reads healthy but marginal rather than mixed. Rates did not join in. The curve backed up across the board: the 10Y added 16bps week over week to 4.71% and the 2Y 19bps to 4.37%, flattening the 10Y–2Y spread to 0.34% (−3bps week over week). Breakeven firmed 4bps to 2.28% and the real 10Y jumped 12bps to 2.43%, leading the repricing. HY credit also turned, widening 4bps week over week to 2.77%, so it is not confirming the flip. Claims stayed firm at 187K (−22K week over week).

Regime assessment

This flip is not a vol event. It is a breadth event. On its face the equity surface looks firmer, with breadth widening and the index above its average. Vol, however, stays elevated, and rates and credit deteriorated at once. A whole-curve backup led by the real yield is the version of higher rates that presses the highest-multiple names most directly. It arrives as breadth only just clears into healthy and credit stops confirming. With price and breadth carrying the read while the rate and credit confirms roll, the model extends trust to strength only narrowly. Positioning steps up from demanding catalyst-backed setups to pressing them selectively. Add size only where a name carries its own fresh catalyst, and ease off duration-sensitive stories while the real 10Y climbs. Treat the 58.0% breadth and the 2.77% HY spread as the two lines that decide whether this is a turn or a blip.

What would change the call

  • VIX at 18.58 is elevated. The flip came from breadth, not vol, so a further rise in vol would tilt the read back toward caution fast.
  • Breadth at 58.0% (566/976) is healthy but marginal. Holding above 55% with the curve settling keeps risk-on armed, while a slip back into mixed returns the read to neutral.
  • The real 10Y jumped to 2.43% (+12bps week over week), leading a whole-curve backup, and the 0.34% spread (−3bps week over week) is a few prints from inversion. That path is the quickest route back into caution.
  • HY credit widened to 2.77% (+4bps week over week) and is not confirming risk-on. A turn back to tightening argues the flip has support; continued widening argues it does not.
  • SPY holds +5.9% over its 200-EMA (738.90 vs 697.79). Price is still clearly bullish alongside breadth, and losing that stretch removes one of the two inputs propping the read.

What to watch

  • Rates: the curve backup (10Y +16bps, 2Y +19bps week over week) is the main pressure against the flip. Watch the 0.34% spread for inversion and the 2.43% real 10Y for whether the duration squeeze extends.
  • Next CPI against a 2.28% breakeven (+4bps week over week): a hot print with the real 10Y already at 2.43% compounds pressure on the longest-duration equity.
  • Credit: HY at 2.77% just turned to widening. The next few prints decide whether it is a blip or the start of funding stress forming beneath the repricing.
  • Labor: claims firm at 187K (−22K week over week, as of 18 July 2026). The test is whether the 159.0M payroll trend and 4.2% unemployment hold into the next release against a 3.63% funds rate.
