Regime Risk-off

Market regime

High-yield spreads widened 28bps week over week to 3.08% (FRED, as of 29 September 2026). Credit markets are demanding more compensation for default risk while the VIX still sits in its calm band, so the credit market and equity options are pricing different risk levels. The rate complex adds to that tightening. The 10Y rose 8bps on the week against 2bps for the 2Y, and the series split the 10Y move into 6bps through the real rate and 2bps through breakevens. That makes the steepening a real-yield move rather than an inflation-expectations move. Measured: 259 of 978 names above their own 50-day EMA is fewer than a third, and the series is flagged deteriorating, while SPY remains above its own 200-EMA. The index level rests on a narrow set of names. All FRED changes are week over week, and the data do not establish a same-day move in credit or rates.

Regime assessment

Financial conditions are tightening through two channels at once, rising real yields and wider credit spreads. Meanwhile, the equity index is being carried by a minority of its constituents. Low implied volatility means equity options have not yet repriced the credit move. One of the two markets is mispricing the other. The data cannot say which one.

The labour data do not corroborate stress. Claims fell by 1K to a low level, which weakens any reading of the spread widening as a response to deteriorating fundamentals. It leaves a rates-and-risk-appetite explanation as the more consistent one. That reading is an inference. Payroll and housing levels come without changes and cannot establish the direction of activity.

What would change the call

The defensive characterization would be invalidated by a joint reversal on a subsequent weekly print. Breadth would need to rise above 26.5%, HY spreads would need to narrow below 3.08%, and the real 10Y would need to fall below 2.91%, all while SPY holds above its 200-EMA.

A move in only one of those inputs would not be sufficient. For example, spreads narrowing while breadth keeps falling would leave the narrow-leadership reading intact.

What to watch

  • Weekly jobless claims: the next print tests whether the labour data keep contradicting the credit widening. Its release date is not yet scheduled.
  • Payrolls and housing starts: the next releases are needed to supply the month-over-month changes that the current data lack.
  • HY spread and real 10Y weekly deltas: a second week of widening alongside rising real yields would extend the tightening described above. A reversal would feed the invalidation test.
