De-rating unwind is now largely priced: $82.56 close on 2026-05-11 to $111.25 on 2026-08-14, RSI 72.2, with the 2026-08-11 Google Health/Lingo partnership and Wolfe's 2026-08-13 upgrade to $130 as the newest fuel. Nothing tests the 6.5%–7.5% FY comparable guide against Q2's 4.8% until the ~mid-October Q3 print; ESC Munich on 2026-08-28 is the only dated event inside 30 days.

ABT — Abbott Laboratories

Current Thesis

The frame set out at the end of July is intact and has advanced: a post-acquisition de-rating unwinding on hard prints rather than on hope. The 2026-05-11 close of $82.56 marked the low; the 2026-07-31 close was $105.70; the 2026-08-14 close was $111.25. On the adjusted series the 52-week high is $133.53, leaving the recovery 16.7% short of it.

What is new since the 2026-08-01 note is two items, neither of them financial. On 2026-08-11 Abbott and Google Health announced a multi-year partnership putting glucose data from Abbott's over-the-counter Lingo biowearable into the Google Health app, pairing it with Google's AI Health Coach (Google Health Premium, select devices) and running what the release calls one of the largest real-world metabolic health studies to date. No economics were disclosed and integrations are guided to "later this year." On 2026-08-13 Wolfe Research upgraded Abbott to Outperform with a $130 target — the first ratings upgrade since the ten target revisions that followed the Q2 print.

The unresolved question has not moved: FY26 comparable sales growth was reaffirmed at 6.5%–7.5% on 2026-07-16 while Q2 comparable growth printed 4.8%. Nothing inside 30 days speaks to that. The narrative leg an investor would be buying here is the second half delivering the acceleration the July move was priced on, with cardiac devices funding the ramp in acquired diagnostics — and that is a mid-October question.

Bullish and bearish views on Abbott Laboratories

The model's bull view on Abbott Laboratories (ABT), in brief: Q2 2026 (2026-07-16) — sales $12,593M, +13.0% reported and +4.8% comparable against roughly $12.48B consensus; adjusted diluted EPS $1.31 versus $1.28. The bear view: The guide still exceeds the print. 6.5%–7.5% FY comparable against 4.8% in Q2. Neither the FDA approval nor the Google deal produces revenue inside 2026 large enough to close that; the second half has to do it organically. Two segments are not contributing. Nutrition $2,144M… Both cases follow in full.

Bull Case

  • Q2 2026 (2026-07-16) — sales $12,593M, +13.0% reported and +4.8% comparable against roughly $12.48B consensus; adjusted diluted EPS $1.31 versus $1.28. FY26 adjusted EPS guidance raised to $5.45–$5.60 from $5.38–$5.58; Q3 2026 adjusted EPS guided $1.38–$1.46.
  • Google Health partnership (2026-08-11) — Lingo glucose trends surface inside the Google Health app alongside activity, sleep and heart rate, with the AI Health Coach generating recommendations off glucose data. The relevant base: CGM comparable growth was +9.5% in Q2 with FreeStyle Libre quarterly sales above $2B. Distribution through a consumer platform is the asset here; no revenue share was disclosed.
  • Wolfe Research upgrade (2026-08-13) — to Outperform, $130 target, against a 27-analyst mean target of $118.42 recorded 2026-07-31.
  • SimpleScreen CRC FDA approval (2026-07-27) — 81.1% sensitivity for colorectal cancer and 90.4% specificity for advanced colorectal neoplasia in PREEMPT CRC (n>48,000, 200+ sites).
  • Devices are carrying the number — Medical Devices $5,853M, +8.4% comparable in Q2; electrophysiology +13.4%; structural heart +5.7%. Volt pulsed-field ablation was FDA-approved 2025-12-22.
  • Insiders bought the drawdown — director John Stratton, 2,000 shares at $86.82 on 2026-05-07 (Form 4).
  • Dividend record — the 410th consecutive quarterly dividend, $0.63/share, was declared 2026-06-12, record 2026-07-15, payable 2026-08-17; the December 2025 action was the 54th consecutive annual increase.

Bear Case

  • The guide still exceeds the print. 6.5%–7.5% FY comparable against 4.8% in Q2. Neither the FDA approval nor the Google deal produces revenue inside 2026 large enough to close that; the second half has to do it organically.
  • Two segments are not contributing. Nutrition $2,144M, -3.6% comparable. Diagnostics $3,092M, +2.9% comparable, with China volume-based procurement in Core Lab.
  • Price is extended on its own history. RSI(14) was 66.77 on 2026-07-31 and 72.2 on 2026-08-14. Three-month return +32.6%.
  • The sell-side band is now underneath price in places. The 2026-08-14 close of $111.25 sits above the $112 targets set by Citigroup and Wells Fargo on 2026-07-17 in all but a dollar, and below the 2026-07-31 mean of $118.42. UBS cut its target to $125 on 2026-07-28 while maintaining Buy — a reduction into strength.
  • The newest catalyst is unpriceable. The Google partnership has no disclosed economics, no disclosed revenue share, and a "later this year" rollout. Nothing in the next 30 days converts it into a line item.
  • Litigation is open-ended. MDL 3026 (N.D. Illinois, Judge Pallmeyer) had 810 NEC preterm-formula cases pending as of July 2026; a Chicago jury awarded $53M compensatory on 2026-04-09 and $17M punitive on 2026-04-10; the Missouri appeals court declined on 2026-06-24 to refer the $495M 2024 verdict to the state supreme court. Verdicts arrive on no calendar.
  • Reported growth flatters. Exact Sciences (closed 2026-03-23) inflates the reported line through Q1 2027; Q2's 13.0% reported versus 4.8% comparable is the width of that gap.

Setup & Price Structure

Reference points, all dated: close $111.25 on 2026-08-14; 52-week high $133.53, so -16.7%; three-month return +32.6%; RSI(14) 72.2. The 200-day was overhead at the time of the last note; the 2026-08-14 close prints above that reading. The 2026-07-16 gap — the session Abbott added more than 10% on the Q2 beat — has not been revisited on a closing basis in the month since, which makes the gap zone in the $103–$105 area the first structural shelf beneath price.

The narrative is maturing. The attention spike is dated and behind: 2026-07-16/17 produced the beat, a 10%+ session and roughly ten target revisions in 24 hours (BTIG $134, RBC $130, JPM $120, Evercore $120, Piper Sandler $118, TD Cowen $115, Citigroup $112, Wells Fargo $112 among them). The subsequent headlines have been progressively smaller in market impact — FDA approval 2026-07-27, UBS trimming to $125 on 2026-07-28, Google on 2026-08-11, Wolfe on 2026-08-13 — while price advanced from $105.70 to $111.25 over the same fortnight. Coverage is mainstream, uniformly constructive, and the case is well understood; it is still working, and the flow behind it is thinner than in mid-July. This is not accelerating: no new class of buyer has been introduced, and the datapoint that would justify the next leg does not exist until mid-October.

Crowding and positioning observables, stated as observables rather than verdicts: RSI above the conventional 70 line on 2026-08-14; the close standing above the two lowest post-Q2 targets and below the 2026-07-31 27-analyst mean; a target cut into strength from UBS on 2026-07-28; the disclosed open-market insider purchases dated 2026-04-23 and 2026-05-07, i.e. into the drawdown rather than into this advance, with the only disclosed insider sale in the record being 613 shares at $115.58 on 2026-03-02; and no earnings date inside 30 days, which removes both the binary risk and the forcing event.

Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)

  • 2026-08-27 — ESC Congress press programme opens, Munich.
  • 2026-08-28 → 2026-08-31 — ESC Congress 2026, Messe München; ~30,000 attendees expected, congress theme artificial intelligence in cardiology. Late-breaking data sets the competitive frame for Volt pulsed-field ablation against Boston Scientific, Medtronic and J&J — the line behind Q2's 13.4% electrophysiology growth.
  • ~2026-09-11 (est.) — board declaration of the next quarterly dividend. Unconfirmed; the prior declaration was dated 2026-06-12 and Abbott's recent declarations have fallen in the second week of the quarter-opening month.

Beyond the window, two dated items anchor the thesis: the SimpleScreen CRC US commercial launch guided to "fall 2026" (~2026-10-01 est.) and Q3 2026 results against the $1.38–$1.46 adjusted-EPS guide (~2026-10-15 est.).

Elapsed catalysts

  • 2026-08-17 — $0.63/share quarterly dividend payable (declared 2026-06-12, record 2026-07-15). The 410th consecutive quarterly dividend; confirms the $2.52 annualized rate after a ~$21B cash acquisition. (passed 9d ago)

What Would Change Our Mind

The structure that breaks first is the 2026-07-16 gap. Price has held above it for a month; losing it would mean the market re-opened the question the Q2 beat was supposed to have closed. Concretely, a weekly close below $103 surrenders that shelf and puts price back beneath the 200-day zone that read $108.35 on 2026-07-31.

Three non-price conditions would do the same work on a slower clock. First, the FY26 comparable range of 6.5%–7.5% being trimmed at the ~mid-October Q3 report rather than reaffirmed, or Q3 comparable growth printing below roughly 6% — that removes the second-half acceleration the July re-rating was priced on. Second, ESC Congress closing on 2026-08-31 with competitor pulsed-field data that reframes electrophysiology share while Abbott presents nothing new, which would put the 13.4% EP growth rate under a visible ceiling. Third, the Google Health integrations slipping past year-end without a disclosed commercial structure, which would leave the 2026-08-11 announcement as an unmonetised headline.

What would strengthen the case, symmetrically: Q3 comparable growth at or above 6.5%, a payer-coverage decision on SimpleScreen with a published price, Nutrition returning to positive comparable growth, or Diagnostics exceeding the 2.9% comparable rate it printed in Q2.

Correlation Notes

  • Pulsed-field ablation peers — Boston Scientific, Medtronic and Johnson & Johnson compete directly with Volt. ESC late-breakers on 2026-08-28/31 are a shared read across all four names.
  • Procedure-volume risk — Intuitive Surgical fell 11% on 2026-07-17 after warning that insurance changes could slow US procedure growth, on the same day Abbott's beat was being marked up. That divergence is the live question of whether coverage-driven volume risk is sector-wide or name-specific; two or more large-cap medtech names citing it at Q3 would settle it.
  • Blood-based CRC screening — Exact Sciences is now inside Abbott (closed 2026-03-23), so Cologuard read-throughs are internal. Guardant Health remains the closest listed comparable for SimpleScreen pricing and payer-coverage datapoints.
  • CGM and consumer health — Dexcom for the glucose-sensor complex; the Google Health tie makes Alphabet's consumer-health release cadence a secondary input for the Lingo line.
  • Rate and defensive flows — a dividend grower at a $2.52 annualized rate trades with the healthcare defensive complex (XLV) and with the long-duration bid; the 2026-08-13 report of a congressman rotating blue-chip equities into municipal bonds is anecdote, not signal.

Notes

  • Reported growth includes Exact Sciences (closed 2026-03-23) through Q1 2027; Q2's 13.0% reported versus 4.8% comparable is the size of that gap.
  • Abbott's "comparable" sales measure strips FX and certain acquisition effects; the reported line and the guided line are not on the same footing.
  • NEC preterm-formula litigation (MDL 3026, N.D. Illinois, 810 cases pending as of July 2026) is unquantified in guidance and verdicts arrive on no fixed calendar.
  • Quarterly dividend $0.63/share, $2.52 annualized, 410th consecutive quarterly payment; December 2025 marked the 54th straight annual increase, so any rate decision reads as a post-deal capital-allocation signal.

Identity-security re-rating in its second, sell-side-led leg; the upgrade wave is still building nearly two months post-print — Wells Fargo lifted its target to $150 from $100 on 2026-07-20, collapsing the low-end dispersion.
