Resolved Graded and closed 2026-07-24 at medium conviction — the published kill line fired. Coverage continued after the close; the read below is dated 2026-08-16 and is not part of the scored record. Research has since re-rated the name low; the record keeps the graded tier.
Current thesis
The +80%-off-March recovery re-rate has matured and rolled over: Morgan Stanley pulled its Overweight ('valuation call') on 2026-06-25, and price faded ~30% from the $100 high back onto the reclaimed 200-day near $70 while targets stayed elevated. The ~2026-08-20 Q4 FY26 print — a 15-25% historical gapper — is the next binary and the only near-term re-accelerant.
Kill line
A weekly close below $69 loses the reclaimed 200-day and mid-June recovery base, turning the re-rate into a failed reclaim; a weekly close below $55 breaks the May gap shelf. Fundamentally, Q4 FY26 GMV guided below $12.75B, 30+ day delinquency above 3%, or a second top-merchant defection after Walmart breaks the thesis.

Current Thesis
The $70 shelf held. When this name was last written on 2026-07-26, price sat at $70.23 (2026-07-24 close) directly on the reclaimed 200-day after surrendering roughly a third of the March-to-June re-rate, and the open question was whether the reclaim would fail. It did not: the 2026-08-14 close was $78.35, RSI(14) 59.6, three-month return +19.0%, still 15.0% below the $92.18 52-week high. Two things changed the frame. A week later than the ~08-20 window previously assumed, so the binary is still ahead and the pre-print drift has more room to run or fade. Second, the character of the bid: the 2026-08-13 session closed +6.7% at $78.29 on a BMO Capital price-target raise to $86 (2026-08-12) and 13F disclosures showing increased stakes at Bank of America and RBC. No company datapoint accompanied that move. The narrative leg an investor is buying here is the same one as in May — a BNPL lender that turned GAAP-profitable while growing GMV 35% — but the incremental price is now being paid on sell-side and flow news, with the next actual information eight sessions away.
Bullish and bearish views on Affirm Holdings, Inc.
The model's bull view on Affirm Holdings, Inc. (AFRM), in brief: Q3 FY26 (reported 2026-05-07): GMV $11.6B, +35% YoY; revenue $1,039M, +33%; EPS $0.30; first-ever GAAP operating profit and roughly $100M of net income. The bear view: Price has now closed the gap to the bear-case anchor. Both cases follow in full.
Bull Case
- Q3 FY26 (reported 2026-05-07): GMV $11.6B, +35% YoY; revenue $1,039M, +33%; EPS $0.30; first-ever GAAP operating profit and roughly $100M of net income. That print retired the "structurally unprofitable lender" framing that capped the multiple for three years.
- Guidance issued 2026-05-07 sits above the Walmart-loss narrative: FY26 GMV $49.265–49.565B, implying Q4 GMV $12.75–13.05B, revenue $1,060–1,090M and an 8.5–10.5% operating margin. The 2026-08-27 release is the first check on whether that held.
- The Affirm Card is compounding faster than the base business: 4.4M active cardholders (+130% YoY) and $2.13B of card GMV (+146% YoY) as of Q3 FY26. Card volume carries different unit economics and reduces dependence on any single merchant integration.
- Morgan Payments channel, and an outdoor-retail add (Backcountry) surfacing in the August 2026 news cycle.
- Funding is not the constraint it was: CPP Investments renewed and expanded its forward-flow to $1.7B (up to $2.2B) on 2026-06-04, supporting roughly $8B of volume over 24 months, against total funding capacity of $28.2B as of 2026-03-31.
- Coverage keeps marking targets higher into the print: BMO Outperform PT $86 (2026-08-12), with third-party compilations showing an average target near $90.52 across a $75–$115 range as of mid-August 2026.
Bear Case
- Price has now closed the gap to the bear-case anchor. Morgan Stanley's 2026-06-25 downgrade to Equal-weight put fair value at $79 and called it "a valuation call, not a structural one"; the 2026-08-14 close of $78.35 sits fractionally under that number. From here, the marginal buyer is arguing against the valuation, and Morgan Stanley's own bar for more upside was "$4.50 to $5 of FY28 GAAP EPS."
- The 2026-08-13 advance was driven by a target raise and 13F filings — backward-looking snapshots of 6/30 positions — rather than an operating datapoint. A move built on that footing has nothing underneath it if the print disappoints.
- Realized volatility around this name is extreme: StockStory counted 44 single-day moves above 5% in the trailing twelve months (2026-08-13), and Affirm's earnings gaps have historically run 15–25%. A 15% gap down from the current area would break the July base outright.
- The Walmart/OnePay exclusivity that went to Klarna (roughly 5% of GMV) has not yet been absorbed into a full-year outlook. The FY27 guide issued on 2026-08-27 is the first time management has to frame growth without it.
- Credit reporting loses a tailwind. The 30+ day delinquency figure of ~2.5–3.0% at Q3 FY26 benefited from tax-refund seasonality in the denominator; the April–June quarter has no such support.
- Target dispersion of $75 to $115 around a $78 tape describes a sell-side that has not converged on a valuation, only on a rating.
Setup & Price Structure
The structure that matters is the $70–71 area — the reclaimed 200-day and the shelf that produced the 2026-07-24 close of $70.23. It held, and the July low is higher than the March low, which is what separates a maturing uptrend from a failed reclaim. Above it, the 2026-08-13 session gapped higher and closed at $78.29; the lower edge of that gap is the prior session's close, and that shelf — not the 200-day — is the first structure a fading pre-print drift would test. Overhead sits the $92.18 52-week high, 15.0% away, untouched since the June fade.
The narrative is maturing. Dating it: the top-pick sponsor exited on valuation on 2026-06-25; the base held through 2026-07-24 without a capitulation; and the 2026-08-13 advance came on analyst and filing news with no new fundamental input. That is a narrative still working, with the easy re-rate behind it and flow moderating rather than expanding. It is not accelerating — nothing new entered the story in August — and not yet saturated, since price has not reclaimed its high and RSI at 59.6 is unstretched.
Crowding and positioning observables, stated as observables: coverage is one-sided (roughly 24 buys and no sells at the late-July tally, average target near $90.52); a 6.7% single-session advance occurred on a price-target raise rather than company news; institutional stake increases at two large holders were disclosed in the 2026-08-14 13F cycle, describing positions as of 6/30; and a binary earnings release lands 2026-08-27, inside the window in which any fresh exposure is unhedged against a historically 15–25% gap. No recent insider transaction filings appear in the current window.
Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)
- 2026-08-27 (confirmed, announced 2026-08-06) — Q4 FY26 shareholder letter after the close; call 2:00pm PT with Levchin, Linford and O'Hare. Resolves the Q4 GMV $12.75–13.05B and revenue $1,060–1,090M guide, and the FY26 GMV range of $49.265–49.565B.
- 2026-08-27 (same release) — initial FY27 guidance. First full-year framing that must absorb the loss of Walmart BNPL exclusivity to Klarna via OnePay.
- 2026-08-27 (same release) — updated 30+ day delinquency and revenue-less-transaction-costs margin, the first credit read on an April–June quarter without tax-refund support.
- ~2026-09-15 (est.) — monthly credit-metric 8-K filings from large card issuers (SYF/COF/DFS pattern), the nearest external read on consumer delinquency trend after the print.
What Would Change Our Mind
The July base is the load-bearing element. If the 2026-08-27 print or the tape ahead of it sends price back through the $70–71 shelf that the 200-day and the 2026-07-24 close define, the reclaim becomes a failed one and the next reference is the May gap area near $55. Stated gradeably: a weekly close below $69 ends the recovery-leg read.
On fundamentals, the specific breaks are Q4 GMV printing below the $12.75B guide floor or FY26 GMV below $49.265B; a 30+ day delinquency figure above 3%; an FY27 GMV guide that the market reads as growth-decelerating ex-Walmart; or a second top-tier merchant announcing an exclusive with a competitor.
On narrative position, the condition that flips the label is a catalyst that comes and goes: if the print clears guidance and price cannot hold above the 2026-08-13 gap shelf within roughly two weeks of the release, the absence of a buy-the-news bid after a clean quarter is what moves this from maturing toward saturated.
Correlation Notes
- Beta to the consumer-credit complex is high and the read runs both ways: SYF, COF, DFS and UPST prints and monthly master-trust delinquency data are leading proxies for the BNPL credit narrative, and the sector tape remains headline-fragile ("47% of BNPL users pay late" circulated 2026-06-02).
- Funding-cost sensitivity is structural. Affirm's 0% APR merchant-subsidised loans are sold into forward-flow arrangements, so the front-end rate path and securitisation spreads feed directly into revenue-less-transaction-costs margin, independent of GMV.
- Competitive news flow is now idiosyncratic rather than sector beta: OnePay/Klarna, PayPal and Afterpay merchant announcements move AFRM without moving the fintech group.
- The name trades with high-beta e-commerce and discretionary spend; monthly retail sales and large e-commerce partner results are the demand-side correlate for the GMV line.
Notes
- Fiscal year ends June 30. Q4 FY26 covers Apr–Jun 2026 and publishes 2026-08-27 after the close, call 2:00pm PT (announced 2026-08-06).
- StockStory counted 44 single-day moves above 5% in the trailing 12 months (2026-08-13); historical earnings gaps have run 15–25%.
- Walmart's US BNPL exclusivity moved to Klarna via OnePay (~5% of GMV). Merchant-concentration headlines are a recurring company-specific risk.
- Coverage is one-sided: roughly 24 buys and no sells at the late-July tally, average target near $90.52 across a $75–$115 range as of mid-August 2026.
- Funding: CPP Investments forward-flow renewed and expanded to $1.7B (up to $2.2B) on 2026-06-04; total funding capacity $28.2B as of 2026-03-31.
- Reported delinquency is seasonally flattered in the Jan–Mar quarter by tax refunds; the Apr–Jun quarter has no equivalent support.
