Above its line on the last close.
How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 26 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A daily close below $9.50, which would put the shares back under the 50-day moving average reported on 23 October 2026 and erase most of the October rally; fiscal third-quarter revenue below the $217 million low end of guidance would also break the case.
Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.
How picks are graded →The thesis
Asana's shares have run ahead of its business. They climbed from an $8.62 close on 2 October 2026 to $12.02 on 23 October 2026 with no company-specific news, while management guides fiscal third-quarter revenue growth down to 8–9%. The fiscal third-quarter report, expected in early December, decides whether AI products lift revenue enough to carry that price.
The AI story is real but still small. In the fiscal second quarter (reported 3 September 2026), AI Studio and AI Teammates made up 25% of net new annual recurring revenue (ARR), up from 17% the quarter before. Total revenue grew 10% to $216.4 million. Net revenue retention, which measures how much existing customers spend a year later, was 97%. Below 100%, existing customers are shrinking on balance.
The narrative is accelerating in price and attention but not yet in reported numbers: BofA Securities raised its target to $12.75 from $10.75 on 23 October 2026 and the company announced a Cloudflare OS integration on 19 October 2026, yet Investing.com and StreetInsider both found no company catalyst behind the 20 October 2026 jump. The rating weighs that gap. The rally has outrun the analyst consensus, and the next growth figure the company has guided to is lower than the last one.
Bullish and bearish views on Asana, Inc.
The bull case on Asana, Inc. (ASAN), in brief: AI products are taking share of new revenue. The bear case: Growth is guided lower.
Bull case
- AI products are taking share of new revenue. AI Studio and AI Teammates accounted for 25% of net new ARR in the fiscal second quarter, against 17% in the fiscal first quarter, per the 3 September 2026 earnings call.
- Revenue beat and guidance rose. Second-quarter revenue of $216.4 million beat the top of guidance and the $214.15 million consensus (MarketBeat). On 3 September 2026 the company raised the low end of full-year revenue guidance to $858.5 million from $855.5 million.
- Profit margins are widening. The non-GAAP operating margin (excluding stock compensation and other items) reached 10% in the second quarter, up 300 basis points year over year. Full-year guidance calls for about 10%.
- Agentic product reaches every paid tier. The company said on 3 September 2026 that its Agentic Work Management bundle, which brings AI Teammates, AI Studio and Asana Dash to all paid plans, launches in the fiscal third quarter. The StackAI acquisition closed and added 50 basis points to second-quarter growth.
- Sell-side targets are moving up. BofA Securities lifted its target to $12.75 with a Buy rating on 23 October 2026. Citi kept a Buy rating with an $11 target on 7 October 2026.
Bear case
- Growth is guided lower. Fiscal third-quarter guidance of $217–219 million implies 8–9% growth, down from 10% in the second quarter. Part of the second-quarter growth came from the StackAI acquisition.
- Existing customers are not expanding. Net revenue retention was 97% overall and 98% for customers spending at least $100,000 a year in the second quarter. Neither figure is above 100%.
- AI is squeezing gross margin. Gross margin fell to 87% in the second quarter, down 120 basis points from the prior quarter, which the company put down to higher AI infrastructure costs and product mix.
- Price sits above the consensus target. MarketBeat's consensus on 23 October 2026 was Hold (4 Buy, 7 Hold, 3 Sell) with an average target of $9.95, below the $12.02 close. UBS reiterated Neutral with a $10 target on 16 October 2026.
- The chief executive sells steadily. SEC Form 4 filings summarised by MarketBeat show CEO Dan Rogers sold 300,937 shares at $9.53 on 21 September 2026, 150,175 at $9.13 on 22 September 2026, 18,021 at $10.04 on 9 October 2026 and 19,676 at $11.52 on 22 October 2026. The 22 October sale was made under a Rule 10b5-1 plan.
Price setup
The shares closed at $12.02 on 23 October 2026. That close is 20.4% below the 52-week high of $15.10 on adjusted daily closes and 46.8% above the level of three months earlier. MarketBeat put the 50-day moving average at $9.52 and the 200-day moving average at $7.98 on 23 October 2026. The last close sits about 26% above the 50-day average.
Most of the move came in three weeks. GuruFocus reported closes of $10.74 on 20 October 2026 and $11.07 on 21 October 2026, after an $8.62 close on 2 October 2026. The 14-day Relative Strength Index, a momentum gauge where readings above 70 mark stretched buying, stood at 81.9 on 23 October 2026.
The crowding signs are clear. The price is well above a rising 50-day average, momentum is at an extreme, the CEO has been selling into the rise, and the shares trade above the average analyst target. The next earnings date falls inside the three-month window.
Catalysts, next 30 days
- 31 October 2026: The fiscal third quarter ends. It is the first full quarter that includes the Agentic Work Management launch.
- No confirmed company event between 25 October 2026 and 24 November 2026. The company has not announced its report date.
- ~1 December 2026 to ~8 December 2026, est.: Fiscal third-quarter report. MarketBeat and The Motley Fool estimate 1 December 2026; Investing.com, cited by ad-hoc-news, lists 8 December 2026. This falls outside the 30-day window, but the case depends on it. Revenue against the $217–219 million guide, AI's share of net new ARR and net retention are the figures to watch.
What would change the view
A stronger fiscal third quarter would change the read. That means revenue above the $219 million top of guidance, AI products above 25% of net new ARR, net revenue retention moving back toward 100%, and a higher full-year revenue range than $858.5–863.5 million. Together, those would show that AI products are speeding up growth rather than just replacing seat revenue.
The bull case breaks if revenue lands below the $217 million low end of guidance, or if gross margin falls again from 87% without revenue speeding up to pay for it. On price, a daily close below $9.50 would take the shares back under the 50-day moving average reported on 23 October 2026 and erase most of the October rally.
What it trades with
The October move tracks the software group more than Asana's own news. On 20 October 2026, Yahoo Finance reported that Asana, Appian, Five9, Sprout Social and The Trade Desk all rose together as software stocks extended gains. Interest in AI enterprise software has cooled since mid-October after a brief revival, and peers such as Box, Blackbaud, Accenture and Gartner are exposed to the same debate over whether AI agents add to software seats or replace them. A reversal in software stocks as a group would likely hit this name hard, given its low revenue growth and stretched momentum. A company-specific beat in December is what would separate it from the group.
Notes
- Asana's fiscal year ends 31 January; fiscal 2027 runs from February 2026 to January 2027, so the fiscal third quarter ends 31 October 2026.
- CEO Dan Rogers sells shares regularly, including under a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan, so Form 4 sale filings recur.
- Co-founder Dustin Moskovitz stepped down as board chair effective 25 September 2026; CEO Dan Rogers succeeded him as chair.
