Kill line
A daily close below $135.15, the 2 September 2026 adjusted close and the low of the recovery range. A Metal Coatings adjusted EBITDA margin under 30% at the third-quarter report, or a cut to the $1.825–1.875 billion fiscal 2027 sales range, would also break the case.

How picks are graded →The thesis
AZZ Inc.'s galvanizing-led recovery gained support on 13 October 2026: second-quarter results beat estimates and fiscal 2027 guidance was raised a second time. The third-quarter report, expected around January, decides whether the higher ranges hold.
AZZ reported sales of $486.9 million, up 16.7%, and adjusted earnings of $2.00 per share. Benzinga lists the estimates at $463.5 million and $1.85. The company raised fiscal 2027 adjusted earnings guidance to $7.00–7.30 per share from $6.75–7.15, and sales guidance to $1.825–1.875 billion from $1.80–1.85 billion, with adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of $380–420 million.
The narrative is maturing: the results beat and the guidance rose on 13 October 2026, yet Simply Wall St reported on 15 October 2026 that the shares moved less than 1%. The adjusted close was $138.58 on 21 October 2026, 13.2% below the $159.61 52-week high.
Bullish and bearish views on AZZ Inc.
The bull case on AZZ Inc. (AZZ), in brief: Galvanizing growth accelerated. The bear case: Capacity is not full.
Bull case
- Galvanizing growth accelerated. Metal Coatings sales rose 22.9% to $233.5 million in the second quarter, against 12.3% growth in the first. The segment's adjusted EBITDA margin was 30.7%, up from 30.3%, which management attributed to operating leverage on record volume.
- Precoat Metals improved. Sales rose 11.5% to $253.4 million, against 1.5% in the first quarter. The adjusted EBITDA margin rose 100 basis points to 21.2% on higher throughput.
- Consolidated margin widened. Adjusted EBITDA was $110.9 million, or 22.8% of sales, against $88.7 million, or 21.3%, a year earlier, per the 13 October 2026 release.
- Guidance beat the street. The new $7.00–7.30 adjusted earnings range compares with a $7.07 estimate, and the sales range with a $1.813 billion estimate, per Benzinga on 13 October 2026.
- Analysts see room above the price. On 15 October 2026 B. Riley kept Buy and raised its target to $174, and Roth Capital kept Buy on 19 October 2026. Barclays and Wells Fargo raised targets to $145 on Equal-Weight ratings.
Bear case
- Capacity is not full. One analyst noted after the report that galvanizing fleet utilization is only 60% to 70%. Growth depends on filling new and upgraded plants, including the Tulsa ramp.
- Weak Precoat end markets. The CFO said heating, ventilation, air conditioning and appliance demand fell a combined 10% in the quarter, partly offsetting gains.
- Reported earnings fell. Simply Wall St reported on 15 October 2026 that net income excluding extra items fell about 34.6% to $58.5 million and basic earnings per share fell about 34.5% to $1.95. Adjusted earnings of $2.00 are the figure that beat.
- The market did not reward the beat. The shares moved less than 1% after the report, and the three-month price change was −7.4% on 21 October 2026. Baird, on 15 October 2026, lowered its target to $150 while keeping Neutral.
- Executives sold into strength. SEC Form 4 filings dated 11 August 2026 and 14 August 2026 show sales by Jeffrey Vellines at a $153.55 weighted-average price and by Bryan Stovall at $150.066.
Price setup
The adjusted close was $138.58 on 21 October 2026, up from $136.38 on 8 October 2026. The 14-day relative strength index (a 0–100 momentum gauge) was 55.3, and the 52-week high is $159.61.
The $135.15 close of 2 September 2026 is the low of the recovery range and sits 2.5 points under the latest close in dollar terms only loosely; it remains the invalidation line. The $148 area, where the shares failed to hold in August, is the nearest overhead resistance.
Crowding evidence is limited. The earnings date has passed, shares are not extended above a rising moving average, and SEC Form 4 filings show no insider sales after the report. The August executive sales are the only insider selling on record.
Catalysts, next 30 days
No company event is confirmed inside the next 30 days. The second-quarter report and call took place on 13 October 2026 and 14 October 2026.
The next event the case turns on is the fiscal 2027 third-quarter report, ~7 January 2027 (est.). It tests whether Metal Coatings holds a margin near 30% and whether the $7.00–7.30 adjusted earnings range survives a seasonally softer period. Any new SEC Form 4 insider filings are the only dated items likely before then.
What would change the view
The case breaks if a Metal Coatings adjusted EBITDA margin falls below 30%, if the company cuts the $1.825–1.875 billion fiscal 2027 sales range, or if Precoat volume declines again beyond the end-market weakness already disclosed. Officer open-market sales after the 13 October 2026 report would add to the bear case.
A daily close below $135.15, the 2 September 2026 adjusted close and the low of the recovery range, would show the market rejecting the raised outlook.
What it trades with
AZZ's Metal Coatings segment depends on infrastructure, utility and construction galvanizing demand and on zinc costs. Precoat Metals depends on steel supply and on construction, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and appliance volume. The shares therefore track cyclical industrial names, and a hotter-than-expected September inflation report on 14 October 2026 is the kind of macro input that moves such shares. AZZ no longer carries Electrical Products Group exposure after the 1 May 2025 sale to nVent.
Notes
- AZZ's fiscal year ends on 28 February; fiscal 2027 ends on 28 February 2027.
- AZZ's remaining interest in AVAIL does not restore direct exposure to the Electrical Products Group sold to nVent on 1 May 2025.
- Fourth-quarter results (December–February) are seasonally softer, and the company cites winter weather as a risk to galvanizing volume.
