Against its published line
Above its line on the last close.
How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 30 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A daily close below $255, which would hand back most of the fund's three-month advance and put it in line with the broader biotech pullback; a slowdown in acquisitions of listed biotech companies would also weaken the case.
Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

The First Trust NYSE Arca Biotechnology Index Fund is trading at its high for the year while the wider biotech group has stalled. That relative strength is real, but there is not enough fund-specific evidence for it to beat the S&P 500 over the next three months.
FBT is an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks an equal-weighted index of about 30 large and mid-sized biotechnology stocks. It closed at $278.55 on 30 October 2026, 0.6% below its 52-week high of $280.30, after a 12.7% rise over three months (adjusted daily closes). The fund trades as a sector story. Its price follows the biotech recovery narrative, driven by acquisitions and drug approvals, more than any single drug readout.
The narrative is maturing: CNBC's 24 October 2026 coverage of the sector rally shows the story is mainstream, and the small-cap-heavy SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI) has not regained its August peak.
Bullish and bearish views on First Trust NYSE Arca Biotechnology Index Fund
The bull case on First Trust NYSE Arca Biotechnology Index Fund (FBT), in brief: Acquisition activity supports sector valuations. The bear case: The sector rally has stalled since August.
Bull case
- Acquisition activity supports sector valuations. BTIG analyst Jeet Mukherjee put biopharma dealmaking at $134 billion in the first half of 2026, against $112 billion for all of 2025 (CNBC, 24 October 2026). Equal weighting gives each mid-sized holding a meaningful share of the fund, so a single takeover of one moves it.
- Large drugmakers face a patent cliff. The RTW Institute estimates that products with $180 billion of revenue lose exclusivity by 2030 (CNBC, 24 October 2026). That gives buyers a lasting reason to buy pipelines from companies like the ones in this fund.
- FBT is holding up better than small-cap biotech. FBT closed 0.6% below its 52-week high on 30 October 2026. XBI closed at $154.84 on 27 October 2026, after nearing $170 in August (BioPharma Dive, 9 October 2026). The larger, often profitable holdings in FBT have absorbed the October selling better.
- The sector has momentum over two years. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) gained 28% in 2025 and was up 24% year to date through 23 October 2026 (CNBC, 24 October 2026).
Bear case
- The sector rally has stalled since August. The S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index was down about 1.85% in October through 28 October 2026, while up about 27.2% for the year (Stocktwits, 28 October 2026). BioPharma Dive linked the slide to disappointing trial readouts, rising interest rates and worry about the midterms.
- Public-company takeovers are slowing. BioPharma Dive reported that deal activity has shifted toward private companies, which are being bought faster than listed ones. FBT holds only listed companies, so this part of the acquisition case is weaker than the headline deal totals suggest.
- The election creates drug-pricing risk. The 3 November 2026 midterm elections can change the outlook for drug-pricing legislation. Healthcare stocks often reprice on that kind of policy shift.
- There is little room left after the run. FBT's 14-day relative strength index (RSI), a momentum gauge running from 0 to 100, stood at 67.0 on 30 October 2026, close to the 70 level usually read as overbought. The fund sat 0.6% below its 52-week high that day.
Price setup
FBT closed at $278.55 on 30 October 2026. Its 52-week high is $280.30, and it rose 12.7% over three months (adjusted daily closes). The fund is pressing against its high at a time when XBI is below its August level. That puts the price near a test, with little room left between the close and the prior high.
A daily close below $255 would mean the fund has given back most of its three-month gain and joined the broader sector's pullback. The fund has no insider buying or selling and no share issuance of its own to track. Crowding shows up in the RSI reading and in how close the price sits to its high, not in filings.
Catalysts, next 30 days
- ~2 November to 13 November 2026, est.: third-quarter reports from the holdings. Revenue and guidance from the 30 holdings show whether the profitable mid-caps behind FBT's relative strength are still growing.
- January 2027: quarterly index rebalance. First Trust says the index is reconstituted and rebalanced each January, April, July and October. Weights reset to equal, so recent winners are cut back to their target weight.
Elapsed catalysts
- 3 November 2026: US midterm elections. The result sets the outlook for drug-pricing and healthcare policy. BioPharma Dive cited election worry as one cause of the sector's autumn slide. (passed 3d ago)
What would change the view
The case breaks if FBT starts falling with the rest of biotech instead of holding up better. A daily close below $255 would show that. A drop in acquisitions of listed biotech companies through the fourth quarter would weaken the main fundamental support. So would election results that bring drug-pricing legislation back onto the agenda.
The case for a higher rating would be stronger if FBT closed above its $280.30 52-week high while holdings' third-quarter reports confirm growth, and if XBI also recovers toward its August level. That would show broad sector participation, rather than a narrow run in a few names.
What it trades with
FBT moves with the other biotech ETFs, IBB and XBI. Because it holds about 30 stocks at equal weight, it sits between the two. It has less exposure than XBI to small, clinical-stage companies and more exposure than IBB to mid-caps. The biotech group is sensitive to interest rates, because early-stage drug developers are valued on cash flows years away. That makes FBT a rates-sensitive part of healthcare, separate from managed care and medical devices. Top holdings listed on the issuer's page on 14 July 2026 were Corcept Therapeutics (5.87%), NeoGenomics (5.03%) and Veracyte (4.95%). The October rebalance has since reset those weights.
Notes
- FBT is an exchange-traded fund holding about 30 biotechnology stocks at equal weight, so it reports no earnings of its own.
- The underlying index is reconstituted and rebalanced quarterly in January, April, July and October, which resets holding weights.
- First Trust lists the fund's total expense ratio at 0.55% a year.
