Kill line

A daily close below $12.50, a level that would extend the decline well past the March 2026 low of $16.25. A cut in the full-year silver-production floor below 15.1 million ounces at the third-quarter report would also break the case.

Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

The thesis

Hecla Mining Company's silver-margin recovery has not carried into the share price. The adjusted daily close was $14.11 on 22 October 2026, below the $16.25 March 2026 low that the previous note named as its break level. The third-quarter report, estimated for 4 November 2026, settles whether second-quarter margins persisted.

The shares closed at $17.07 on 9 October 2026 and are now 55.6% below the 52-week high of $31.79. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI) is 25.0, which marks heavily oversold trading. The shares are down 7.1% over three months.

The second-quarter release (4 August 2026) showed realized silver of $63.06 per ounce and silver all-in sustaining cost (AISC) of $6.07 per ounce after by-product credits. Full-year 2026 AISC guidance is $12.50–$13.50 per ounce. No third-quarter figure exists yet.

The narrative is maturing: the margin evidence dates to 4 August 2026, Jefferies initiated at Hold on 21 August 2026, RBC cut its target on 16 September 2026, and the shares have fallen in each period since.

Bullish and bearish views on Hecla Mining Company

The bull case on Hecla Mining Company (HL), in brief: Cash generation was strong in the second quarter. The bear case: The price broke the March low.

Bull case

  • Cash generation was strong in the second quarter. Hecla reported $136 million of free cash flow and $483 million of cash at 30 June 2026. It redeemed the remaining $263 million of 7.25% senior notes and carries no debt apart from finance leases (company release, 4 August 2026).
  • Production is rising at the best mine. Second-quarter silver output was 4.2 million ounces, up 8% from the first quarter, with a record 1.5 million ounces from Lucky Friday (company release, 4 August 2026).
  • It is borrowing capacity, not operating cash.
  • A pipeline of added output exists. Hecla targets first production from the Greens Creek pyrite concentrate circuit between the fourth quarter of 2027 and the first half of 2028, adding 1.0–1.2 million ounces of silver per year once ramped (company release, 4 August 2026).
  • Analyst targets sit far above the price. RBC kept Outperform with a $20 target on 16 September 2026, and Jefferies set a $22 target at Hold on 21 August 2026 (Benzinga). Both exceed the $14.11 close on 22 October 2026.

Bear case

  • The price broke the March low. The close fell from $18.19 on 25 September 2026 to $17.07 on 9 October 2026 and $14.11 on 22 October 2026. The $16.25 March 2026 low is now overhead.
  • Production guidance was trimmed once. On 4 August 2026 Hecla narrowed full-year silver production to 15.1–16.1 million ounces from 15.1–16.5 million. A lower floor at the third-quarter report would weaken the operating case.
  • The cooling project is unconfirmed. Hecla said on 4 August 2026 that Lucky Friday's surface cooling was 88% complete and targeted for September 2026. Company news through 22 October 2026 shows no completion announcement; the latest item (20 October 2026) concerns the NVRO Metals placement.
  • Interest-rate pressure on metals miners. Benzinga reported on 28 August 2026 that remarks by Kevin Warsh sank silver and gold miners, and on 14 October 2026 that hot inflation data hit rate-sensitive stocks.
  • Analyst sentiment has cooled. RBC cut its target to $20 from $24 on 16 September 2026. Jefferies initiated at Hold rather than Buy.
  • Growth is capped by permitting. Keno Hill's critical permits are not expected until mid-2029.

Price setup

The adjusted close on 22 October 2026 was $14.11, 55.6% below the 52-week high of $31.79. The RSI of 25.0 is deep in oversold territory. Sharp declines from such readings are often followed by rebounds, but the adjusted closes show no rebound so far.

The $16.25 March 2026 low is the nearest overhead reference and the earlier $17.07 close of 9 October 2026 sits above it. The 3 September 2026 reference close of $21.21 is the next marker above. No lower reference from the past year is available in the price series used here, so the invalidation level of $12.50 is a round figure beneath the current price.

Crowding evidence is thin. No SEC filings or insider transactions appear in recent filings. The report date is the main event risk, and the oversold reading suggests selling has already been heavy.

Catalysts, next 30 days

  • Date unconfirmed: Closing of the NVRO Metals private placement of up to C$35.0 million, in which Hecla is expected to invest under a non-binding term sheet (NVRO Metals announcement, October 2026).

Elapsed catalysts

  • ~23 October 2026, est.: Announcement of the third-quarter call date. Hecla announced last year's third-quarter schedule on 23 October 2025 and reported on 5 November 2025. (passed 14d ago)
  • ~4 November 2026, est.: Third-quarter 2026 results, date unconfirmed. The report tests silver realizations, costs, the production range and the Lucky Friday cooling milestone. (passed 2d ago)

What would change the view

The case breaks if the third-quarter report lowers the silver-production floor below 15.1 million ounces, raises the AISC ceiling above $13.50 per ounce, or shows Lucky Friday cooling slipping past September. A daily close below $12.50 would confirm the decline is extending.

The case improves if the report shows realized silver and costs near second-quarter levels and the shares recover above $16.25, the March low.

What it trades with

Hecla trades with the silver price and with precious-metals miners generally, and its swings have been larger than spot silver's. Benzinga linked the 28 August 2026 miner selloff to a hawkish rates signal, so inflation and interest-rate surprises move the shares independently of Hecla's own results. First Majestic Silver fell 5% on that day.

Notes

  • Keno Hill's critical permits are not expected until mid-2029, which caps growth from that asset.
  • Q2 2026 EPS differs by source: $0.18 per share on $118M income from continuing operations versus an adjusted $0.17 against a $0.21 consensus.
  • The NVRO Metals arrangement is a non-binding term sheet tied to NVRO's private placement, not a Hecla revenue contract.
