How to read this

The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 27 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.

Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.

Kill line

A daily close below $15.00, a round level under the 27 October 2026 close of $16.29. A fiscal 2027 guidance cut below 1.30 million ounces, or all-in sustaining costs above R1.395 million per kilogram, would also end the case.

Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

The thesis

Harmony Gold's case stays weak: spot gold has fallen to about $3,996 an ounce, below its September-end level, while the company carries a copper-heavy spending year. The shares closed at $16.29 on 27 October 2026, 35.1% below the 52-week high of $25.09. The 28 October 2026 US Federal Reserve decision is the next test, and the late-October annual report follows.

Gold has weakened since the previous note. Kitco reported spot gold near $3,995.81 on 23 October 2026, heading for a weekly loss above 3.5%, with Brent crude above $117 a barrel on renewed US–Iran tensions. Higher oil raises inflation expectations and the odds of further Fed tightening, which limits gold's safe-haven demand. In the 15 October 2026 note, gold closing below its September-end level near $4,155 was named as a confirmation of the gold risk. That condition has now been met.

The shares have held up better than the metal. The adjusted close of $16.29 on 27 October 2026 equals the close on 14 October 2026, and the 14-day relative strength index (RSI, a 0–100 momentum gauge) has moved from 30.5 to 51.9 over that span. The narrative is maturing: the copper-funding story has been well known since the 22 September 2026 bond pricing, and the record dividend was paid on 12 October 2026, so no scheduled shareholder-return event remains. The three-month price change is 3.1%.

Bullish and bearish views on Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited

The bull case on Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (HMY), in brief: Record fiscal 2026 earnings. The bear case: Persistent price pressure would strengthen the case for tightening.

Bull case

  • Record fiscal 2026 earnings. Harmony reported headline earnings per share of 4,363 South African cents, up 87%, and gold output of 1,429,551 ounces on 27 August 2026. Adjusted free cash flow reached R17.148 billion, up 54%.
  • Balance sheet entered the spending year strong. Miningmx reported on 22 September 2026 liquidity of R17.1 billion and net debt of R852 million at 30 June 2026.
  • Convertible terms limit near-term dilution. The 1.5% bonds due 2031 convert at an initial R418.60 ($25.7519) into about 19.4 million shares, roughly 3% of share capital, per the 22 September 2026 pricing announcement. That conversion price sits just above the 52-week high.
  • Shares resisted the gold decline. The close was unchanged between 14 October 2026 and 27 October 2026 while spot gold lost more than 3.5% in the week to 23 October 2026, per Kitco.
  • Softer inflation would help gold. Kitco noted on 23 October 2026 that a soft September PCE inflation reading, due 29 October 2026, could reduce expectations of a December rate hike and support gold.

Bear case

  • Persistent price pressure would strengthen the case for tightening.
  • Gold is far below its record. Spot gold near $3,996 compares with the $5,589.38 record of 28 January 2026, per Africa Gold Suppliers' September review.
  • Output falls while costs rise. Fiscal 2027 guidance is 1.30–1.40 million ounces at all-in sustaining costs of R1.30–1.395 million per kilogram, against R1,191,698 delivered in fiscal 2026, per the 27 August 2026 results.
  • Eva Copper spending is large. Eva is budgeted at $650–680 million this year and $1.55–1.75 billion to first production, per Miningmx on 22 September 2026.
  • Safety stoppages are unquantified. Harmony announced a fatal seismic incident at Mponeng on 14 September 2026 with work suspended in the affected area. Searches through 28 October 2026 found no lost-output figure.
  • Hedge losses cap realised prices. Fiscal 2026 included a R9.65 billion realised hedge loss, so realised prices lag spot during a gold advance.

Price setup

The adjusted close was $16.29 on 27 October 2026, against $17.52 on 1 October 2026 and the 52-week high of $25.09. The RSI of 51.9 is neutral. The shares are no longer oversold, and gold has made a new low for the period while the equity has not.

The $16.50 level named in earlier notes has been breached and is not a live reference. The $15.00 round level sits below the current close and is the invalidation level. For gold, Kitco lists support at $3,963, then $3,946 and $3,890, with resistance at $4,075.

Crowding evidence is limited to what is observable. Harmony sold $500 million of convertible bonds on 22 September 2026 into weakness rather than strength. Directors' dealings appear on JSE announcements rather than US Form 4 filings, and none surfaced in searches. The annual report due about 31 October 2026 is the nearest company event.

  • 29 October 2026: US September PCE inflation data. Kitco flags it as the next input to December rate-hike expectations. (passed 8d ago)

What would change the view

The case would break on a fiscal 2027 guidance cut below 1.30 million ounces, all-in sustaining costs above R1.395 million per kilogram, a quantified Mponeng production loss, or a new equity-linked financing for Eva Copper. A daily close below $15.00 would also end it.

The case would improve if gold recovers above Kitco's $4,075 resistance after a softer inflation reading, with the shares holding above $16.29 as they did through the latest gold decline. The 28 October 2026 Fed decision and the 29 October 2026 PCE print are the first dated tests of that.

What it trades with

Harmony's shares track the gold price and the rand-dollar exchange rate. Gold in turn follows US rate expectations and the dollar, and Kitco links the current drop to oil above $117 and the inflation it feeds. The copper projects add a second exposure through CSA and Eva, so the shares no longer move one-for-one with gold. Other South African and global gold producers share the same gold and rate drivers, with differences in hedging and cost structure.

Notes

  • Fiscal year ends 30 June. Results are reported in South African rand with US dollar conversions, so dollar figures move with the exchange rate as well as operations.
  • Foreign private issuer: files Forms 6-K and 20-F, not 10-Q or 10-K, and no US Forms 3/4/5. Directors' dealings appear on JSE SENS announcements.
  • The NYSE line is an ADR over a JSE-primary listing; South African hours lead the US session and dividends carry South African withholding tax.
  • Harmony runs a gold hedge book. Fiscal 2026 included a R9.65bn realised hedge loss, so realised prices lag spot gold during an advance.
  • Copper from the CSA mine (acquired 24 October 2025) and the Eva Copper project mean the shares no longer trade as a pure gold proxy.
  • The $500m 1.5% convertible due 2031 converts into about 19.4m shares (roughly 3%) at an initial R418.60 ($25.7519), with a net share settlement option.
