How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 23 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A daily close below $1.74, the 25 September 2026 close and the late-September low. Third-quarter adjusted corporate EBITDA under the $81 million second-quarter figure, or equity-dilutive restructuring terms, would also break the case.
Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

Hertz Global Holdings' shares have rebounded on a financing deal at its Oro Mobility unit, but the equity still trades on the outcome of its debt talks; the 5 November 2026 third-quarter report and any agreed maturity extension settle whether it can outperform. The shares closed at $2.18 on 22 October 2026, up from $1.84 on 19 October 2026 (Tickeron's reported prior close), and remain 72.1% below the 52-week high of $7.81.
On 20 October 2026 Hertz said Oro Mobility, its majority-owned fleet subsidiary, secured an $80 million equity investment from a group including Cohen Private Ventures and funds affiliated with Certares and Knighthead Capital Management. The shares rose about 12% to $2.06 in morning trading that day, per 247WallSt. The announcement concerns Oro's funding. It does not describe a change to Hertz's own maturities.
The creditor picture is unchanged from the 10 October 2026 note. Bloomberg reported on 30 September 2026 that Hertz hired PJT Partners to extend debt maturities, and on 7 October 2026 that lender groups had retained advisers. The narrative is still accelerating: the Oro deal on 20 October 2026 and Morgan Stanley's target cut on 15 October 2026 added news in the past eight days, and the shares are 20.7% above the 25 September 2026 close of $1.74.
Equity is a residual claim behind roughly $21.1 billion of total debt, per Benzinga on 25 September 2026. Most of that is vehicle-fleet financing secured by the fleet.
Bullish and bearish views on Hertz Global Holdings, Inc
The bull case on Hertz Global Holdings, Inc (HTZ), in brief: Oro financing adds outside capital. The bear case: Creditors are organizing against the company.
Bull case
- Oro financing adds outside capital. Hertz said on 20 October 2026 that Oro secured an $80 million equity investment, and 247WallSt reported Hertz keeps majority economic ownership and remains Oro's fleet and corporate services partner. Oro is expected to launch robotaxi operations later in 2026 with Lucid vehicles and Nuro technology, per EVWire.
- A related-party note repurchase retired debt at a discount. Hertz's 8-K shows an agreement dated 16 October 2026 to repurchase about $51.1 million of 8.000% exchangeable second-lien notes due 2029 for roughly $20.86 million, a 60% discount to par. The sellers were funds affiliated with Certares and/or Knighthead, and the independent audit committee approved it.
- Second-quarter operations improved. Hertz reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of $2.4 billion, up 10% year over year, and adjusted corporate EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of $81 million on 6 August 2026.
- The shares have gained 9.0% over three months through 22 October 2026.
Bear case
- Creditors are organizing against the company. Bloomberg reported on 7 October 2026 and 8 October 2026 that a secured lender group retained Evercore and Gibson Dunn, and a group including Canso Investment Counsel retained Houlihan Lokey. Competing groups raise the odds of a contested deal in which equity holders concede value.
- Bond prices signal distress. Early-October coverage of the creditor talks put Hertz's 5.0% notes due 2029 near 32.7 cents on the dollar. A price that low shows lenders expect losses on junior claims.
- The analyst target moved down again. Morgan Stanley lowered its target to $2.50 from $3.00 on 15 October 2026 and kept Equal Weight, after cutting it to $3.00 from $3.50 on 11 September 2026. The $2.18 close is 12.8% below that $2.50 target, which leaves little upside on that firm's view.
- Adjusted earnings remain negative. Hertz reported second-quarter GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) net income of $64 million but an adjusted net loss of $47 million on 6 August 2026.
Price setup
The adjusted close on 22 October 2026 was $2.18, with a 14-day relative strength index of 66.9. That reading is high for a stock still 72.1% under its 52-week high of $7.81. The shares gained from a $1.84 close on 19 October 2026 after the Oro announcement.
The nearest support is the 25 September 2026 close and late-September low of $1.74. The $2.00 area marked the August earnings reaction, per the prior note, and the shares now trade above it. Morgan Stanley's $2.50 target is the nearest analyst reference above the price.
Crowding evidence is visible. A roughly 12% single-session gain on 20 October 2026 followed a debt-driven slump, short interest was above 114 million shares at 31 August 2026, and earnings are 14 days away on 5 November 2026. Hertz was removed from the S&P SmallCap 600 effective 4 August 2026, which ended passive index ownership.
Catalysts, next 30 days
- 5 November 2026: Third-quarter 2026 results at 8:00 a.m. ET, with the call at 9:00 a.m. ET. The report shows whether adjusted corporate EBITDA held at or above the $81 million second-quarter level and whether management details the refinancing.
- Ongoing through November: Reports on lender talks and any maturity-extension proposal from PJT Partners. The dates are not announced.
- 1 December 2026 (later, but the case turns on it): A $200 million 4.63% bond matures. Repayment from existing liquidity would clear the nearest maturity.
What would change the view
The case breaks if third-quarter adjusted corporate EBITDA falls below the $81 million second-quarter figure, or if a restructuring proposal converts debt to equity or sets terms below the current equity value. Financing on equity-dilutive terms would also end it. A daily close below $1.74, the 25 September 2026 close, would confirm the market has moved to that view.
A signed extension of the 2028 loans without equity dilution, alongside adjusted EBITDA at or above $81 million, would strengthen the case. The Oro investment alone would not change the debt picture, because the announcement does not say that Hertz Global receives the proceeds.
What it trades with
Hertz trades with leveraged consumer and transport names that depend on credit conditions. Benzinga's 25 September 2026 survey put junk-bond yields above 15% and listed Hertz among exposed issuers. On 20 October 2026, 247WallSt reported Avis rose 0.9% while Hertz rose about 12%, which it attributed to the Oro deal and not to a sector move. Used-vehicle prices and rental pricing at Avis matter for fleet residual values and for read-across at the 5 November 2026 report.
Notes
- Hertz was removed from the S&P SmallCap 600 effective 4 August 2026, which ended that index's passive ownership requirement.
- Short-interest percentages differ by vendor;
- The equity is a residual claim behind securitized vehicle-fleet debt; the $21.1 billion total debt figure is not all unsecured corporate borrowing.
- The Oro Mobility investors Certares and Knighthead are affiliated with the sellers in Hertz's 16 October 2026 note repurchase; the audit committee approved it.
