How to read this

The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 30 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.

Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.

Kill line

A daily close below $29.00, back under the level where the shares traded after the August 2026 second-quarter report; or a full third-quarter specialty auto underlying combined ratio at or above the second quarter's 102.3%.

The thesis

Kemper's specialty auto turnaround improved in the preliminary third-quarter 2026 numbers, but the business still loses money on underwriting before reserve releases. The shares have already priced much of the news. The full report on 9 November 2026 shows whether underlying margins keep closing the gap.

Kemper's 8-K pre-release of 28 October 2026 put third-quarter net income at about $52.4 million, or $0.88 per diluted share. That compares with a $464.8 million loss, or $7.90 per share, in the second quarter, when Kemper took a $460.0 million goodwill write-down. Adjusted consolidated net operating income was about $59.9 million, or $1.01 per share, against $26.3 million, or $0.45, in the second quarter.

The headline specialty auto combined ratio fell to about 99.2% from 104.0%. The combined ratio is claims plus expenses as a share of premiums, so a figure below 100% means an underwriting profit. About $23 million of favorable prior-year reserve development drove most of that move. The underlying ratio, which strips out catastrophes and reserve changes, improved only to 101.7% from 102.3%.

The turnaround narrative is accelerating: the 28 October 2026 pre-release is fresh news, and the shares closed at $32.57 on 29 October 2026, up 12.5% over three months. The wider consumer-credit and insurance-shopping group is maturing, with its weekly read unchanged since late August. That cooling group gives the single-name case less help.

Bullish and bearish views on Kemper Corporation

The bull case on Kemper Corporation (KMPR), in brief: Profit is back after the write-down. The bear case: Reserve releases flatter the headline ratio.

Bull case

  • Profit is back after the write-down. Kemper's 28 October 2026 8-K shows about $52.4 million of third-quarter net income after a $464.8 million second-quarter loss. The goodwill charge was non-cash and did not touch statutory capital or holding-company liquidity, Insurance Business reported on 29 October 2026.
  • Operating earnings more than doubled sequentially. Adjusted net operating income rose to about $59.9 million from $26.3 million, per the 8-K. Net investment income edged up to about $107 million from $105 million.
  • California rate increases are still earning in. Kemper raised rates 6.9% on about two-thirds of its California personal auto book from 6 April 2026 and 3% on the rest from early June, the CFO said on the first-quarter call. Six-month policy terms mean most of that rate reaches earned premium only through early 2027.

Bear case

  • Reserve releases flatter the headline ratio. About $23 million of favorable prior-year development, 2.7 points of the ratio, produced most of the 4.8-point improvement. The underlying specialty auto ratio is still above 100% at 101.7%.
  • Underlying improvement is small. The underlying ratio moved only 0.6 points quarter on quarter, from 102.3% to 101.7%, per the 8-K. Chief Executive Stephen J. McAnena said Kemper has "more work to do".
  • Charges keep recurring. The third quarter still carried $6.4 million of after-tax restructuring and integration costs and $2.9 million of impairments. Kemper says it will keep evaluating efficiency programs through 2027.
  • Some analysts sit below the price. Piper Sandler cut its target to $28 from $35 after a 2026 quarterly report, TheFly reported via TipRanks. That is below the $32.57 close on 29 October 2026. Aggregator consensus figures disagree widely and several are stale.

Price setup

The shares closed at $32.57 on 29 October 2026, 25.1% below the 52-week high of $43.47, according to adjusted daily closes. They rose 12.5% over three months.

The 14-day relative strength index (RSI) stood at 78.4 on 29 October 2026. A reading above 70 marks a stretched short-term run. MarketBeat put the shares at $29.16 after the second-quarter report in early August 2026, which places the roughly $29 area as the last level before the turnaround rally.

Crowding signs are short-term. The RSI is high and the full results arrive within two weeks. The stock does not show heavy retail attention, and no share issuance into the rally has been reported.

Catalysts, next 30 days

  • 9 November 2026 — Full third-quarter 2026 results. The report adds the premium, policy-count and California figures that the pre-release left out, and shows whether the 101.7% underlying ratio holds.
  • 10 November 2026 — Earnings call at 8:00 a.m. Eastern. Management commentary on new business volumes, further rate filings and the restructuring programme sets the read on 2027 margins.

What would change the view

The case breaks if the specialty auto underlying combined ratio stops improving. A full-quarter figure at or above the second quarter's 102.3% would show that the third quarter rested on reserve releases. A second write-down or unfavorable reserve development would do the same.

The rating would rise if the 9 November 2026 report shows California rate increases reaching earned premium while policy counts hold. That would point to an underlying ratio below 100% in 2027. On price, a daily close below $29.00 would take the shares back under the level where they traded after the August report and erase the turnaround rally.

What it trades with

Kemper trades as a property and casualty insurer. Its shares follow the personal auto pricing cycle, claims inflation and reserve trends far more than credit conditions. Its tie to the fintech and consumer-credit group runs mainly through MediaAlpha and NerdWallet, whose insurance-shopping revenue depends on auto insurers' marketing budgets. A carrier with an underlying ratio above 100% has little room to raise customer-acquisition spend. Kemper's own results are idiosyncratic. Reserve releases and California rate approvals move the shares more than the group's direction does.

Notes

  • Kemper sold its Newins captive agent and storefront business to Confie in April 2026 and now distributes specialty auto only through independent agents and brokers.
  • Kemper is exiting its Preferred Insurance business, which it reports as non-core operations outside adjusted operating income.
  • Kemper writes mostly six-month personal auto policies, so rate increases take about a year to earn in across the book.
